A field experiment was conducted comprising two varieties of mungbean, BARI Mung-5 (V1) and BARI Mung-6 (V2), and five levels of phosphorus fertilizer: triple super phosphate [Ca(H2PO4)] viz. T1 (control), T2 (42.5 kg P ha−1), T3 (85 kg P ha−1), T4 (127.5 kg P ha−1), and T5 (170 kg P ha−1). The experiment was organized in a randomized complete block design with three replications. V1 produced the highest number of pods per plant (7.65), whereas the maximum 1,000-seed weight (49 g) was produced by V2. The maximum plant height (30.89 cm), number of branches per plant (8.55), number of leaves per plant (19.05), number of pods per plant (10.25), pod length (8.95 cm), number of seeds per pod (9.11), 1,000-seed weight (48.17 g), and yield (1.05 t ha−1) were obtained from the T4 treatment. The interaction of phosphorus levels and varieties had a considerable effect on the growth, yield, and yield attributes of mungbean. The highest number of leaves (20.44) and number of pods (10.39) were obtained from V1 when 127.5 kg P ha−1 (T4) was applied, whereas the maximum number of seeds per pod (9.25) and maximum pod length (9.09 cm) were obtained when  85 kg P ha−1 and 42.5 kg P ha−1, respectively, were used. The highest number of branches per plant (8.87), 1,000-seed weight (52.83 g), and the maximum seed yield (1.14 t ha−1) were achieved from the treatment V2T4 owing to the interactive effect of phosphorus dose and mungbean variety.

This research was carried out in the Experimental Field of Tekirda đ Agricultural Faculty. Two common vetch varieties and 5 lines were sown with 150 seeds/m 2 plant density according to a randomised block design. Some important yield related characters such as plant height, number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod width, pod length, 1000 seed weight, fodder and seed yield were examined. The results of variance analysis showed that the effects of genotype, year and their interaction on number of branches and number of pods per plant were all significant. In addition, the effect of year and variety on plant height and seed yield were found to be significant. Moreover, the number of seeds per pod, pod width and pod length were found to be significant in variety and year × variety interaction. There was only a difference between years for 1000 seed weight and fodder yield. According to the results, genotype 283 and Tokat had similar performance to that of commercial cultivars (Ürem, Kubilay). Especially the fodder and seed yield of genotype 283 were found to be higher than those of the cultivars (Ürem, Kubilay).

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is an important crop grown in tropical and subtropical climates with huge nutritional, economic and industrial benefits. The plant undergoes explosive shattering to disperse seeds after physiological maturity leading to high loss of seeds at the time of harvesting. A field experiment was carried out to determine the effect of different harvesting stages on the growth, yield and shattering dynamics of seeds of twelve Roselle accessions in the Department of Horticulture, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi from March to November, 2019. A 3x12 factorial design in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was used for the study, where factor one was harvesting stages at three levels (physiological maturity, one week after physiological maturity and two weeks after physiological maturity) and factor two was accessions at twelve levels. The study revealed that accession HS08 performed best in terms of growth (plant height, the number of leaves, number of branches and stem girth) and reproductive parameters (number of days to flowering) and accessions HS27 and HS08 produced the highest yield (number of pods, number of seeds per pod, and total seed yield). Harvesting of seeds at the physiological maturity stage happened to be the ideal time because seeds were harvested safely without any losses (0%) due to shattering as compared to the other harvesting stages. The study also established a very strong, positive and significant relationship between seed yield and number of leaves (r=0.7093) and the number of branches (r=0.9241). However, there was a strong but negative and significant relationship between seed yield and percentage seed shattering loss (r=-0.9633). There was a very strong, positive and significant relationship between number of leaves and stem girth (r=0.7769). The number of seeds per plant correlated positively with the number of pods (r=0.7358). A regression model which was given by the equation; Y (Seed yield)=670.96-0.3152 (Shattering loss), R2=0.9279, p<0.0000, indicated that shattering loss significantly affected seed yield to an extent that it contributed 93% of the variation in the seed yield.

The study was conducted at farmers’ field of Itbaria, Patuakhali sadarupazila under Patuakhali district during January to April 2016under the agro ecological zone AEZ-13 (Ganges Tidal Flood plain). This site was located in between 22°14' and 22°29' North latitudes and in between 90°12' and 90°28' East longitudes of Bangladesh. Fifteenmungbean varieties viz., BARI Mung-1, BARI Mung-2, BARI Mung-3, BARI Mung-4, BARI Mung-5, BARI Mung-6, BINA Moog-4, BINA Moog-5, BINA Moog- 6, BINA Moog-7, BINA Moog-8, BU Mug-1, BU Mug-2, BU Mug-4 and Patuakhali local Mung were tested to select best suitable variety for costal region. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with threereplications. Significant variation was observed among the different mungbeanvarities in respect of majority of the observed parameters.BU Mug-1 showed the tallest plant height while the tallest pod length was observed in BARI Mung-5. The highest number of branches per plant was found in BINA Moog-4 whereas the highest number of leaves per plant found for BARI Mung-6. The highest seed yield and yield attributes like number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and 1000 seed weight was recorded in BARI Mung-6 followed by BINA Moog-8 while Patuakhali local Mung produced the lowest yield and attributes. Most of the yield contributing factors of BARI Mung-6 wasfavorable for better yield in coastal region of Bangladesh. Hence the mungbean production can be increased by introducingBARI Mung-6 in costal region. SAARC J. Agri., 18(1): 161-172 (2020)

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University to observe the effect of sowing methods and weeding regimes on the yield of sesame. The experiment comprised of two factors. Two methods of sowing i.e., broadcasting and line sowing (S2), and six weeding regimes- control (T0), weed free (T1), one hand weeding at 15 DAS (T2), two hand weedings at 15 and 30 DAS (T3), three hand weedings at 15, 30 and 45 DAS (T4) and application of Panida (Pendimethalin) herbicide (T5) at 3 DAS. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Almost all the yield characters of sesame were affected significantly due to sowing methods, weeding regime and their interaction. Result showed that the l ine sowing showed better performance regarding plant height (100.40 cm), number of branches (4.983) plant–1, number of capsules plant–1 (47.82), number of seeds capsule–1 (69.66), 1000–seed weight (2.96 g), seed yield (956.90 kg ha–1), stover yield (2167.0 kg ha–1), biological yield (3123.00 kg ha–1) and harvest index (31.45%) than that of broadcasting method. Also weed free treatment had the highest plant height (101.90 cm), highest number of branches (5.00) plant-1, highest capsule (47.08) plant–1, heaviest 1000–seed weight (3.28 g), highest number of seeds capsule–1 (76.22), highest seed yield (974.30 kg ha–1), stover yield (2947.0 kg ha–1) and biological yield (3922.0 kg ha–1) as compared to other treatments while unweeded plot had least significant effect among the whole yield and yield attributes of sesame. In case of interactions, both weed free treatment and herbicidal effect with line sowing methods produced the highest plant height, number of branches and capsules plant–1, seeds capsule–1, seed yield, stover yield and biological yield (109.80 cm, 5.967, 56.57, 81.53, 1054.0 kg ha–1, 3139.0 kg ha–1 and 4193.0 kg ha–1, respectively) as compared to other interaction combinations. The results of the study reveal that the weed free treatment along with line sowing would be the proper technique for higher production of sesame. But line sowing along with application of Panida herbicide would be the best combination for obtaining higher yield of sesame since it is not feasible for the farmers to keep their field weed free throughout all the growing periods. An experiment was carried-out with forty-eight hybrids of pigeonpea and two checks for nine characters at Agricultural Research Station, Tandur (Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University). Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the hybrids for all the nine characters studied. The results of genetic parameters revealed that, high genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic coefficients of variations (PCV) were observed for seed yield and number of pods per plant. Six characters viz., number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod length, test weight and seed yield exhibited high heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean which suggested that these traits were amenable for further improvement following simple selection methods. Character association revealed significant positive association of seed yield with plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and pod length. Based on divergence studies, the hybrids were grouped into nine clusters in Tocher’s method, cluster II (14 hybrids) was the largest followed by cluster I (13), cluster VI (9), cluster IV (6), cluster IX (4) and the remaining clusters were solitary (III, V, VII and VIII). Out of the nine characters studied, seed yield, days to 50% flowering, test weight and plant height contributed 85.62 per cent of the total divergence and these traits were found to be important factors for genetic differentiation in the hybrids. The overall results of the study revealed that, hybrids under cluster IV and VIII and cluster VII and VIII had maximum and minimum inter cluster distances respectively and possessing high genetic diversity for the characters viz. plant height, number of branches per plant, number of seeds per pod and yield.

An investigation was carried out at the experimental field of the Department of Agronomy, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during September to November 2014 to evaluate the productivity of three mungbean genotypes, viz., GK-24 (G1), GK-63 (G2) and BU mug 4 (G3) under four plant spacing (densities) such as i) 15 cm x 10 cm= 66 plants m-2 (D1), ii) 20 cm x 10 cm= 50 plants m-2 (D2), iii) 25 cm x 10 cm= 40 plants m-2 (D3) and iv) 30 cm x 10 cm=33 plants m-2 (D4). The experiment was conducted in a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. A wide variation among the genotypes was observed in relation to light transmission, yield, and yield contributing characters. At 30 cm x 10 cm spacing (D4) the highest light transmission ratio (LTR) was observed in G1 genotype (57.92) and the lowest LTR value in G2 genotype (46.92). Among the three genotypes, G1 produced the highest seed yield (1094 kg ha-1). But highest seed number pod-1 was found in D2 (11.61) while maximum pods plant-1 (11.08) was in D4 treatment followed by D3 (10.59). Among the four plant densities, treatment D3 showed the highest 1000-seed weight (50.30 g). The highest seed yield (1114 kg ha-1) was recorded in the treatment D4. Among the interaction, the highest number of seeds pod-1 (12.20) was found in the treatment D1G3, though the highest number of pods plant-1(12.03) was in treatment D4G1 but the1000-seed weight was the highest (51.92 g) in D3G1. The highest seed yield (1230 kg ha-1) was recorded from treatment D4G1. The result showed that GK 24 genotype performed the best in all respects of yield and yield attributes at 30 cm x 10 cm spacing compared to other treatments.Bangladesh Agron. J. 2016, 19(1): 11-17

The experimental material comprised of forty eight genotypes consisting of five Mori based CMS lines and seven Mori based fertile lines crossed in line x tester mating design. The resultant thirty five hybrids along with their twelve parents and standard check (GDM 4) were evaluated in randomized block design at Castor-Mustard Research Station, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar during, rabi 2018-2019. The analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that variance due to gca was significant for all the characters except number of seeds per siliqua, seed yield per plant and 1000 seed weight. Whereas, variance due to sca was significant for all the traits. This indicates significant contribution of hybrids for specific combining ability variance component. The ratio of σ2gca/σ2sca below than unity for days to maturity, siliqua length, number of seeds per siliqua, seed yield per plant, 1000 seed weight and oil content which suggested greater role of non-additive gene action in the inheritance of these traits. Among the parents, female SKM 9928 and Kranti were good general combiner for seed yield per plant, total number of branches per plant and total number of siliquae per plant. Whereas, male parent Mori 'R' 1-18 was good general combiner for seed yield per plant, total number of branches per plant and total number of siliquae per plant. Best three hybrids which possessed significant positive SCA effects for seed yield per plant were SKM 301 x SKM 303, SKM 9928 x Pusa Agrani and Kranti x Mori ‘R’ 1-18.
