In 1994 Bradbury placed six stories, more than he had in a number of years, but his fiction continued to miss the major market magazines. Chapter 33 documents the film projects of the mid-1990s—a Fahrenheit 451 screenplay for Mel Gibson, and a script for The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit under consideration with Disney. A collaboration with NASA artist Robert McCall, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and special effects master Douglas Trumbull centered on an IMAX Corporation film theater project titled The City in the Stars, but Bradbury’s storyboard narrative was never produced. The chapter also describes Ray and Maggie Bradbury’s 1994 and 1995 summer sojourns in Paris with American expatriate journalists, and Bradbury’s increasing loss of hearing from mastoiditis.

The tasks and aims of the Bochum Observatory are popularization of astronomy and space sciences, and adult education. In general, as a cultural center for natural sciences we must translate scientific nomenclature into the language of the nonspecialist. Astronomy is ideal for presenting the basic facts of scientific methodology and reasoning to the publicA planetarium is the most versatile instrument for teaching basic astronomy and space sciences to the general public as well as to school groups. We take great care to avoid a lecture-like style in the programs. Audience surveys have shown that most visitors don’t want to get the feeling of being educated as in school. Nevertheless, we first have to motivate before we can educate. Instead, most visitors want merely to enjoy astronomy in the pleasant atmosphere of the dome. Consequently, our public planetarium shows contain elements of entertainment. We use many special effects, panoramas, and all-sky projections for a most precise simulation of astronomical phenomena. The audience should get the thrilling impression of witnessing things from close up. For example, they all become passengers on an imaginary spacecraft visiting the rugged terrain of Valles Marineris on Mars, the swirling clouds in Jupiter’s atmosphere, or even the vicinity of a whirlpool-like accretion disc around a supermassive black hole in the core of an active galaxy. We use the potential of the planetarium as an “illusion factory” to increase the visitors’ positive attitude towards astronomy and space travel. Special music, sound, and noise effects add to the impression.

The fruits of mamey, Calocarpum mammosum L., are often infested by the Anastrepha ludens L. fruit fly. The wasted fruits cause huge economic losses. The aim of this study was to investigate the nutritional value of mamey fruits when infested with larvae, and to propose their consumption. Mamey fruits were collected with and without the larvae in the city of Coatlán del Río, in Morelos, Mexico. A proximal nutrient analysis of the mamey pulp and A. ludens larvae were conducted. The organoleptic properties of ice cream from the mamey fruits with and without the larvae were tasted by a panel. The results obtained showed that the presence of larvae in the mamey fruits increases their nutritional value and the organoleptic study showed no difference between the clean and the infested products.

The summer of 1990 found Bradbury slowly revisiting his screenplay for a new Fahrenheit 451 adaptation, and the successful run of a new musical production of The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit created by the popular composer and singer Jose Feliciano. Chapter 28 continues with Bradbury’s collection of essays on various creative topics collected as Yestermorrow, where he explored the nature of metaphor and the value of child-like reverie to his creative process. The chapter describes Bradbury’s role as a judge in the controversial Turner Tomorrow Award in June 1991, where he took issue with the views of fellow judges William Styron and Peter Matthiessen and earned the gratitude of prize founder Ted Turner. A final visit with Federico Fellini in Rome concludes the chapter.

Bradbury’s popularity in Argentina culminated in a 1997 visit to Buenos Aires, where he met the president and such major South American literary figures as future Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa. Chapter 34 goes on to describe Bradbury’s long association with Argentine artist and photographer Aldo Sessa and the books they worked on, The Ghosts of Forever (1980) and Séances and Ghosts (2000). Bradbury was able to gather enough stories for two collections, Quicker Than the Eye (1996) and Driving Blind (1997), and the following year Stuart Gordon and Roy Disney were able to bring The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit to home video release. Chapter 34 also describes the eventual loss of the Mel Gibson Fahrenheit 451 option and the 2018 HBO production.
