The summer of 1990 found Bradbury slowly revisiting his screenplay for a new Fahrenheit 451 adaptation, and the successful run of a new musical production of The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit created by the popular composer and singer Jose Feliciano. Chapter 28 continues with Bradbury’s collection of essays on various creative topics collected as Yestermorrow, where he explored the nature of metaphor and the value of child-like reverie to his creative process. The chapter describes Bradbury’s role as a judge in the controversial Turner Tomorrow Award in June 1991, where he took issue with the views of fellow judges William Styron and Peter Matthiessen and earned the gratitude of prize founder Ted Turner. A final visit with Federico Fellini in Rome concludes the chapter.

In 1994 Bradbury placed six stories, more than he had in a number of years, but his fiction continued to miss the major market magazines. Chapter 33 documents the film projects of the mid-1990s—a Fahrenheit 451 screenplay for Mel Gibson, and a script for The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit under consideration with Disney. A collaboration with NASA artist Robert McCall, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and special effects master Douglas Trumbull centered on an IMAX Corporation film theater project titled The City in the Stars, but Bradbury’s storyboard narrative was never produced. The chapter also describes Ray and Maggie Bradbury’s 1994 and 1995 summer sojourns in Paris with American expatriate journalists, and Bradbury’s increasing loss of hearing from mastoiditis.

The Epilogue describes how economic and social shocks of the late 2000s, in particular the 2008 world economic crisis, affected local fusion musics in Central Europe. It discusses changes in artistic personhood, musical sociality, creative processes, and connections to the West European musical market; efficiency penetrated the creative process, and more aspects of the individual became monetized. The Epilogue describes how far-right nationalism and its musical expression strengthened in the late 2000s, and how others made musical interventions against these trends. It describes how musicians changed their relationships with large arts institutions, detailing how by the 2000s, intellectually oriented musicians established some connections to the Western European world-music industry and to new modes of musical production and distribution. It concludes that few artistic experiments could continue after socioeconomic shock.

Bradbury’s popularity in Argentina culminated in a 1997 visit to Buenos Aires, where he met the president and such major South American literary figures as future Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa. Chapter 34 goes on to describe Bradbury’s long association with Argentine artist and photographer Aldo Sessa and the books they worked on, The Ghosts of Forever (1980) and Séances and Ghosts (2000). Bradbury was able to gather enough stories for two collections, Quicker Than the Eye (1996) and Driving Blind (1997), and the following year Stuart Gordon and Roy Disney were able to bring The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit to home video release. Chapter 34 also describes the eventual loss of the Mel Gibson Fahrenheit 451 option and the 2018 HBO production.

Two experiments investigate effects related to food intake in humans. In Experiment 1, we measured startle response modulation while study participants ate ice cream, yoghurt, and chocolate. Statistical analysis revealed that ice cream intake resulted in the most robust startle inhibition compared to no food. Contrasting females and males, we found significant differences related to the conditions yoghurt and chocolate. In females, chocolate elicited the lowest response amplitude followed by yoghurt and ice cream. In males, chocolate produced the highest startle response amplitude even higher than eating nothing, whereas ice cream produced the lowest. Assuming that high response amplitudes reflect aversive motivation while low response amplitudes reflect appetitive motivational states, it is interpreted that eating ice cream is associated with the most appetitive state given the alternatives of chocolate and yoghurt across gender. However, in females alone eating chocolate, and in males alone eating ice cream, led to the most appetitive state. Experiment 2 was conducted to describe food intake-related brain activity by means of source localization analysis applied to electroencephalography data (EEG). Ice cream, yoghurt, a soft drink, and water were compared. Brain activity in rostral portions of the superior frontal gyrus was found in all conditions. No localization differences between conditions occurred. While EEG was found to be insensitive, startle response modulation seems to be a reliable method to objectively quantify motivational states related to the intake of different foods.
