Abstract A new analytical method for the differentiation of olive oil from other vegetable oils using reversed-phaseLC and applying chemometric techniques was developed. A 3 cm short column was used to obtain the chromatographic fingerprint of the methyl-transesterified fraction of each vegetable oil. The chromatographic analysis tookonly 4 min. The multivariate classification methods used were k-nearest neighbors, partial least-squares (PLS) discriminant analysis, one-class PLS, support vector machine classification, and soft independent modeling of class analogies. The discrimination of olive oil from other vegetable edible oils was evaluated by several classification quality metrics. Several strategies for the classification of the olive oil wereused: one input-class, two input-class, and pseudo two input-class.

The main aim of this study was introducing a comprehensive model of bank customers᾽ loyalty evaluation based on the assessment and comparison of different clustering methods᾽ performance. This study also pursues the following specific objectives: a) using different clustering methods and comparing them for customer classification, b) finding the effective variables in determining the customer loyalty, and c) using different collective classification methods to increase the modeling accuracy and comparing the results with the basic methods. Since loyal customers generate more profit, this study aims at introducing a two-step model for classification of customers and their loyalty. For this purpose, various methods of clustering such as K-medoids, X-means and K-means were used, the last of which outperformed the other two through comparing with Davis-Bouldin index. Customers were clustered by using K-means and members of these four clusters were analyzed and labeled. Then, a predictive model was run based on demographic variables of customers using various classification methods such as DT (Decision Tree), ANN (Artificial Neural Networks), NB (Naive Bayes), KNN (K-Nearest Neighbors) and SVM (Support Vector Machine), as well as their bagging and boosting to predict the class of loyal customers. The results showed that the bagging-ANN was the most accurate method in predicting loyal customers. This two-stage model can be used in banks and financial institutions with similar data to identify the type of future customers.

Classification of protein folds plays a very important role in the protein structure discovery process, especially when traditional sequence alignment methods fail to yield convincing structural homologies. In this chapter, we have developed a two-layer learning architecture, named TLLA, for multi-class protein folds classification. In the first layer, OET-KNN (Optimized Evidence-Theoretic K Nearest Neighbors) is used as the component classifier to find the most probable K-folds of the query protein. In the second layer, we use support vector machine (SVM) to build the multi-class classifier just on the K-folds, generated in the first layer, rather than on all the 27 folds. For multi-feature combination, ensemble strategy based on voting is selected to give the final classification result. The standard percentage accuracy of our method at ~63% is achieved on the independent testing dataset, where most of the proteins have <25% sequence identity with those in the training dataset. The experimental evaluation based on a widely used benchmark dataset has shown that our approach outperforms the competing methods, implying our approach might become a useful vehicle in the literature.

The subsurface target classification of ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a popular topic in the field of geophysics. Among the existing classification methods, geometrical features and polarimetric attributes of targets are primarily used. As polarimetric attributes contain more information of targets, polarimetric decomposition methods, such as H-Alpha decomposition, have been developed for target classification of GPR in recent years. However, the classification template used in H-Alpha classification is preset depending on the experience of synthetic aperture radar (SAR); therefore, it may not be suitable for GPR. Moreover, many existing classification methods require excessive human operation, particularly when outliers exist in the sample (the data set containing the features of targets); therefore, they are not efficient or intelligent. We herein propose a new machine learning method based on sample centers, i.e., particle center supported plane (PCSP). The sample center is defined as the point with the smallest sum of distances from all points in the same sample, which is considered as a better representation of the sample without significant effect of the outliers. In this proposed method, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is performed to obtain the sample centers; the new criterion for subsurface target classification is achieved. We applied this algorithm to full polarimetric GPR data measured in the laboratory and outdoors. The results indicate that, comparing with support vector machine (SVM) and classical H-Alpha classification, this new method is more efficient and the accuracy is relatively high.

Historical documents are important source for knowing culture, language, social activities, educational system, etc. The historical documents are in different languages and evolved over centuries and transformed to present modern language, classification of documents into various eras, recognition of words etc. In this paper, we have proposed a new approach to automatic identification of the age of the historical handwritten document images based on LBP (Local Binary Pattern) and LPQ (Local Phase Quantization) algorithm. The standard historical handwritten document images named as MPS (Medieval Paleographic Scale) dataset which is publicly available is used to experiment. LBP and LPQ descriptors are used to extract the features of the historical document images. Further, documents are classified based on the discriminating feature values using classifiers namely K-NN (K-Nearest Neighbors) and SVM (Support Vector Machine) classifier. The accuracy of historical handwritten document images by K-NN and SVM are 90.7% and 92.8% respectively.

The aim of the study is to compare electroencephalographic (EEG) signal feature extraction methods in the context of the effectiveness of the classification of brain activities. For classification, electroencephalographic signals were obtained using an EEG device from 17 subjects in three mental states (relaxation, excitation, and solving logical task). Blind source separation employing independent component analysis (ICA) was performed on obtained signals. Welch’s method, autoregressive modeling, and discrete wavelet transform were used for feature extraction. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed in order to reduce the dimensionality of feature vectors. k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Neural Networks (NN) were employed for classification. Precision, recall, F1 score, as well as a discussion based on statistical analysis, were shown. The paper also contains code utilized in preprocessing and the main part of experiments.

Remedial is one way to complete the minimum passing criteria. Students who take remedial every semester almost reach a relatively high number of the total number of students. To reduce the number of students who take remedial, a method that can reduce this is needed, with the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Decision Tree (DT) methods. SVM can eliminate barriers to data, predict, classify with small sampling and can improve accuracy and reduce errors. Data classification of students who do remedial/improvements by improving the kernel model for visualization including bars, histograms, and distributions as well as the Decision Tree has its own advantages. From the results of this study it has been obtained that the accuracy and precision of DT models is greater than that of SVM, but for recall DT is smaller than SVM.</em></p><p><em><strong><br /></strong></em></p>

The chromosome segmentation is the most important step in automatic karyotype assembling. In this work, we presented a brand new chromosome image dataset and proposed methods for segmenting the chromosomes. Chromosome images are usually low quality, especially fish chromosomes. In order to overcome this issue, we tested three filters to reduce noise and improve image quality. After filtering, we applied adaptive threshold segmentation combined with mathematical morphology and supervised classification methods. Support Vector Machine and k-nearest neighbors were applied to discriminate between chromosomes and image background. The proposed method was applied to segment chromosomes in a new dataset. To enable measure the performance of the methods all chromosomes were manually delineated. The results are evaluated considering the Hausdorff distance and normalized sum of distances between segmented and reference images.
