A REVIEW OF PRACTICAL METHODS FOR REDUCING UNDERWATER NOISE POLLUTION FROM LARGE COMMERCIAL VESSELS

Underwater noise pollution from shipping is of considerable concern for marine life, particularly due to the potential for raised ambient noise levels in the 10-300Hz frequency range to mask biological sounds. There is widespread agreement that reducing shipping noise is both necessary and feasible, and the International Maritime Organization is actively working on the issue. The main source of noise is associated with propeller cavitation, and measures to improve propeller design and wake flow may also reduce noise. It is likely that the noisiest 10% of ships generate the majority of the noise impact, and it may be possible to quieten these vessels through measures that also improve efficiency. However, an extensive data set of full scale noise measurements of ships under operating conditions is required to fully understand how different factors relate to noise output and how noise reduction can be achieved alongside energy saving measures.

This study uses a suite of performance measures that was developed by taking into consideration various aspects of congestion and reliability, to assess impacts of safety projects on congestion. Safety projects are necessary to help move Virginia’s roadways toward safer operation, but can contribute to congestion and unreliability during execution, and can affect operations after execution. However, safety projects are assessed primarily for safety improvements, not for congestion. This study identifies an appropriate suite of measures, and quantifies and compares the congestion and reliability impacts of safety projects on roadways for the periods before, during, and after project execution. The paper presents the performance measures, examines their sensitivity based on operating conditions, defines thresholds for congestion and reliability, and demonstrates the measures using a set of Virginia safety projects. The data set consists of 10 projects totalling 92 mi and more than 1M data points. The study found that, overall, safety projects tended to have a positive impact on congestion and reliability after completion, and the congestion variability measures were sensitive to the threshold of reliability. The study concludes with practical recommendations for primary measures that may be used to measure overall impacts of safety projects: percent vehicle miles traveled (VMT) reliable with a customized threshold for Virginia; percent VMT delayed; and time to travel 10 mi. However, caution should be used when applying the results directly to other situations, because of the limited number of projects used in the study.

ABSTRACTThe series resistance limits the linearity of photodiodes and decreases the efficiency of solar cells. It is usually determined from IV-measurements for moderate and high forward current density. This method, however, provides only partial information about Rs, since the series resistance depends on the operating point. An alternative method is based on noise measurements. System noise of the measuring system with a low-noise current-voltage converter has been investigated. A new method for extraction of photodiode series resistance from noise measurements is suggested. Noise measurements are carried out for a-Si:H pin diodes. The series resistance of an amorphous pin diode has been extracted for different operating conditions using the new measurement method.

Abstract   This study aimed to better understand appropriate interventions aimed at reducing hospital ward noise and the subsequent impact this would have on inpatient experience. Service users consistently reported that noise pollution was the most detrimental factor in their recovery in hospital, principally due to its effects on sleep. Methods To aid usability and data collection the Richards- Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) was adapted into an electronic format with a sliding Likert scale using QuestionPro Software3. Qualitative patient interviews, the RCSQ and ward decibel measurements were recorded on Henry and Anne wards at St. Thomas’ Hospital, London. 20 patients were interviewed (12F, 8 M), with 3 being ultimately discounted due to severe cognitive impairment. Results were collated and will be presented as part of a pre-feasibility evaluation of the tools to measure patient sleep and experience of ward noise. Results: The mean of the responses from the 17 patients interviewed were calculated and graphically displayed. Of interest, 87.5% found the questionnaire straightforward to understand, but only 18.75% found it easy to complete (due to technological unfamiliarity). Conclusion and discussion Patients reported a consistently reported a less than optimal night’s sleep on the ward, with light sleep and increased time to fall asleep being key factors. Although visits were restricted to the “quietest” times on the ward, noise measurements consistently exceeded WHO recommendations of 40 dB. Subsequently excessive night-time noise created by other patients as well as staff was cited as the principal causes of poor sleep, with ward lighting being another cause. Results from this study have provided the justification for sound-masking technology to be trialled on inpatient wards, with the view of decreasing unpleasant ward noise and improving patient rest and recovery.

A sample of healthy wind turbines from the same wind farm with identical sizes and designs was investigated to determine the average vibrational signatures of the drive train components during normal operation. The units were variable-speed machines with three blades. The rotor was supported by two bearings, and the drive train connected to an intermediate three-stage planetary/helical gearbox. The nominal 2 MW output power was regulated using blade pitch adjustment. Vibrations were measured in exactly the same positions using the same type of sensors over a six-month period covering the entire range of operating conditions. The data set was preliminary validated to remove outliers based on the theoretical power curves. The most relevant frequency peaks in the rotor, gearbox, and generator vibrations were detected and identified based on averaged power spectra. The amplitudes of the peaks induced by a common source of excitation were compared in different measurement positions. A wind speed dependency of broadband vibration amplitudes was also observed. Finally, a fault detection case is presented showing the change of vibration signature induced by a damage in the gearbox.

A benchmark of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-informed analytical methods, which are attractive for predicting fan broadband noise, was conducted within the framework of the European project TurboNoiseBB. This paper discusses the first part of the benchmark, which investigates the influence of the RANS inputs. Its companion paper focuses on the influence of the applied acoustic models on predicted fan broadband noise levels. While similar benchmarking activities were conducted in the past, this benchmark is unique due to its large and diverse data set involving members from more than ten institutions. In this work, the authors analyze RANS solutions performed at approach conditions for the ACAT1 fan. The RANS solutions were obtained using different CFD codes, mesh resolutions, and computational settings. The flow, turbulence, and resulting fan broadband noise predictions are analyzed to pinpoint critical influencing parameters related to the RANS inputs. Experimental data are used for comparison. It is shown that when turbomachinery experts perform RANS simulations using the same geometry and the same operating conditions, the most crucial choices in terms of predicted fan broadband noise are the type of turbulence model and applied turbulence model extensions. Chosen mesh resolutions, CFD solvers, and other computational settings are less critical.
