SummaryVarious factor IX concentrates have been examined in a number of in vitro tests of thrombogenicity. The results suggest that some tests are superfluous as in concentrates with activity in any of these tests activation is revealed by a combination of the non-activated partial thromboplastin time, the thrombin (or Xa) generation time and factor VIII inhibitor bypassing activity tests. Assay of individual coagulant enzymes revealed that most concentrates contained more factor IXa than Xa. However only a small number of concentrates, chiefly those that had been purposefully activated, contained appreciable amounts of either enzyme.

The serial interval is the time between symptom onsets in an infector–infectee pair. The generation time, also known as the generation interval, is the time between infection events in an infector–infectee pair. The serial interval and the generation time are key parameters for assessing the dynamics of a disease. A number of scientific papers reported information pertaining to the serial interval and/or generation time for COVID-19. Objective Conduct a review of available evidence to advise on appropriate parameter values for serial interval and generation time in national COVID-19 transmission models for Ireland and on methodological issues relating to those parameters. Methods We conducted a rapid review of the literature covering the period 1 January 2020 and 21 August 2020, following predefined eligibility criteria. Forty scientific papers met our inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Results The mean of the serial interval ranged from 3.03 to 7.6 days, based on 38 estimates, and the median from 1.0 to 6.0 days (based on 15 estimates). Only three estimates were provided for the mean of the generation time. These ranged from 3.95 to 5.20 days. One estimate of 5.0 days was provided for the median of the generation time. Discussion Estimates of the serial interval and the generation time are very dependent on the specific factors that apply at the time that the data are collected, including the level of social contact. Consequently, the estimates may not be entirely relevant to other environments. Therefore, local estimates should be obtained as soon as possible. Careful consideration should be given to the methodology that is used. Real-time estimations of the serial interval/generation time, allowing for variations over time, may provide more accurate estimates of reproduction numbers than using conventionally fixed serial interval/generation time distributions.

SummaryGeneration times and acid production after 6 and 24 h by 20 strains ofStreptococcus lactisof dairy origin were determined in heat treated (80 °C for 30 min) and sterilized cow's and ewe's milk. Ewe's milk enhanced growth of the streptococci, with significantly (P< 0·001) shorter generation times and higher acid production after 6 h incubation than cow's milk, probably due to its higher vitamin content. The stronger buffer capacity of ewe's milk allowed a higher (P< 0·001) acid production after 24 h than cow's milk. A stimulatory effect of sterilization on generation time and acid production after 24 h was observed in cow's milk. However, the heat treated ewe's milk was shown to be a better substrate than sterilized ewe's milk forStr. lactis.

When Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was grown on ferrous iron and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in excess of 96% of the bacterial population was associated with the insoluble material. When sulfur was the substrate 77% of the bacteria were so associated. This necessitated consideration of the complete growth system to obtain accurate growth curves. By using total bacterial nitrogen as the measure of growth, it was shown that T. ferrooxidans had a minimum generation time of 6.5 to 10 hours on a ferrous iron substrate, 7 to 8 days on a sulfur substrate, and 14 to 17 hours on a chalcopyrite substrate. The pH range for growth was dependent on the substrate used.
