The entire character recognition system is logically characterized into different sections like Scanning, Pre-processing, Classification, Processing, and Post-processing. In the targeted system, the scanned image is first passed through pre-processing modules then feature extraction, classification in order to achieve a high recognition rate. This paper describes mainly on Feature extraction and Classification technique. These are the methodologies which play an important role to identify offline handwritten characters specifically in Gujarati language. Feature extraction provides methods with the help of which characters can identify uniquely and with high degree of accuracy. Feature extraction helps to find the shape contained in the pattern. Several techniques are available for feature extraction and classification, however the selection of an appropriate technique based on its input decides the degree of accuracy of recognition.

Vertigo adalah salah satu keluhan yang sering dijumpai dalam praktek yang digambarkan sebagai rasa berputar, pening, tak stabil (giddiness, unsteadiness) atau pusing (dizziness). Penatalaksanaan pasien-pasien vertigo perifer sering kontroversi karena patofisiologi vertigo belum jelas. Beberapa obat ditemukan memiliki aktivitas antivertigo. Betahistin menyerupai histamin untuk terapi gangguan vaskuler dan vasomotor, dipakai untuk pengobatan vertigo, motionsickness, dan gangguan vestibuler sentral atau perifer. Mengetahui dampak penggunaan betahistin mesilate terhadap perbaikan gejala vertigo perifer di Rumah Sakit Bethesda Yogyakarta.Non eksperimental menggunakan rancangan case series dan menggunakan data prospektif. Untuk mengidentifikasi perbedaan dampak penggunaan betahistin pada penderita vertigo perifer, dengan perbaikan derajat keluhan vertigo digunakan skala Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI). Sebanyak 20 subyek penelitian yang masuk kriteria inklusi dianalisis menggunakan uji repeated ANOVA. Data diperoleh dari 20 pasien dengan vertigo perifer didapatkan rerata total skor DHI pada baseline (awal) adalah 42,95±21,44, 35,20±19,56 pada kunjungan 2, dan 28,40±18,76 pada kunjungan 3 didapatkan signifikansi (p) sebesar 0,000. Rerata skor item DHI pada baseline (awal), kunjungan 2, dan kunjungan 3 pada item fisik (14,30±9,02 versus 13,00±8,14 versus 10,20±6,55), item fungsional (17,55±8,77 versus 13,40±7,43 versus 11,20±7,00), dan item emosional (11,10±8,06 versus 8,80±7,82 versus 7,10±7,77) didapatkan p<0,001. Objectives: Subjective symptoms of dizziness in older adults are affected not only by objective data such as postural balance, but also by complex psychological factors. Published data analyzing how simultaneous evaluations of both objective and subjective assessments of balance can predict fall risk remain lacking. This study examined how fall risk can be predicted based on both objective data for balance and hearing and subjective symptoms of dizziness among older adults visiting otolaryngology clinics. Methods: Medical charts of 76 patients ≥65 years old with dizziness/vertigo who visited the otolaryngology clinic were reviewed. Objective data were evaluated by postural balance (posturographic data with eyes open and closed, and one-leg standing test), spontaneous nystagmus, and mean hearing levels. Subjective handicap associated with dizziness/vertigo was assessed using the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI). Subjective mental status of anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Information on history (cardiovascular diseases) and fall accidents within the preceding year was collected using an in-house interview sheet. Results: Objective data on postural balance did not correlate with subjective symptoms on DHI or HADS ( P > .05, Pearson’s correlation coefficient). Adjusted logistic regression modeling with the outcome of incident falls revealed that poor postural balance significantly predicted fall risk ( P < .05; 4.9 [1.4-16.8] per 10-cm2 increment). Nystagmus tended to be associated with fall risk. In contrast, DHI score did not predict fall risk ( P = .43; 1.0 [0.9-1.03]). Receiver operating characteristic analysis proposed a cut-off for postural sway with eyes closed >6.1 cm2 as optimal to predict falls in patients with nystagmus (AUC, 0.74; 95% confidence interval, 0.48-0.997). Conclusion: Poor postural balance is associated with increased fall risk after adjusting for subjective symptoms in older adults at otolaryngology clinics. Conversely, the self-perceived dizziness handicap of DHI score is an insufficient tool to evaluate their fall risk.

AbstractBackground:Ototoxicity caused by medication can lead to debilitating symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo and postural instability. There is no current ‘gold standard’ treatment available.Case report:A 79-year-old male, with bilateral loss of vestibular function caused by gentamicin toxicity after surgery for prosthetic valve endocarditis, complained of dizziness, difficulty in walking and an increased risk of falling. Physical examination showed a positive head thrust test suggesting bilateral loss of vestibular function.Results:The patient underwent a specific motion-based virtual reality enhanced protocol for peripheral vestibular disease. He showed a great improvement, with a 50 per cent reduction in his Dizziness Handicap Inventory score.Conclusion:Computer-aided rehabilitation programmes might represent an important advance in gait and posture training.

The purpose of this paper is to determine if the level of handicap reported by individuals on the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), an inventory developed for use with individuals with complaints of dizziness symptoms, will be consistent with that reported on the Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC), a tool developed for use with elderly individuals that attempts to assess a person’s confidence level in performing activities of daily living (ADL’s). A sample of convenience was used consisting of 71 subjects (15 males and 56 females) from a local Balance and Vestibular Clinic. The subjects ranged in age from 26 to 88 years of age. Both the DHI and the ABC were administered as part of an initial physical therapy evaluation to new patients at the clinic. A moderately strong negative correlation was found between the scores of the two inventories ( r s = − 0.6350). The results suggest that the ABC is a valid tool for use with individuals with complaints of dizziness.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a confiabilidade dos resultados numa versão adaptada do Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) brasileiro para crianças. Métodos: (1) adaptação semântica do DHI, primeira versão, para população infantil; (2) apreciação do DHI por juízes fonoaudiólogos, para adequação semântica da versão adaptada; (3) aplicação do piloto em 15 indivíduos para ajustes semânticos; (4) aplicação da versão adaptada do DHI, em 119 crianças com relato de tontura; (5) teste-reteste de 34 crianças. Resultados: Com relação ao gênero, verificou-se médias mais elevadas do escore total nas crianças do gênero feminino. Não houve associação entre os escores do Dizziness Handicap Inventory-Child/Adolescent (DHI-CA) e a idade das crianças. Foram constatados índices adequados de consistência interna e estabilidade dos resultados na escala total e nas três subescalas. Conclusão: O Dizziness Handicap Inventory-Child/Adolescent mostrou-se confiável para quantificação do impacto da tontura na qualidade de vida das crianças e adolescentes em fase escolar, sendo a confiabilidade dos resultados uma primeira contribuição para a validação desse instrumento.

OBJETIVO: Caracterizar a interferência da tontura na qualidade de vida de adultos com migrânea qualificando seus efeitos impostos no cotidiano destes indivíduos nos aspectos físico, emocional e funcional, por meio do questionário DHI (Dizziness Handicap Inventory) Versão Brasileira. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 25 pacientes adultos com diagnóstico de migrânea, de ambos os gêneros, com idades variando entre 20 e 80 anos. Os pacientes que apresentaram queixa de tontura responderam ao questionário DHI Versão Brasileira, que avalia a interferência da tontura na qualidade de vida dos pacientes, abordando os aspectos emocional, físico e funcional. RESULTADOS: Dos 25 pacientes com migrânea entrevistados, 80% apresentaram queixa de tontura, dos quais 90% eram do gênero feminino. Os aspectos funcionais e físicos tiveram frequências de respostas semelhantes, comparadas entre si, diferenciando-se do emocional, que gerou mais inconsistências de respostas, além de ter apresentado um menor índice das mesmas, sendo este o aspecto que menos afeta a vida desses pacientes. CONCLUSÃO: O aspecto funcional foi o mais prejudicado na qualidade de vida dos pacientes pesquisados, seguido do aspectos físico e emocional, respectivamente. O DHI mostrou-se um instrumento fundamental como complemento na avaliação e no acompanhamento da evolução clínica desses indivíduos.
