In Reply.— Because the incidence of each of these serious pediatric diseases is low, but the need for prompt recognition and skillful management is essential to optimal outcome, Drs Takahashi and Mason's excellent review and knowledgeable guidance are invaluable to the practicing pediatrician who rarely manages either of these disorders. Our concern that aspirin may interfere with platelet adhesion (when not therapeutically desirable), may increase airway resistance, and may be associated with Reye syndrome should not lead us to discontinue recommending appropriate use of this excellent drug when therapeutic benefit outweighs risk.

In this short, well written and illustrated book the author gives an excellent review of the literature related to the etiology and pathology of the congenital form of clubfoot. In the first part of the book he clearly describes the physical findings one would see in clubfeet of varying degrees of severity. The remainder of the book is devoted to techniques and principles of treatment, several of which are only of historical interest. Doctor Hauser describes a method for the treatment of congenital club-foot which in his hands has given uniformly excellent results over a period of 23 years

I read with interest the excellent review by Drs Greydanus and McAnarney.1 Several of their points concerning combined oral contraceptives deserve discussion, however. The relative potencies of the progestins and estrogens contained in oral contraceptives are controversial. Progestin potency is difficult to measure reliably, and comparisons among progestins can be misleading.2 While animal studies have suggested that mestranol is a weaker estrogen than ethinyl estradiol, a study of human ovulation inhibition suggested that ethinyl estradiol may be weaker than mestranol.3

In addition to O-type stars, this review will discuss the radio and infrared properties of B supergiants and Wolf-Rayet stars, since it is generally accepted that these objects represent later stages in the evolution of O stars. The radio properties of X-ray binaries which exhibit non-thermal emission will not be discussed. Hjellming (1977) gives an excellent review of the radio properties of close binaries, including X-ray binaries.

Recently, new views of the current status of δ Scuti stars have been developed by Rodríguez & Breger (2001) who carried out an excellent review, listing 8 pre-main-sequence (PMS) δ Scuti candidates and examined the possibility of the existence of PMS δ Scuti variable stars. Here we discuss the nature of 4 stars from their list: 2 said to be members of NGC 2264 and 2 of NGC 6823.

When this remarkable book appeared in 1992, it became an instant classic. Combined with its precursor volume by the same authors, Photons and Atoms: An Introduction to Quantum Electrodynamics, these works deftly illuminate the central interactions between light and matter. I refer the reader to the excellent review of Atom–Photon Interactions: Basic Processes and Applications by T.A. Brian Kennedy (American Journal of Physics 61(6), 1993, p. 572).

Negative conditioning or aversion therapy is most frequently thought of in relation to the treatment of alcoholism. The article by Franks (1958) gives an excellent review of the general principles involved. However, Eysenck (1960) includes several papers in his book to illustrate the effectiveness of such treatment in cases of homosexuality, writer's cramp (Liversedge and Sylvester, 1955) and fetishism (Raymond, 1956). A suggestion made in the latter was that the fetishist may well become such because of an unusual capacity for quickly forming conditioned responses, and therefore by the same token might equally easily respond to a de-conditioning technique. For this reason, the following case was treated by behaviour therapy by a psychiatrist and clinical psychologist in collaboration, and is reported in support of Raymond's (1956) advocacy of this technique of treatment in similar cases.

Although an excellent review, the target article displays a bias in favor of reciprocity-based explanations and against alternatives. Tolerated scrounging is more subtle and pervasive than portrayed here. Costly signaling need not be limited to public displays and generalized sharing. The theoretical basis for extensive sharing and other forms of collective action remains unresolved, and standard reciprocity-based explanations are insufficient.

The role that natural resources play in economic development and the effects of investments in natural resources on economic development have been matters of disagreement among economists. An excellent review of the arguments was given by Jansma in his analysis of studies on the investment in small watershed projects for S-71, a Southern Regional Research project C3). The general conclusion was that there were few measurable effects on employment and income from such projects and that these generally were noticeable only after a lag of several years. Colyer, however, in a study of the effects of natural resources on the levels and changes in income and employment in West Virginia concluded that there were links, although not necessary ones, between resource endowments and measures of economic development (1).
