A vigorous academic challenge extending beyond the usual high school curriculum is the purpose of an လhonors programဝ at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, Washington. The program, now on an experimental basis, takes students of exceptional academic promise through mathematics, logic, science, composition, history, literature, and humanistic courses that provide intellectual stimulation not common in the public schools. The student body and faculty have given the program whole-hearted approval and public reaction so far bas been highly favorable.

Probability has been suggested for inclusion in the high school or even junior high school curriculum (for example, probability and statistics is one of the strands in The Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve [Sacramento: California State Department of Education, 1985]). The suggestion appeals to many because probability is viewed as a natural and intuitive subject manageable with very simple mathematics, It is also a good foundation for understanding statistics, which is in prevalent use in today's society. Many teachers are drawn to it because they see all the balls, cards, coins, and dice as ideal teaching tools to make the class interesting.

We report here on our efforts to incorporate linguistics into the high school curriculum in a large midwestern metropolitan area through a university-based initiative — Linguistics in High School (LxHS) — spearheaded by the Department of Linguistics at The Ohio State University. We offer a brief history of the project, and explain our strategy of targeting non-public schools and the practical nature of the reasoning behind this decision. We chronicle the ups and downs of our efforts, ultimately reporting on our success with implementing a linguistics course and a linguistics club at a small local STEM-oriented high school. This partnership between the school and the Linguistics Department has allowed, among other things, for on-site visits by the students to phonetics and sociolinguistics labs. By presenting our challenges, strategies, failures, and successes, we hope that others may be encouraged to evaluate how they can make a difference in their locale and with the resources they have.

When Dick Fiddler, a senior at Lake Washington High School, was named one of the 40 winners in the National Science Talent Search no one was more pleased—or less surprised—than Jim McKeehan, Dick's mathematics teacher. And McKeehan was justly proud: concurrent with the announcement came a letter of congratulation from the Science Clubs of America stating that Dick had listed his teacher as “the one person most influential in the development of my career.”

In 1950, the City College of New York (CCNY) became the first racially-integrated team to win the national championship of college basketball. Three of the players on that team attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, New York. At the time Clinton high school was one of the most academically-rigorous public schools in the city and the United States. During this postwar period Clinton annually sent nearly a third of its graduates to college, this at a time when the national average of high school completion stood at twenty percent. The unofficial school motto etched in yearbooks and the student paper was “college or bust.” Needless to say, DeWitt Clinton strongly encouraged its student body to attend college and for those who did not, they were pushed to excel beyond the limits of their chosen professions. This intellectually competitive academic environment was integrated and more than twenty-percent black. Like their contemporaries, black students were encouraged to pursue opportunities that seemed unthinkable in an era of racial stratification. As a result, Clinton produced a number of black students armed with the skills to navigate the terrain of prejudice and circumvent a number of social barriers. DeWitt Clinton high school was a model for interracial brotherhood while also fostering black leadership. Like Jackie Robinson, whom integrated Major League Baseball in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, the three black athletes who competed on the CCNY team were prepared for the transition of competing on a racially integrated college team, can be partially attributed to their secondary schooling at DeWitt Clinton. This article examines the racial climate of DeWitt Clinton during the postwar years when the three young men were in attendance and how it fostered a culture of Basketball, Books, and Brotherhood.

This article presents a clipping of research on a Continuing Distance Learning Program for 600 High School Math Teachers working in public schools of São Paulo state, Brazil. The formative Program entitled M@tmídias aimed to discuss the use of Learning Objects in the Mathematics teaching process. The research objective was to identify contributions of the use of technology for teaching Trigonometry. The theoretical base was developed by Imbernón’s ideas on continuing teachers’ education, as well as the ones of Mishra and Koehler regarding pedagogical technological content knowledge (TPACK). The research was documentary, and the methodological procedures were: 1) Collection of curricula documents and historical data of the investigated Program; 2) Selection and organisation of materials related to the Trigonometry content, stored in the Program VLE; 3) Treatment and data analysis. The analysis was interpretative and of content, according to Bardin. As a result, in the M@tmídias Program’s historical documents, it was verified that all the Mathematics contents from the High School curriculum of São Paulo State were discussed and, in the first module of the course M@tmídias 2, Trigonometry was studied. Evidence of participants' construction was verified of mathematical content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and technological content knowledge, showing possibilities to the construction of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) of the participants.
