<div>The term 'Normal School' as currently used in New Zealand and as used in this thesis refers to the school attached to a Teachers' Training College. The German teacher training institutions, particularly those in Pruasia, served as a model to other countries. But in the 19th century the Prussian influence came via France. A Frenchman, Victor Cousin, had made a detailed survey of 'The State of Public Education in Prussia', and the translation of his report in 1834 greatly influenced teacher training in England and the United States. Cousin, however, used the word 'Ecole Normale' to refer to the German seminary. He had in mind the name given to the short-lived teacher training institution established by the Convention in 1794. That too owed its existence to German influence. But for some reason or other the French applied the German term 'Normalschule' to the Training College itself. Background and Objective: State anxiety, trait anxiety, anxiety sensitivity and test anxiety are four related but distinct normative anxiety forms that may co-occur amongst youth. The main objective of this study was to assess whether these anxiety forms vary as a function of age and/or presence of stressful school periods. Design and Methods: In total, 1404 Canadian students in Grades 5,6 and 10,11 (58% girls) from 13 private and public schools were assessed on these four anxiety forms using validated questionnaires at two time points: during a stressful examination period and a normal school curriculum period. Results: High school students scored higher on state, trait and test anxiety compared to elementary school students, while the two age groups did not differ on anxiety sensitivity scores. Anxiety scores did not vary as a function of examination periods. Conclusions: Regardless of their age, students appear prone to experience anxiety in a wide range of situations that go beyond examination periods. Students experience anxiety sensitivity early on and levels remain similar during childhood and adolescence, whereas other anxiety forms become more pronounced during high school. These results contribute to a better understanding of normative anxiety in youth. Recommendations for preventive interventions are discussed.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics in Mexico (INEGI, 2010) about 800,000 people over 5 years of age are Mayan speakers in Yucatán, where 538,355 are reported. According to Pineda, cited by Krotz (2008), Valladolid is one of the municipalities in the state with the largest number of Mayan speakers. Since the 2004 curriculum, the Intercultural Bilingual Primary Education Bachelor's Degree (LEPIB in Spanish), serves this population since our students carry out their teaching practices and provide their professional services with children from the municipality, approximately 50% of whom are Mayan speakers in their entirety. Since 2005, the "Juan de Dios Rodríguez Heredia" Higher Normal School has been responsible for teaching the LEPIB, being this school the only one in the state with this degree. Due to the characteristics of the incoming students, most of whom do not speak the Mayan language, several actions have been implemented for the teaching of this language in correspondence with the graduate profile of the 2012 curriculum. The reform of the 2012 curriculum includes bilingual intercultural teaching competencies, which emphasizes the acquisition of linguistic skills of the native language, in this case, the Mayan language.
