The international student mobility of students is one of the elements of internationalization and this mobility has increased in recent years, especially as higher education becomes more international. The mobility of talented students, especially top-ranked students, has been increased by internationalization. These students are one of the new sources of income in the countries where they have studied, with billions of dollars contributions. Countries have become more competitive in order to attract international students to their countries. The aim of this study is to provide a comparative overview of the mobility of international students in Turkey and its impact on the Turkish higher education system in this competitive environment and offer policymakers and practitioners suggestions in this regard. Data on international student mobility were collected from international studies, research, policy papers, legislative documents, national (YÖK) and international organizations (OECD) etc. and it was carried out in the form of a compilation study using the data obtained from the sources referred to.

International student mobility is the core element of the internationalization of higher education. In recent years, a significant change has been observed in the outlook of individuals which is giving a boost to this phenomenon. Within this context, the present chapter analyzed the phenomenon of international student mobility through different approaches by providing critical outlook. An attempt has been made to list the important determinants which influence the decision-making process of international students.

Modern global processes are stated to have significantly influenced transformations in the higher education system. On the other hand, internationalisation of higher education has become a key factor in the development of global processes. Accor-dingly, it becomes necessary to determine the specific nature of the internationalisation processes of higher education in different countries, as well as the involvement thereof in the processes of academic mobility at establishing the educational space transformation under the conditions of globalization, at grounding the changing place and role of universities as higher education internationalisation contribute to enhancing the convergence of national educational systems, providing a significant influence on the level of competitiveness of national economies. The authors define the peculiarities of attrac-ting countries to mobility processes and systematise the waves of international student mobility, taking into account the geopolitical and geo-economic factors of positive and negative influence of institutional drivers. Furthermore, dynamic shifts in international student mobility are calculated and the regional distribution of foreign students by educational level is determined. The purpose of the article is to identify the waves and substantiate the factors of international student mo-bility in the context of the transformation of the global market of educational services.

The need to support International Student Mobility has been globally accepted and has been actively promoted by some countries. India is a prominent source country of international students to many leading host countries. As compared to the large number of Indian students studying abroad the number of international students studying in India is low and this is a matter of concern. It is therefore imperative that a concerted and well laid out strategy is put in place to attract international students to Indian campuses. The purpose of this chapter is to study the ongoing policy initiatives aimed at enhancing international student mobility in Indian higher education, to list and analyze international student mobility trends, and to discuss the way forward by specifically identifying aspects that would act as enablers to international student inflow into Indian higher education institutions.

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and international student mobility from an alternative perspective and to reveal descriptive findings.Design/methodology/approachThis study follows qualitative research methodology. In accordance with the purpose of the study, the data were collected by the literature review and then it was analyzed by the descriptive analysis method. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on international student mobility and the relationships between these variables are explained by tables and classifications.FindingsAccording to the findings obtained, the restrictions in physical student mobility and shutdown are observed as the biggest challenges that occurred in higher education during the COVID-19. On a global scope, international student mobility has experienced a major break. Physical campus life is still on standby. Online higher education does not give any campus life as before. Students cannot benefit form city's or country's facilities when studying online at home country. The collaboration between university and business has been declined and this is even more discouraging for international students. The hybrid education model produced an intermediate solution in this period. On the other hand, the rise of online education has created new techniques for higher education. University students who cannot go abroad attend different countries lectures and education programs. But also a new challenge has come as the access of online platforms in under developing countries university students. Online education system also discussed in terms of creating inequality in higher education.Research limitations/implicationsThis study focused on student mobility and not focused about academic mobility.Practical implicationsIt is seen that the traditional higher education system has been adapted into online distance higher education system since COVID-19 crises began globally. On the other side, it is observed that most of studies have focused the effect of COVID-19 on university students based on the transition to online education. When considering the effect of pandemic process on the mobility of international students and higher education, the authors can suggest policy makers to develop new higher education protocols and teaching models supporting key issues (economic, social, health, education and equalization) in the long-term. Higher education institutes have been able to produce creative and innovative solutions for both education and communication during the pandemic process.Social implicationsUniversity students who cannot go abroad attend different countries lectures and education programs. But also a new challenge has come as the access of online platforms in under developing countries university students. Online education system also discussed in terms of creating inequality in higher education.Originality/valueThis study provides a new perspective for international student mobility in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. This is an emerging issue for the literature. This study is original with its approach to the subject from a global perspective through reviewing the studies of different countries. This study points out key variables for determining the effect of COVID-19 on international student mobility for future studies. When employing quantitative research models, the current key variables can guide them.

The movement of students across borders has had profound impact on higher education policy development. This article seeks to unpack international student mobility through a discourse approach, using five policy documents on international student mobility from well-established recruiters of international students. Eight headline findings are presented in this article. It was found that there are many different types of international students. Higher education institutions are located at the heart of the action, and provide a broad range of services across four distinctive stages of the students’ sojourn. Governments reaffirm their commitment in providing good higher education experience to the international student population. However, there are signs that the students’ presence has shaped higher education policies to be more service-, market-, and reputation driven. The ethics of care concept is proposed to balance the present role of higher education as “wealth creation agents,” and to ensure both institutions and students reap the benefits of international higher education.
