ABSTRACT The main objective of the study was to establish the influence of Porter's generic strategies and firm performance in petroleum marketing companies using Vivo Energy Limited as a case study. The business environment in emerging economies has witnessed intense competition among firms. Petroleum marketing companies in Kenya have had to face such conditions in a competitive environment prompting the firms to develop strategies that match their capabilities to market demands. The specific objectives of the study were: to examine how leadership cost strategy and; focus strategy affect the firm performance of Vivo Energy Limited. The study was premised on the; resource-based view, competitive advantage and contingency theories. This study adopted a descriptive research design. The target population was 237 employees at Vivo Energy Limited. Stratified proportion sampling was used to obtain a sample of 108 respondents. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to determine the relationship between the study variables. Pearson correlation analysis was carried out to establish the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was checked to reveal the overall model significance. The study established that there was a positive relationship between the cost leadership strategy and firm performance. Analysis also revealed that focus strategy had a substantial positive correlation, establishing that focus strategy and firm performance are fundamentally related, and that the variation in firm performance can be explained by a unit change in focus strategy. The study recommended that the management of Vivo Energy Limited should adopt cost leadership strategy that is focused on gaining competitive advantage byselling their products at average prices to earn higher profits than competitors in the sector or below the average industry prices to gain market share. It also recommends that Vivo Energy should consider employing focus strategies that are concentrated on narrow segment aimed at achieving cost advantage or differentiation. This paper attempts to shed light on the role of learning orientations of firms and their adoption of Porter’s generic strategies on four dependent variables: Behavioral innovativeness, product innovativeness, technological innovativeness and, ultimately, firm performance. Hierarchical regressions were run with data from a random sample of 121 firms operating in Turkey. Findings indicate that internally-focused learning, market-focused learning and differentiation strategy have significant effects on the three innovativeness dimensions. When firm performance is included as the eventual outcome variable into the analysis, internally-focused learning, focus strategy and product innovativeness emerge as its main predictors. In fast-paced, highly unpredictable market environments, managers can make use of these findings to their benefit in terms of elevating their firms’ innovativeness and performance levels.

Porter’s generic strategies are important for organizations to gain a competitive edge in their respective market. This is especially true for companies in Asia, the world’s largest continental economy in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) which is also characterized by foreign exchange restrictions, anti-trust laws, and price wars. This paper focuses on the literature on Porter’s generic strategies within the contexts of the three biggest Asian countries (China, Japan, and India). Our review highlights the generic strategies pursued by multinationals in Asia and factors to consider when executing strategic plans in business expansion to the region.

This paper reports the findings of a study that investigates the differences between Japanese, British and American companies (that are operating in the United States) in how they use Porter’s generic strategies of low cost, differentiation, and focus/niche. Specifically, the study addresses the following issues: (1) What constitutes the three different generic strategies of low cost, differentiation and focus/niche? (2) Do American, Japanese, and British companies use different generic strategies in order to gain competitive advantage?

Innovation in the service/retail sector has not been fully examined in the non-Western literature. This preliminary work presents a study that was conducted in Shanghai, China. Three sets of the literature are consulted: Porter’s Generic Strategies Model, Hunt’s Resource Advantage Theory (R-A), and previous studies in the service and retail sectors. Findings developed from six selected successful Chinese supermarket companies have identified three types of innovation adopted by Chinese retailers: Technology based, non-technology based, and resource based innovation. The study takes a qualitative approach by using the methods of documentation survey and in-depth interviews with a panel of ten supermarket experts. Some managerial implications are explicated, and the limitations of the study and directions for future studies are discussed.

Innovation is seen as a competitive advantage that many companies use to ensure the continuity and success of your business.NP 4457:2007 is the Portuguese norm that supports management, based on a model of innovation backed up by interfaces and interaction between technical/scientific knowledge, its specific mechanisms and the overall society.Our paper aims to analyse innovation activities and the involvement of human resources in Portuguese firms certified by NP4457 and associated to the implementation of Research, Development, and Innovation (RD&I) management systems. We have collected the data through IPAC’s database, using a survey administered to all firms.Our results suggest the existence of a Human Resources (HR) involvement policy, customers and suppliers. The involvement of stakeholders with innovation activities results of its acceptance as a mechanism able to generate wealth, with benefits for both firms and the community.

Purpose This study aims at investigating the effect of psychological empowerment on job burnout and competitive advantage with the mediating role of organizational commitment and creativity. Design/methodology/approach The statistical population included all the managers and staffs of Tooka Company in Iran, and for data analysis, 120 completed questionnaires were used. Data analysis was carried out by SPSS 18 and Amos 20 software and structural equation modeling method. To test the mediating relationships, bootstrap method was used. Findings The findings showed that psychological empowerment has a significant direct effect on job burnout and competitive advantage. Also, psychological empowerment has a significant indirect effect on job burnout through the mediating role of organizational commitment. In addition, psychological empowerment has a significant indirect effect on competitive advantage through the mediating role of organizational creativity. Originality/value This study is among the first to investigate the relationship between psychological empowerment, job burnout, competitive advantage, organizational commitment and creativity.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential for utilizing a unique resource, such as the Historic Portsmouth Harbor, in order to differentiate the local brand. Design/methodology/approach – The objective of the paper is to examine the role of unique local resources and attractions as a source of competitive advantage through destination branding. Findings – The main findings of the paper indicate that policy makers and destination managers should more proactively utilize the unique elements of the Historic Portsmouth Harbor “brand,” as opposed to the commonplace “waterfront city” brand. This could be achieved by staging events of international significance or through a bid for gaining world heritage status. In addition to that, the paper argues that in order for this branding initiative to have a higher impact, a prominent high profile individual should be appointed. This individual could act as a leader or “brand ambassador” in order to attract stakeholder interest and participation. Originality/value – The paper could be of value to destination managers and marketing organizations in a local, sub-regional and regional level.
