On behalf of the editorial board and the entire value chain including authors, reviewers, and staff, I am delighted to present the Volume 9 Number 3 edition of the of the African Journal of Gender, Society and Development (AJGSD). This is the last issue for 2020 and marks the end of my first year as guest editor. It is therefore a time of reflection and an opportunity to thank all the people who have contributed in one way or another to the success of the journal over the year. First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge and appreciate the authors who have continued to display their unwavering support to the journal with an ever-increasing rate of high-quality submissions. I say a big thank you to all our esteemed authors and hope they will continue to choose AJGSD as their favored place of publication.

This article reports findings from a 1996 survey that examined job preparedness of library directors at four-year colleges in twelve midwestern states. The survey measured: (1) qualifications possessed at the time each person obtained his or her first director’s position; and (2) the skills and abilities directors felt were essential to surviving and doing well in their positions. One hundred fifty-eight directors returned questionnaires for a response rate of 84 percent. Participants in the 1995–1996 College Library Director Mentor Program also supplied a list of essential skills for the first year in a new position.

The International Journal of Engineering Materials and Manufacture (IJEMM) is celebrating its first year of online open access publication. On this occasion, I would like to congratulate editorial board, reviewers, authors, readers, and subscribers. IJEMM will be published quarterly. In the first year 2017, we planned for four issues where the first issue includes 5 articles in addition to this editorial. The initiative of this journal was taken in the 2015 and then with several meetings and discussions, finally platform was formed in July 2016 to nurture continuously growing in interest in the area of materials and manufacturing engineering. It was felt that the increasing number of researchers and academicians in the materials and manufacturing engineering community needs a dedicated journal for the publication of their research outputs. We have formed a strong editorial board for timely publication with high quality consistent review and proofreading.

The start of a new issue in a new year is always an opportunity to look back and to say thank you to the members of the editorial board and the editorial staff who made it possible that we were able to publish four interesting issues in Volume 24 last year. First of all, I want to thank the scientific community for submitting a large number of excellent original research papers to Laser and Particle Beams. In 2006, we were able to publish 71 articles plus editorial material and corrections. The average article in the journal is now 8–9 printed pages, and we have thus achieved the editorial goal to offer the community a place to publish their results without general space restrictions. Authors have accepted this opportunity to present their material with the necessary details. This seems to be very important to readers and authors as well, and we see that for a second consecutive year many articles in Laser and Particle Beams are referenced already during the first year, which is remarkable for a small journal with only four issues per year.
