This paper gives an overview of the computational complexity of all the equivalences in the linear/branching time hierarchy [vG90a] and the preorders<br />in the corresponding hierarchy of preorders. We consider finite state or regular processes as well as infinite-state BPA [BK84b] processes. <br />A distinction, which turns out to be important in the finite-state processes, is that of simulation-like equivalences/preorders vs. trace-like equivalences<br />and preorders. Here we survey various known complexity results for these relations. For regular processes, all simulation-like equivalences and preorders are decidable in polynomial time whereas all trace-like equivalences and preorders are PSPACE-Complete. We also consider interesting special<br />classes of regular processes such as deterministic, determinate, unary, locally unary, and tree-like processes and survey the known complexity results in<br />these special cases. For infinite-state processes the results are quite different. For the class of context-free processes or BPA processes any preorder or equivalence beyond bisimulation is undecidable but bisimulation equivalence is polynomial time<br />decidable for normed BPA processes and is known to be elementarily decidable in the general case. For the class of BPP processes, all preorders and equivalences apart from bisimilarity are undecidable. However, bisimilarity<br />is decidable in this case and is known to be decidable in polynomial time for normed BPP processes.

We consider the computational complexity of finding an optimal deadlock recovery. It is known that for an arbitrary number of resource types the problem is NP-hard even when the total cost of deadlocked jobs and the total number of resource units are “small” relative to the number of deadlocked jobs. It is also known that for one resource type the problem is NP-hard when the total cost of deadlocked jobs and the total number of resource units are “large” relative to the number of deadlocked jobs. In this paper we show that for one resource type the problem is solvable in polynomial time when the total cost of deadlocked jobs or the total number of resource units is “small” relative to the number of deadlocked jobs. For fixed m ⩾ 2 resource types, we show that the problem is solvable in polynomial time when the total number of resource units is “small” relative to the number of deadlocked jobs. On the other hand, when the total number of resource units is “large”, the problem becomes NP-hard even when the total cost of deadlocked jobs is “small” relative to the number of deadlocked jobs. The results in the paper, together with previous known ones, give a complete delineation of the complexity of this problem under various assumptions of the input parameters.

Copyless streaming string transducers (copyless SST) have been introduced by R. Alur and P. Černý in 2010 as a one-way deterministic automata model to define transductions of finite strings. Copyless SST extend deterministic finite state automata with a set of variables in which to store intermediate output strings, and those variables can be combined and updated all along the run, in a linear manner, i.e., no variable content can be copied on transitions. It is known that copyless SST capture exactly the class of MSO-definable string-to-string transductions, and are as expressive as deterministic two-way transducers. They enjoy good algorithmic properties. Most notably, they have decidable equivalence problem (in PSpace). On the other hand, HDT0L systems have been introduced for a while, the most prominent result being the decidability of the equivalence problem. In this paper, we propose a semantics of HDT0L systems in terms of transductions, and use it to study the class of deterministic copyful SST. Our contributions are as follows: (i)HDT0L systems and total deterministic copyful SST have the same expressive power, (ii)the equivalence problem for deterministic copyful SST and the equivalence problem for HDT0L systems are inter-reducible, in quadratic time. As a consequence, equivalence of deterministic SST is decidable, (iii)the functionality of non-deterministic copyful SST is decidable, (iv)determining whether a non-deterministic copyful SST can be transformed into an equivalent non-deterministic copyless SST is decidable in polynomial time.

In this paper we consider the problem of efficient computation of cross-moments of a vector random variable represented by a stochastic context-free grammar. Two types of cross-moments are discussed. The sample space for the first one is the set of all derivations of the context-free grammar, and the sample space for the second one is the set of all derivations which generate a string belonging to the language of the grammar. In the past, this problem was widely studied, but mainly for the cross-moments of scalar variables and up to the second order. This paper presents new algorithms for computing the cross-moments of an arbitrary order, while the previously developed ones are derived as special cases.

We introduce a logic to express structural properties of automata with string inputs and, possibly, outputs in some monoid. In this logic, the set of predicates talking about the output values is parametric. We then consider three particular automata models (finite automata, transducers and automata weighted by integers here called sum-automata) and instantiate the generic logic for each of them. We give tight complexity results for the three logics with respect to the model-checking problem, depending on whether the formula is fixed or not. We study the expressiveness of our logics by expressing classical structural patterns characterising for instance finite ambiguity and polynomial ambiguity in the case of finite automata, determinisability and finite-valuedness in the case of transducers and sum-automata. As a consequence of our complexity results, we directly obtain that these classical properties can be decided in polynomial time.

The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) and its extension via activity modes (MRCPSP) are well-established scheduling frameworks that have found numerous applications in a broad range of settings related to artificial intelligence. Unsurprisingly, the problem of finding a suitable schedule in these frameworks is known to be NP-complete; however, aside from a few results for special cases, we have lacked an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the complexity of the problems from the viewpoint of natural restrictions of the considered instances. In the first part of our paper, we develop new algorithms and give hardness-proofs in order to obtain a detailed complexity map of (M)RCPSP that settles the complexity of all 1024 considered variants of the problem defined in terms of explicit restrictions of natural parameters of instances. In the second part, we turn to implicit structural restrictions defined in terms of the complexity of interactions between individual activities. In particular, we show that if the treewidth of a graph which captures such interactions is bounded by a constant, then we can solve MRCPSP in polynomial time.
