We discuss the cognitive aspects of skills training in progressive die design, and the ways to incorporate them into the ITS. We also give an overview of the IPD progressive die design system and explain how the design knowledge base can be exploited for development into an ITS. In this paper, we describe IPD_ITS, the tutoring module of IPD and explain its implementation for burring.

This paper describes how a knowledge-based system for automating the process planning of progressive die design is enhanced and developed into a tutoring aid for tool and die trainees. This is achieved by incorporating an explanation engine that scans the status of the plan stored in the knowledge-base and provides reports to the user. According to the status of the plan, actions are suggested by the explanation engine to guide the user to achieve his goals. As the system is able to provide a ‘first-guess’ solution to each step of the planning process, it allows the trainee to develop the plans very quickly. It also serves as an effective tutoring aid for learning a large number of die design case studies within the time allocated for the subject.

The computer-assisted configuration of progressive die is a computationally mixed problem. This paper describes the progressive die design problem and reviews some existing research related to the configuration of progressive dies. It explains the model-based reasoning approach used to configure the intermediate and final solutions to the design problem. In particular, the various shape representation and spatial reasoning techniques are presented. Finally, a computer software architecture for the die design system is presented.

Progressive die has been widely used in product manufacturing field. This paper proposed a NX-based computer server support design method. The equivalent stress, resilience, equivalent strain, attenuation, and forming were analyzed in detail. The key technology of confirming blank dimension and stock layout of server support were explicated clearly.

A knowledge-based intelligent die design system for automotive panels is developed by UG software platform. This system can accomplish design intelligently and automatically through engineering rules in the knowledge base. The framework and implementation of the system are discussed. Finally, a case study of the panel die design of car trunk in the system is implemented, which illustrates working process, working principle, implement method and practicability of the system, and validates the advanced design conception proposed in this paper.
