Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is one of the most common diseases in the global swine industry. PRRSV is characterized by rapid mutation rates and extensive genetic divergences. It is divided into two genotypes, which are composed of several distinct sub-lineages. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the cross-protective efficacy of Fostera PRRS MLV, an attenuated lineage 8 strain, against the heterologous challenge of a lineage 3 isolate. Eighteen pigs were randomly divided into mock, MLV and unvaccinated (UnV) groups. The pigs in the MLV group were administered Fostera PRRS vaccine at 3 weeks of age and both the MLV and UnV groups were inoculated with a virulent PRRSV isolate at 7 weeks. Clinically, the MLV group showed a shorter duration and a lower magnitude of respiratory distress than the UnV group. The average days of fever in the MLV group was 3.0 ± 0.5, which was significantly lower than the 6.2 ± 0.5 days of the UnV group (P < 0.001). The average daily weight gains of the mock, MLV and UnV groups were 781 ± 31, 550 ± 44 and 405 ± 26 g/day, respectively, during the post-challenge phase. The pathological examinations revealed that the severity of interstitial pneumonia in the MLV group was milder compared to the UnV group. Furthermore, PRRSV viremia titers in the MLV pigs were consistently lower (101−101.5 genomic copies) than those of the UnV pigs from 4 to 14 DPC. In conclusion, vaccination with Fostera PRRS MLV confers partial cross-protection against heterologous challenge of a virulent lineage 3 PRRSV isolate.

School peer reviews are increasingly part of the evaluation and school improvement landscape for school leaders and teachers in a number of countries. This article describes the growth of peer review, particularly in England, and its emergence elsewhere (for example, Australia, across Europe and in Chile). While these approaches provide a useful form of professional and moral accountability, this article identifies ways in which they could go further to empower practitioners through the use of an enquiry approach, combining formal academic knowledge with practitioner knowledge and school-based data. The term collaborative peer enquiry (CPE) is suggested as a way to explore this potential. The article sets out a typology of action research as a form of professional learning (type 1), practical philosophy (type 2) or as a form of critical social science (type 3). Four examples are given of different peer review models, two of them CPE approaches, and these are analysed using the above typology. A distinction is made between some peer review models that mimic external inspections and err towards self-policing, and others that encourage open enquiry and learning. In particular, the CPE models show the potential as forms of type 2 and type 3 action research. The role of peer review and CPE in the accountability system, in leadership development, and challenges for these models are explored in the discussion.

Aim and objective: Clerodendrum thomsoniae leaves are used in Cameroon to manage diabetes and its related disorders. The study aimed at investigating the antidiabetic effect of the aqueous extract on diet and dexamethasone induced diabetic rats. Methods: Young mature leaves of C thomsoniae were dried, finely powdered and submitted to aqueous extraction. The dehydrated extract was tested in rats at 3 doses 312.5, 625 and 1250 mg/kg based on the local use of the plant. The effect of the extract on the fasting blood glucose in normoglycemic rats and MACAPOS 1 type diet induced diabetic rats, using respectively glibenclamide and metformin as positive control groups, were investigated. Results: AECT significantly reduced blood glucose levels in normoglycemic rats (p<0.05) two hours after administration, from 83±2 mg/dL to 57.39±1.7 mg/dL with the dose of 1250 mg/kg. given the highest reduction rate of 30.86%. In normoglycemic rats 30 minutes after oral glucose overload, the maximum reduction rate was observed with glibenclamide 5 mg / kg and calculated at 49.90% followed by 36.39%, for the extract at 1250 mg / kg. After 30 days of repeated oral administration, AECT produced a reduction on blood glucose levels (p<0.05) in type 2 diabetic rats. This reduction in blood sugar was much more expressed with the dose of 1250mg/kg (73.52±0.71 mg/dL) followed by metformin 38mg/kg (70.21±0.89 mg/dL) as the normal control with no significant difference (P < 0.05).
