Precambrian basement in the Windsor–Chatham–Sarnia area is covered by Paleozoic rocks that are up to 1300 m thick. The basement surface is characterized by a northeast–southwest arch system with a relief of about 350 m. Extensive oil and gas drilling has penetrated and sampled this basement, and an examination of core and chip samples from 133 holes and an assessment of the magnetic anomaly map of the area have been used to produce a lithologic map of the Precambrian basement. The predominant rocks are granite gneisses and syenite gneisses but also significant are gabbros, granodiorite gneisses, and metasedimentary rocks. The average foliation dips 50° and is inferred to have a northeasterly trend. The Precambrian basement has been regarded as part of the Grenville Province. An apparent Rb–Sr whole rock isochron, for predominantly meta-igneous rocks, yields an age of 1560 ± 140 Ma. This we interpret as pre-Grenvillian, surviving the later imprint of the Grenvillian Orogeny. Points excluded from the isochron register ages of 1830, 915, and 670 Ma, and can be interpreted as geologically meaningful.

The Paleogene chapter of Svalbard history is a quite distinct one. It begins with an unconformity, albeit a sub-parallel one representing a late Cretaceous hiatus. Resting on Albian and older strata, the Van Mijenfjorden Group of six formations totals a thickness of about 2500 m in the Central Basin of Spitsbergen. The outcrop is ringed by Early Cretaceous strata in a broad syncline (Fig. 20.1). The strata are largely non-marine, coal-bearing sandstones, with interbedded marine shales and they range in age through Paleocene and Eocene.From latest Paleocene through Eocene time the West Spitsbergen Orogeny caused (Spitsbergian) deformation along the western border of the Central Basin, but it is most conspicuous in the folding and thrusting of Carboniferous through Early Cretaceous rocks. The orogen extended westwards to and beyond the western coast of central and southern Spitsbergen including Precambrian and Early Paleozoic rocks, which had already been involved in earlier tectogenesis. The eastward-verging thrusting extended beneath the Tertiary basin and reactivated older faults to the east.In the wider context Svalbard, adjacent to the north coast of Greenland, had been an integral part of Pangea from Carboniferous through Cretaceous time. The northward extension of the Atlantic opening reached and initiated the spreading of the Arctic Eurasia Basin at the beginning of the Paleogene Period. This led to the separation of Svalbard together with the Barents Shelf and northern Europe from Greenland by dextral strike-slip transform faulting. This article provides stratigraphic and geochronological data from a central part of Gondwana’s northern margin — the Moroccan Meseta Domain. This region, located to the north of the Anti-Atlas area with extensive outcrops of Precambrian and lower Paleozoic rocks, has hitherto not received much attention with regard to its Precambrian geology. Detrital and volcanic zircon ages have been used to constrain sedimentary depositional ages and crustal affinities of sedimentary source rocks in stratigraphic key sections. Based on this, a four-step paleotectonic evolution of the Meseta Domain from the Ediacaran until the Early Ordovician is proposed. This evolution documents the transition from a terrestrial volcanic setting during the Ediacaran to a short-lived carbonate platform setting during the early Cambrian. The latter then evolved into a rifted margin with deposition of thick siliciclastic successions in graben structures during the middle to late Cambrian. The detritus in these basins was of local origin, and a contribution from a broader source area (encompassing parts of the West African Craton) can only be demonstrated for postrifting, i.e., laterally extensive sandstone bodies that seal the former graben. In a broader paleotectonic context, it is suggested that this Cambrian rifting is linked to the opening of the Rheic Ocean, and that several peri-Gondwanan terranes (Meguma and Cadomia–Iberia) may have been close to the Meseta Domain before drifting, albeit some of them seem to have been constituted by a distinctly different basement.
