A vibration having a character of self-excited chatter oscillation known from machine tools is observed during intermittent motion of ink rollers of offset printing machines. This vibration occurs under specific operating conditions and is often accompanied by an increased noise level. To explain this unusual vibration behavior, a simple analytical model of two rollers interaction is derived. The calculated oscillation is compared with the measurement of ductor roller displacement. The model results confirm the possibility of self-excited vibration development in the presence of viscous forces, negative damping effects and continuous supply of external energy from roller rotation.

Geneva mechanism is used as a mechanism for transforming rotary motion into intermittent motion and is able to achieve a precise movement and its lock, which makes it usable in many areas, particularly in timer devices, measurement devices, feed mechanisms, positioning mechanisms, pick-up and transport machinery, textile machinery etc. The studied literature showed that, although it has long been known, this mechanism is still interesting for contemporary researchers. The present paper proposes a method of synthesis and a computer-aided kinematic and dynamic analysis for this mechanism. Based on input data, it was developed a computer program that computes the dimensions of components of Geneva mechanism and determines velocity acceleration and displacement of Geneva wheel. The dimensional calculated data were also used to obtain 3D model of the mechanism.

As an intermittent motion mechanism the three-gear drive offers several easily obtained motion characteristics. The design regions in which these characteristics are found are defined by particular input/output velocity and acceleration equations which are presented graphically by a series of design charts.
