This paper addresses itself to the outcomes of a field study which was carried out to identify Jordanian EFL students' attitudes towards using group work in EFL classrooms. The study sample consisted of 179 students enrolled in English 101, an elementary language skills course taught at Al- Huson University College, Al -Balqa' Applied University, Jordan. A questionnaire was used to investigate the subjects' attitudes. The findings show that approximately two-thirds of the participants are either very extrovert or somewhat extrovert, i.e. they have positive attitudes towards participating in group work in EFL classes. In contrast, only a third are either somewhat introvert or very introvert, i.e., they do not like to take part in group work in EFL classes. Moreover, the data show that neither the subjects' gender nor their secondary school stream (vocational, scientific, or literary) has any significant effect on their preferences.

<p>This paper presents the results of a field study which was carried out to identify Jordanian EFL students' attitudes towards learning English idioms. The study sample consisted of 94 students majoring in Translation and English Language and Literature at Yarmouk University, Jordan. A questionnaire was used to investigate the subjects' attitudes. The findings show that the majority of the participants have positive attitudes towards learning English idioms as they believe in their importance for achieving effective communication in English. Moreover, the data show that neither the subjects' gender nor their academic major has a significant effect on their attitudes towards learning English idioms as most of the participants displayed a highly positive attitude towards learning these idioms.</p>

This article attempts to explore the use of first language (Arabic) in the Libyan EFL classrooms as well as teachers' and students' attitudes towards using it. To this end, 5 Libyan EFL teachers and 143 Libyan EFL undergraduate students from the English department of Sebha University took part in the study. Data were gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings of the study indicated that the Libyan EFL students had positive attitudes towards using Arabic in the classroom to some degree; however, they were in favor of using English more than Arabic. It was also found that the students employed Arabic frequently to translate words from English into Arabic. The results also reported that the Libyan EFL teachers used Arabic in their classrooms to accomplish many purposes such as helping students to understand, giving instructions, emphasizing information and giving the meaning of new and unfamiliar words. Additionally, teachers held positive attitudes towards the use of Arabic inside the classroom, but they were of the opinion that Arabic can be only used in certain cases and it should not be overused.

Teaching English through an effective curriculum enables EFL students to establish and achieve effective communication. The study aims to investigate issues affecting EFL students by learning English and discussing the role of Portal to English syllabuses in developing the language skills of Qatari school students. Research has harmonized the analytical approach. The required information was collected from a questionnaire distributed to twenty (20) Qatari EFL teachers in preparatory schools. Then, the data was analyzed according to the SPSS system. The results show that the Portal course syllabuses of Qatari preparatory schools introduce language activities that promote oral interaction in addition to the previous syllabuses. This current syllabus motivates students and builds a good understanding of learning English and improving language skills. The textbooks emphasize the use of English in social media and in the practice of Qataris customs and traditions. Portal lessons emphasize oral interactions with group work and discussions. Vocabulary and writing activities are presented and tested in many units in the Portal course series.

Indonesian EFL learners face challenges in comprehending English phonemes as it becomes one of the significant predictors of English literacy. Hence, the English Phonetics subject is considered one of the most difficult ones, making the teaching and learning process less effective. Addressing Indonesian EFL learners’ attitudes toward English phonetics teaching is significant to improve phonetics teaching, yet, research on this has not received much attention. This present study was conducted to explore EFL learners’ attitudes toward English phonetic learning. A quantitative approach with survey design was employed involving 112 Indonesian EFL students. The researchers identified students’ attitudes using an adapted questionnaire from Lintunen and Mäkilähde (2015). Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 was utilized to analyze the data. The results indicate that Indonesian EFL students perform positive attitudes toward English phonetic learning, although they confess that phonetics is challenging. It implies that phonetics learning is potential and promising to support their English fluency; hence, lecturers need to make phonetics Learning more enjoyable, easier and participating in drawing the students' full engagement by considering their preferences and attitude toward phonetics learning.

The study explores students’ perspectives towards virtual classes and the impact of such classes on EFL learners’ communication skills. Such study is valuable due to the lack of research works that investigate EFL students’ attitudes towards the effectiveness of such classes. Also, the findings can substantially improve the Saudi virtual education. Regarding the questions of the study, it answers two main questions: What are EFL learners’ attitudes towards virtual classes? What is the impact of virtual classes on EFL learners’ communication skills from students’ perspectives? To achieve the objectives of this study, a questionnaire was administered to 50 EFL students of levels seven and eight in English Department at the College of Sciences and Humanities at Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University. The findings indicated that students had positive attitudes toward virtual classrooms. Such classes could enhance their communication, and improve their technical and self-learning skills. Based on these results, some recommendations were suggested that could be taken into consideration in future studies. First, further studies should be done to investigate the impact of virtual classes on other science classes such as Chemistry and Medicine in the COVID- 19 period. Second, such study should be conducted with a different sample of students (male). Finally, the same research can be applied to faculty members to explore their attitudes toward virtual education and its effect on communication skills.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to investigate secondary school students’ pedagogical use of information communication and technologies (ICT), their attitudes toward integration of ICT and the differences in their attitudes based on gender, school type and location. Design/methodology/approach – The data was collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis. Findings – The study revealed that students’ use of ICT to support their learning was low. Students mostly used ICT to communicate with peers. Students’ methods of assimilating knowledge were through teacher-centred teaching, even though they somewhat used ICT for collaborative and inquiry learning. Students in public schools perceived the use of ICT more valuable than students in private schools. Also, the study provided evidence that students in urban and rural schools differed in their attitudes in terms of perceived value and cost of ICT use, but no differences in attitude in terms of expectancy of success were found to exist among students in all locations. Originality/value – The study provided further evidence that the value of ICT positively related to students’ pedagogical use of ICT, but the effect was very limited. This implies that although students have positive attitudes toward the benefits of ICT in learning; many do not integrate the technology into their learning. Lastly, the study was able to provide additional evidence that perceived cost negatively related to students’ pedagogical use of technology, but the result was very small. This indicates that since many students do not utilize ICT in their learning they rarely encounter barriers or challenges when it comes to the integration of the technology into their studies.

Purpose: This empirical study investigated the impact of the professional qualifications of Physical Education (PE) teachers on secondary school students’ attitudes towards their PE classes. Education in general and teaching and learning in particular are multidimensional phenomena and thus it is essential to determine and define these dimensions to sustain quality in education. From the psychological perspective, along with various factors, teachers’ personality and qualifications may affect students’ learning process. In this respect, effective teachers can foster students’ learning process and help develop positive attitudes towards a course. Material: In order to fulfill the research aim, the data were elicited through a questionnaire from five hundred and ninety-two secondary school students from grades 9, 10 and 11in North Cyprus to be analyzed quantitatively. Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test and Shapiro-Wilk Testwere run to test normality. Seeing that the data set was not well-modeled by a normal distribution, a Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was run to measure the association between the variables. Results: A very strong positive correlation was found between the professional qualifications of teachers and the participants’ attitudes towards PE classes. Conclusions: The results indicated that there was a significant relationship between the qualifications of the teachers and the students’ attitudes towards PE classes. More specifically, it was found that the higher the perceptions of students of the professional qualifications of PE teachers, the more positive attitudes they developed towards PE classes.

Many studies in different EFL contexts have shown positive impacts of extensive reading (ER) on learners’ language abilities, reading proficiency, motivation, and attitude toward reading. With the aim of investigating the appropriateness and effectiveness of ER in a context where there is no strong culture for reading, this study surveyed students’ attitudes towards ER, their perceptions on the benefits they gain from ER, and the challenges they encountered during its implementation. Utilizing interview, it also examined teachers’ perspectives on the possibilities and trajectories of ER within the institution after its first implementation. The study sample consisted of 365 randomly selected male Saudi college-level EFL students who answered the questionnaire and 5 teachers who separately responded to the unstructured interview. Results revealed that students have positive attitudes towards ER. They believe that ER is very useful, interesting, enriching, and empowering that it can make them better readers and learners. Results also revealed that ER provides various linguistic benefits. However, there can be challenges such as time constraints, lack of resources, and linguistic and cultural barriers. Analysis of the interview with teachers revealed that there can be many possibilities to improve ER implementation. The study concluded with its limitations and important recommendations.
