During the 1950s, industry insiders jokingly referred to the unsuccessful American Broadcasting Company as the “Almost Broadcasting Company.” ABC turned to sports to forge an identity in network television and build a stable audience. It initially contracted its sports programming to Edgar Scherick’s Sports Programs Inc., which it purchased in 1961 and renamed ABC Sports. Scherick hired NBC producer Roone Arledge to oversee his college football broadcasts. Arledge developed a dramatized approach to sports television that would “take viewers to the game” and offer what he called an “up close and personal” perspective. Chapter 1 outlines ABC’s early history and turn to sports programming to build a niche in the television industry. It then discusses Arledge’s hiring, the development of his aesthetic, and the first ABC productions that embodied his effort to “add show business to sports” and set in motion the subsidiary’s main practices.

“Afterword: Adulterated Verse, the Modernist Remix,” reflects on the legacy of the Victorian verse-novel by addressing the genre’s substantial influence on modernist fiction. Circling back to the beginning, the Afterword considers Virginia Woolf’s response to Aurora Leigh in her essays and in The Waves (both 1831). It then returns to the topic of Chapter 1 by looking at how adultery enters a series of high modernist novels accompanied both by nods to some of the Victorian poems considered in the previous pages and by the same kinds of formal fracturing that are characteristic of the verse-novel genre. By locating traces of verse-novels in works such as Henry James’s The Golden Bowl and James Joyce’s Ulysses, the Afterword shows how, rather than a literary dead end, the Victorian verse-novel was a brave new beginning for generic experimentation.

The authors carried out geological mapping in August 1987 at the south-eastern boundary of the Finnefjeld gneiss complex around 65°N. The field work was supported by the GGU cutter 'J. F. Johnstrup'. Based on reconnaissance mapping in the 1950s Berthelsen (1951, 1957,1962) divided the Archaean gneiss terrain in the southem Sukkertoppen district between Godthåbsfjord and Søndre Isortoq into three major tectonic units: the Nordland, the Finnefjeld and the Alangua complexes. This division was also followed by Noe-Nygaard & Ramberg (1961).

Chapter 1 provides an introduction to this book’s central argument that speech and/or writing produced by queerqueen personalities is ventriloquilized and entextualized by transcribers, ghost writers, editors, and/or producers through language-labor practices. The chapter traces the recycling of the visual and sonic image of the queerqueen figure in contemporary popular culture from the 1950s. It proposes that, though processes of mass commodification, the trope of the (sometimes) cross-dressing (sometimes) cross-speaking queerqueen has been recycled in print, audiovisual, and digital media through recurring cultural “booms.” These “booms” position queerqueen speech as a new phenomenon and shape the commodification of it within the historical and cultural context that forms the background to Japanese popular cultural productions. This chapter outlines how one can trace the entextualization of “queer linguistic excess” and its containment through analysis of the (re)production of “actual” conversations by “authentic” queerqueens as written text.

In the nationalized Czechoslovak film industry, between 1952 and 1956, eight very rare three-column screenplays appeared. The historical evidence of this different screenplay format has been overlooked by historians up to now. Three-column screenplays are not just a dead end of screenwriting practice; they can also be read as evidence of basic tendencies within the Czechoslovak film industry in the 1950s. One effect of nationalization of the film industry was the attempt to standardize the organization of script development. The administrative intervention caused the modification of the script format, but instead of standardization, the effect was a multitude of formats, of which the three-column technical screenplays were a by-product. In this article I read these three-column screenplays within the industry context of the first half of the 1950s in Czechoslovakia and offer an in-depth analysis of particular three-column screenplays.1

Abstract Spinal cord (dorsal column) stimulation (SCS) and intraspinal opioids (ISO) are treatments for patients in whom abnormal illness behavior is absent but who have an objective basis for severe, persistent pain that has not been adequately relieved by other interventions. Usually, physicians prescribe these treatments in cancer pain or noncancer-related neuropathic pain settings. A survey of academic centers showed that 87% of responding centers use SCS and 84% use ISO. These treatments are performed frequently in nonacademic settings, so evaluators likely will encounter patients who were treated with SCS and ISO. Does SCS or ISO change the impairment associated with the underlying conditions for which these treatments are performed? Although the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (AMA Guides) does not specifically address this question, the answer follows directly from the principles on which the AMA Guides impairment rating methodology is based. Specifically, “the impairment percents shown in the chapters that consider the various organ systems make allowance for the pain that may accompany the impairing condition.” Thus, impairment is neither increased due to persistent pain nor is it decreased in the absence of pain. In summary, in the absence of complications, the evaluator should rate the underlying pathology or injury without making an adjustment in the impairment for SCS or ISO.
