In the present study, principal component analysis has been applied to agroclimatic variables for delineating India into homogeneous agroclimatic zones for kharif crops. The vaTiates chosen were soil moisture, water need of the crops, number of rainy days and radiation. Spatial variability of some of these factors has been discussed. Vector 1 and vector 2 were obtained for each of the three separate sets of the variates and plotted to obtain grid maps. Through a process of successive superimposition of these maps, agro-climatic zones have been obtained.

The principal component analysis is utilized to understand the spatial and temporal variability of monsoonal rainfall. The southwest monsoon rainfall data of West Bengal, situated over 21 stations widely spread over the state, has been analyzed for a period of 60 years for inter-annual variations. A coherent subset of 8 north and 13 south stations has been studied separately to produce statistically significant inter-annual signals. It is observed that the above/below transition is quite significant both for station rainfalls and principal components for state-wise and coherent zone analysis.

Biopreservatives have received considerable attention in recent years as natural alternatives to synthetic preservatives. This seems to be a response to an increased demand for natural and organic foods. This study investigates the potential market for products enriched with biopreservatives in Italy. Data were collected from a sample of Italian consumers (N = 479) using a web-based survey. The main results indicate that 64% of respondents declared themselves to be willing to consume biopreservatives only if they replaced synthetic preservatives. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to reduce the number of variables. The factorial scores of the components obtained from PCA were used for a Cluster Analysis related to consumers’ perceptions about biopreservatives. Moreover, the survey highlights that the respondents had positive opinions about biopreservatives, although they showed difficulty in perceiving the exact meaning of the term. The study could provide useful implications for food manufacturers and facilitate the design of marketing strategies for foods enriched with biopreservatives.
