A new Schiff base Co(II) complex and - peroxo complex were synthesized and characterized by thin layer chromatography (TLC), elemental analyses, magnetic moment, conductivity measurements, UV-Vis., IR and ESI-MS spectral studies. The cobalt ion was participated in direct complexation with the Schiff base (SB) ligand derived from o-aminobenzoic acid and cinnamaldehyde during the single pot reaction. IR spectral data showed that the Schiff base ligand coordinated to the metal ion through nitrogen of azomethine group and oxygen of carboxyl group (COO-). The molar conductance values indicated that both the complexes are non-electrolytic in nature. Antibacterial activity of the complexes was tested against four pathogenic bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli & Shigella dysenteriae with standard Kanamycin-30. The results showed that both type of complexes have moderate to strong antibacterial activity and the peroxo complex is relatively more potential towards all the tested organisms.

The result showed that Cd(II) complex exhibited more potential antibacterial activity than the Zr(IV) complex against all the tested pathogens.

Objective: This study aimed to demonstrate the incorporation of Zingiber officinale essential (ZOE) oil onto galactomannan from Arenga pinnata (GAP) matrix and determined the antibacterial activity of the edible films (EF).Methods: EF was obtained from the incorporation of GAP (0.5, 0.9, or 1.3 g) with ZOE (0.5 or 1 g) using glycerol (0.6 g) and monoglycerol oleic (0.2 g) as a plasticizer.Results: The thickness of the films increased with the increase of GAP and ZOE oil. However, the tensile strength and water permeability decreased in the fourth EF when the ZOE oil was increased. The maximum value of tensile strength and modulus elongation was obtained with the ratio of GAP to ZOE oil at 0.9, 0.5, 4.502 MPa, and 0.0633 MPa, respectively. The Fourier transform infrared spectrum showed that the interaction occurred between GAP and ZOE oil. The EFs showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae with the highest activity in the third EF. The total bacteria amount in a colony decreased until the 5th day compared with the control. Furthermore, the third EF could inhibit oxygen migration with a respiratory quotient of 7.71.Conclusions: This study revealed that EFs from GAP and ZOE could be prepared and have antibacterial activity against several pathogenic bacteria.

The monofunctional bidentate Schiff base ligand (o-vanillin)p-chloroaniline and its four new complexes of chromium(III), cobalt(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) have been synthesized by classical thermal and microwave-irradiated techniques. All the new derivatives have been characterized by elemental analysis, molecular weight determinations, molar conductance measurements, UV-Vis, IR and NMR spectral studies. The IR spectral data suggest the involvement of phenolic oxygen after deprotonation and azomethine nitrogen in coordination to the central metal ion. The growth inhibiting potential of the ligands and complexes has been assessed against a variety of fungal and bacterial strains.

A series of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized from the schiff base ligand L. The schiff base ligand [(4-oxo-4H-chromen-3-yl) methylene] benzohydrazide (L) has been synthesized by the reaction between chromone-3-carbaldehyde and benzoyl hydrazine. The nature of bonding and geometry of the transition metal complexes as well as schiff base ligand L have been deduced from elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-Vis,1HNMR, ESR spectral studies, mass, thermal (TGA and DTA) analysis, magnetic susceptibility, and molar conductance measurements. Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), and Mn(II) metal ions are forming 1:2 (M:L) complexes, Zn(II) is forming 1:1 (M:L) complex. Based on elemental, conductance and spectral studies, six-coordinated geometry was assigned for Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Zn(II) complexes. The complexes are 1:2 electrolytes in DMSO except zinc complex, which is neutral in DMSO. The ligand L acts as tridentate and coordinates through nitrogen atom of azomethine group, oxygen atom of keto group ofγ-pyrone ring and oxygen atom of hydrazoic group of benzoyl hydrazine. The 3D molecular modeling and energies of all the compounds are furnished. The biological activity of the ligand and its complexes have been studied on the four bacteriaE. coli, Edwardella, Pseudomonas, andB. subtilisand two fungipencilliumandtricodermaby well disc and fusion method and found that the metal chelates are more active than the free schiff base ligand.

A novel series of trivalent coordination complexes was synthesized by the reaction between a chloride/ acetate salt of iron, chromium, cobalt or manganese ions and NNNNOO type persuasive Schiff base ligand synthesized from 2,3-dioxobutane, ethane-1,2-diamine and 4-chloro-2-formylphenol. Synthesized compounds were characterized by using elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic moment, IR, UV-visible, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and ESI-MS spectral analyses. IR and NMR spectra favoured hexadentate coordination behaviour of ligand. Electronic spectra and magnetic moment data reveal Oh geometry with distortion around the metal ion in complexes. The molar conductance values show 1:1 electrolytic nature of complexes. Biological potentiality of the ligand and its metal complexes were tested in vitro against two bacterial and two fungal strains; Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Aspirgillus niger, Aspirgillus flavus, respectively.

Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) complexes of (4E)-4-[(2-{(E)-[1-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethylidene]amino}ethyl)imino]pentan-2-one have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance, electronic and IR spectral studies, and XRD. FTIR confirmed the ligand coordinates the metal ion to form mononuclear complex via the oxygen and nitrogen atoms of the phenolic group and azomethine group, respectively. Tetrahedral geometry is proposed for Co(II) complex and square-planar geometry for Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The antibacterial studies of the compounds were determined and they show that the metal complexes are more active than the free ligands. The antioxidant activity by DPPH and ABTS method was examined and it shows Cu(II); IC50= 2.31 ± 1.54 µM for DPPH and Co(II); IC50= 1.83 ± 1.08 µM for ABTS were the most active.

Some coordination complexes of Co(??), Ni(??), Cu(??), Cd(??) and Hg(??) are reacted in ethanol with Schiff base ligand derived from of 2,4,6- trihydroxybenzophenone and 3-aminophenol using microwave irradiation and then reacted with metal salts in ethanol as a solvent in 1:2 ratio (metal: ligand). The ligand [H4L] is characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis, C.H.N, 1H-NMR,13C-NMR, and mass spectra. The metal complexes are characterized by atomic absorption, infrared spectra, electronic spectra, molar conductance, (C.H.N for Ni(??) complex) and magnetic moment measurements. These measurements indicate that the ligand coordinates with metal (??) ion in a tridentate manner through the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the ligand, octahedral structures are suggested for these complexes. Antibacterial activity of the ligand [H4L] and its complexes are studied against (gram positive) and (gram negative) bacteria [Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus]. The proposed structure of the complexes using the program, Chem office (2006) and the general formula has been given for the prepared ligand complexes K2[M(H2L)2].

The Schiff base was synthesized by condensation of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde with 3- aminobenzoic acid in 1:1 molar ratio. The Schiff base ligand formed complexes with Co (II), Ni (II), Cu (II) and Zn (II) acetate via mechanochemical synthesis. The synthesized compounds were characterized by solubility test, thermal analysis, FT-IR, powder x-ray diffraction, molar conductance measurement, magnetic susceptibility and elemental analysis. The Schiff base has a melting point of 190 oC. The decomposition temperature of complexes was found to be in the range 289 – 302 oC. The Schiff base and its metal (II) complexes were soluble in DMF, DMSO and sparingly soluble in acetonitrile, chloroform, diethyl ether and insoluble in n-hexane which indicate the polar nature of the synthesized compounds. The IR spectral analysis of the free Schiff base shows a band at 1622 cm-1, assigned to v(C=N) stretching vibrations. This band was shifted in the spectra of complexes (1607 – 1633 cm-1), indicating coordination of the Schiff base to the metal ion through the azomethine group. The molar conductance of complexes determined are in the range 9.51 – 14.87 Ohm-1cm2mol-1 which indicate the non-electrolytic nature in DMF. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of Co (II), Ni (II) and Cu (II) complexes exhibit a magnetic moment in the range 1.25 – 3.08 BM. The values correspond to square-planar geometry. The magnetic moment value of Zn (II) complex indicates a diamagnetic behaviour. The elemental analysis of the complexes for C, H and N determined showed that the observed and the calculated percentages of the elements are in good agreement.

Cellulose and chitosan are natural polymers that have been used as biocomposite. The aim of this research is to obtain biofilms from chitosan and oxidized cellulose crosslinks. This research is divided into three steps, i.e., isolation of cellulose from oil palm trunk and oxidation of cellulose using NaIO4 (0.2; 0.4; 0.6; 0.8; 1.0 mg/mL) to obtain dialdehyde cellulose (DAC), crosslink of oxidized cellulose with chitosan (DD = 72.85%) to obtain biofilm of chitosan/DAC (CDAC), and characterization of biofilms. The crosslinked reaction was confirmed by FT-IR analysis that showed the spectrum of Schiff base C=N group at 1651 cm–1. Tensile strength increased gradually when the NaIO4 concentration used was 0.2–0.6 mg/mL, but after those concentrations, the tensile strength slightly decreased. The morphology analysis showed that CDAC had smoother morphology than DAC, which was shown rough and showed some particle indicated the presence of unreacted cellulose. CDAC biofilms that prepared with 1.0 mg/mL NaIO4 showed the greatest antibacterial activity.
