In the consideration of problems of coastal engineering in general, and of shore and beach erosion in particular, one is quite naturally apt to immediately focus attention upon our ocean shores to the exclusion of inland areas. Many are perhaps not appreciative of the fact that the five inland fresh-water lakes comprising the Great Lakes system are bordered by eight states having a combined length of shore line of approximately 3,000 miles. (See Fig. 1) Only in recent years has there been a general awakening of interest in the many and varied problems of erosion which occur along these inland coasts. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the problems existing on the Illinois shore and to outline the steps which have been taken at the State level in seeking a solution to those problems.

The paper is dedicated to the estimation of the state of the road economy of Voronezh up to date. The state of the Voronezh road system is analysed, statistical data are given, and the problems of the city transport system are studied. On the basis of all the data obtained, ways to solve existing problems are proposed and long-range programs for the construction of new and reconstruction in operation roads are considered. The complex of works of the improvement state of the road system planned for the near future is described in detail.

AbstractIn 1966 and 1967, amateurs unearthed a number of split-twig figurines in Stanton Cave in the Grand Canyon’s Marble Gorge. A number of these figurines are described, including one which is perhaps the finest ever discovered. It is documented that these finds by amateurs were stimulated by publication about this site in popular periodicals. It is also argued, using the Grand Canyon as an example, that survey and salvage in connection with large dam construction is never a substitute for long-range study of the archaeology and its environmental context, and that salvage cannot be considered as a benefit justifying dam construction but only as an alleviation of some of the dam damage.

The paper contains modern understanding of gravity-dependent changes in human body systems that occur during space flight and of modern problems, the solution of which will bring humanity closer to ensuring medical safety in interplanetary missions. Particular consideration is given to the state of the systems limiting physical performance, which is a factor that largely determines the success of planetary activities in ultra-long-range space flights. Hypogravitational disturbances countermeasures used on the ISS are described, with emphasis on some features that are specific to the ISS partners. Prospects for development of countermeasures for hypogravitational disorders in interplanetary missions are considered.
