ABSTRACTGarlic is an herb which has been used by many cultures for treating various health problems for centuries. Uncontrolled use of herbal remedies, known as alternative treatment methods, may lead to side effects and serious treatment complications. This study aimed to draw attention to complications related to alternative treatment methods and to review the literature in the light of this case.A female patient who had been treated for trigeminal neuralgia was admitted to our clinic complaining of severe pain on the left side of her face. In anamnesis, the patient reported that she had applied garlic topically to this region. Extraoral examination revealed a broad cutaneous burn on the same region. According to a dermatology consultation, a treatment for cutaneous burns was applied and severe trigeminal neuralgia pain was eliminated with glycerol injection by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Although anticoccidial-resistant Eimeria spp. have been reported in avian industry, it has yet to be officially identified in dairy goats in Taiwan. This paper describes Eimeria strains, identified from a five-week-old kid, found to be resistant to sulfonamide drugs, due to the fact that the number of oocysts per gram of feces (O.P.G.) remained to be 9200 after seven consecutive days of treatment and only dropped to zero after another two consecutive days of treatment with toltrazuril. We believe this is the first paper to identify the emergence of an anticoccidial-resistant Eimeria spp. strain, and further investigation should be warranted. This paper would help farmers and veterinarians consider an alternative treatment protocol when dealing with coccidiosis in the goat industry.

Neurological complications of infective endocarditis are frequent, especially ischaemic strokes. As intravenous thrombolysis in infective endocarditis-related ischaemic stroke has a controversial benefit/risk ratio, alternative treatment regimens have to be considered. We present the case of a young patient with septic embolism of the middle cerebral artery who was successfully treated with mechanical thrombectomy, and give a short review of the existing literature.

Objective: Oral ulcers are painful sores that appear in the mouth. Most of them are usually harmless and clear up on their own. Sometimes, they are non-responsive and difficult to manage. This report describes the case of an 80-year-old female patient with chronic oral ulcers of three years duration and which were refractory to conventional therapy. The ulcers were subsequently treated using 3% citric acid as a sole topical agent, applied three times a day that resulted in complete healing of oral ulcers by day 10 of treatment. The findings of this case report suggest that topical citric acid is a possible alternative treatment for chronic oral ulcers unresponsive to conventional treatment.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a rare cause of stroke, which is routinely treated with systemic heparin. Unfavourable outcome is often seen in severe cases. Therefore alternative treatment methods should be explored in these patients. Due to the risk of haemorrhagic complications, treatment without administration of thrombolytics is of particular interest. This report presents a case of successful mechanical thrombectomy, without the use of thrombolytics, in a comatose patient with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.
