Phosphogypsum (PG) and titanium gypsum (TG), as a by-product (solid waste) in phosphate fertilizer and titanium dioxide industry, are causing serious environmental hazards. The resource/harmless application of PG and TG is the development trend in the future. The biological function of red yeast (Rho: Rhodotorula mucilaginosa) can effectively reduce the concentration of pollutants in the environment and has the potential of biological flotation/purification of mineral solid waste. In this study, the bioremediation mechanism and safe utilization efficiency of Rho for different contents of PG and TG were explored by using its biological flotation function. The X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) results showed that F was the main toxic element in PG and TG, and Pb and Cd did not reach the detection limit. The processing capacity of Rho for PG (>10 g/ml) is higher than that of TG (<5 g/ml). After bioleaching by Rho, the proportion of F in PG and TG solid decreased by 61.45–63.79% and 49.45–59.19%, respectively. The results of three-dimensional fluorescence, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) extraction, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that Rho could accelerate the release of harmful elements (F) in PG and TG. SEM showed that Rho cells and secretions adhered and wrapped on PG/TG, causing PG/TG decomposition and fragmentation. In addition, the adsorption of EPS and the formation of Ca5(PO4)3F are two main ways for Rho to remove F. Furthermore, under the condition of high concentration bioleaching, Rho can accelerate the release and utilization of P in PG, which is not only for the re-precipitation of Ca5(PO4)3F but also conducive to the reproduction and utilization of microorganisms. Meanwhile, the purification/safe reuse of PG by Rho is easier than that of TG. Therefore, the toxicity of PG and TG bioleaching by Rho can be greatly reduced, suggesting the huge potential of Rho in soil improvement and remediation.

(1) Background: Diet and statins are commonly used to treat high cholesterol (CHOL) levels. (2) Aim: To compare adherence to Mediterranean diet (Med-D), orthorexia nervosa (ON), and musculoskeletal pain in individuals in treatment with statins metabolized by CYP3A4, not metabolized by CYP3A4 or red yeast rice (RYR, containing monacolin K: MON-K). (3) Methods: starting from 80 individuals, after the exclusion of those with other causes of possible pain, 56 individuals were selected and divided into three groups according to the type of statin (CYP3A4, NO-CYP3A4 and MON-K). Adherence to the Med-D was evaluated with the MEDScore and a sub-score was calculated for fruit and vegetables consumption (MEDScore-FV). ON and musculoskeletal pain were assessed with the ORTO-15 and with the Nordic Musculoskeletal questionnaires, respectively. A retrospective analysis of CHOL decrease after treatment was conducted. (4) Results: CHOL levels were lower in CYP3A4 and NO-CYP3A4 after treatment (182.4 ± 6.3 and 177.0 ± 7.8 mg/dL, respectively), compared with MON-K (204.2 ± 7.1 mg/dL, p < 0.05). MON-K and CYP3A4 groups had a high prevalence of reported knee pain (33.3% and 18.8%, respectively) than NO-CYP3A4 group (0%, p < 0.05). A high percentage of individuals in MON-K take supplements and nutraceuticals (87.5%), whereas MEDScore-FV was higher in CYP3A4 (9.4 ± 0.2) compared to NO-CYP3A4 (7.6 ± 0.5, p < 0.05). (5) Conclusions: This study suggests that individuals receiving treatment with statins and RYR should be monitored from the perspective of plant foods’ consumption and nutraceutical use, to prevent musculoskeletal pain.

Abstract Background: Dyslipidemia is major risk factor of non-communicable disease and nutraceutical like red yeast rice (RYR) may be helpful as alternative to lowering lipid profile in dyslipidemia. Research objectives: This literature is to critically analyze the comparison RYR and simvastatin in lowering lipid profile. Methods: A search for relevant literatures in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and Science Direct was conducted. We assessing the relevancy and eligibility of the literatures. Three literatures were selected and critically appraised. Results: There were no significant different between RYR and statin group for triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), especially the total cholesterol (TC)  and the low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) level. Red yeast rice (RYR) show less fatigue side effect than statin. Conclusions: Nutraceutical like RYR can be an alternative to lowering lipid profile especially TC level and LDL-C level and solution for patients who experience statin-associated myalgia. Red yeast rice is a traditional Chinese medicine and food that has been purported to color food, ferment, and lower cholesterol. In order to study the antioxidative capacity of red yeast rice and the effects on electrical potential difference (EPD) of 12 acupuncture meridians, the pH value, oxidation reduction potential (ORP), ABTS, FRAP, T-SOD, and particle size distribution of red yeast rice were analyzed. 20 volunteers were recruited and randomly divided into two groups, the red yeast rice group (10 g red yeast rice and 40 g water) and control CK group (50 g water). The left 12 acupuncture meridians’ EPD was real-time monitored. Samples were taken at the 10th minutes. The whole procedure continued for 70 minutes. It is shown that the pH value of the red yeast rice was 4.22, the ORP was 359.63 mV, the ABTS was 0.48 mmol Trolox, the FRAP was 0.08 mmol FeSO4, the T-SOD was 4.71 U, and the average particle size was 108 nm (7.1%) and 398.1 nm (92.9%). The results of 12 acupuncture meridians’ EPD showed that the red yeast rice can significantly affect the EPD of stomach, heart, small intestine, and liver meridians.

Propionibacterium acnes ATCC 11827 and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC BAA-1683 are bacteria that cause skin infections, namely acne vulgaris and skin and soft tissue infection/SSTI. The increase in the number of resistant bacterial strains, such as MRSA,  requires the search for alternative antibiotics, including using natural ingredients. Red yeast rice is a product of rice fermentation by Monascus purpureus, which is known to have antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cholesterol and immunomodulator. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of several red yeast rice extracts against these bacteria that cause skin infections. The research was carried out through the stages of collecting materials and identifying the yeast isolates, extracting of red yeast rice, phytochemical screening of red yeast rice extract, confirmation of bacterial test, preparation of bacterial test suspension, testing for bacterial resistance, testing for antibacterial activity of red yeast rice extract and determining the value of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the most active extract. The results showed that the ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts had antibacterial activity against P. acnes ATCC 11827 and MRSA ATCC BAA-1683. Both extracts contain compounds from the polyphenols, flavonoids, quinones and saponins group. Ethyl acetate extract was the most active extract with MIC values against P. acnes ATCC 1182 and MRSA ATCC BAA-1683 of 50 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/mL. The MBC values of ethyl acetate extract against these bacterial tests were 100 mg/mL and 25 mg/mL. The ethyl acetate extract is more active against MRSA ATCC BAA-1683 than against P. acnes ATCC 11827. From the results of this study it is known that red yeast rice has activity against bacteria that cause skin infections, especially against MRSA

Background: Xuezhikang, an extract of red yeast rice, effectively lowers fasting blood lipid levels. However, the influence of Xuezhikang on the non-fasting levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) has not been explored in Chinese patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).Methods: Fifty CHD patients were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups (n = 25 each) to receive 1,200 mg/d of Xuezhikang or a placebo for 6 weeks as routine therapy. Blood lipids were repeatedly measured before and after 6 weeks of treatment at 0, 2, 4, and 6 h after a standard breakfast containing 800 kcal and 50 g of fat.Results: The serum LDL-C levels significantly decreased, from a fasting level of 3.88 mmol/L to non-fasting levels of 2.99, 2.83, and 3.23 mmol/L at 2, 4, and 6 h, respectively, after breakfast (P &lt; 0.05). The serum non-HDL-C level mildly increased from a fasting level of 4.29 mmol/L to non-fasting levels of 4.32, 4.38, and 4.34 mmol/L at 2, 4, and 6 h post-prandially, respectively, and the difference reached statistical significance only at 4 and 6 h after breakfast (P &lt; 0.05). After 6 weeks of Xuezhikang treatment, the patients had significantly lower fasting and non-fasting serum levels of LDL-C and non-HDL-C (P &lt; 0.05) than at pretreatment. The LDL-C levels were reduced by 27.8, 28.1, 26.2, and 25.3% at 0, 2, 4, and 6 h, respectively, and the non-HDL-C levels were reduced by 27.6, 28.7, 29.0, and 28.0% at 0, 2, 4, and 6 h, respectively, after breakfast. No significant difference was found in the percent reductions in the LDL-C and non-HDL-C levels among the four different time-points.Conclusions: Six weeks of Xuezhikang treatment significantly decreased LDL-C and non-HDL-C levels, with similar percent reductions in fasting and non-fasting states in CHD patients, indicating that the percent change in non-fasting LDL-C or non-HDL-C could replace that in the fasting state for evaluation the efficacy of cholesterol control in CHD patients who are unwilling or unable to fast.
