Domestic and industrial wastewater discharges harbor rich bacterial communities, including both pathogenic and commensal organisms that are antibiotic-resistant (AR). AR pathogens pose a potential threat to human and animal health. In wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), bacteria encounter environments suitable for horizontal gene transfer, providing an opportunity for bacterial cells to acquire new antibiotic-resistant genes. With many entry points to environmental components, especially water and soil, WWTPs are considered a critical control point for antibiotic resistance. The primary and secondary units of conventional WWTPs are not designed for the reduction of resistant microbes. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are viable wastewater treatment options with the potential for mitigating AR bacteria, their genes, pathogens, and general pollutants. Encouraging performance for the removal of AR (2–4 logs) has highlighted the applicability of CW on fields. Their low cost of construction, operation and maintenance makes them well suited for applications across the globe, especially in developing and low-income countries. The present review highlights a better understanding of the performance efficiency of conventional treatment plants and CWs for the elimination/reduction of AR from wastewater. They are viable alternatives that can be used for secondary/tertiary treatment or effluent polishing in combination with WWTP or in a decentralized manner.

Background: Minimally invasive surgery for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has been evaluated in clinical trials. Although meta-analyses on this topic have been performed in the past, recent trials have added important information to the results of the comparison. However, little work has been done to compare the effect of MIS and conventional treatment on patient prognosis, especially mortality.Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Ovid, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched on May 1, 2021, for randomized controlled trials of MIS for spontaneous ICH. The primary outcome was defined as death at follow-up, while the secondary outcome was defined as death in different comparisons between MIS and craniotomy (CT) or medication (Me).Results: The initial search yielded 12 high-quality randomized controlled trials involving 2,100 patients. We analyzed the odds ratios (ORs) for MIS compared with conventional treatment, including Me and conventional CT. The OR and confidence intervals (CIs) of the primary and secondary outcomes were 0.62 (0.45–0.85) for MIS vs. conventional treatment. We also conducted subgroup analyses and found that the ORs and CIs for MIS compared with that of conventional treatment in the short-term follow-up were 0.58 (0.42–0.80), and, in the long-term follow-up, was 0.67 (0.46–0.98); and found that ORs were 0.68 (0.48–0.98) for MIS vs. CT and 0.57 (0.41–0.79) for MIS vs. Me.Conclusions: This meta-analysis demonstrates that certain patients with ICH benefit in short- and long-term follow-up from MIS over other treatments, including open surgery and conventional Me.Systematic Review Registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/.

The incidence and prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) are increasing worldwide, and the resulting cardiac complications are the leading cause of death. Among these complications is diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy (DCM), which is the consequence of a pro-inflammatory condition, oxidative stress and fibrosis caused by hyperglycemia. Cardiac remodeling will lead to an imbalance in cell survival and death, which can promote cardiac dysfunction. Since the conventional treatment of DM generally does not address the prevention of cardiac remodeling, it is important to develop new alternatives for the treatment of cardiovascular complications induced by DM. Thus, therapy with mesenchymal stem cells has been shown to be a promising approach for the prevention of DCM because of their anti-apoptotic, anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory effects, which could improve cardiac function in patients with DM.

Seizures after liver transplantation were previously thought to be a reliable harbinger of catastrophe, but more recent studies have found seizure activity to be relatively common, and most cases do not result in a poor outcome. Generalized seizures are the most common, and they typically occur de novo within the first two weeks after transplantation. The underlying cause for seizure activity in these patients may be complex, with potential etiologies including metabolic, infectious, cerebrovascular, and medication-induced causes. Identification of the underlying cause and the use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is crucial for minimizing risk to the patient’s neurologic and overall health. In this report, we present the case of a patient with refractory seizures unresponsive to conventional treatment, requiring prolonged barbiturate burst suppression with ventilator support. Seizure activity eventually ceased, and the patient made a full recovery.

Objective. To explore the effect of autoimmune cell therapy on immune cells in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to provide a reference for clinical treatment of COPD. Methods. Sixty patients with stable COPD were randomly divided into control group and treatment group ( n = 30 ). The control group was given conventional treatment, and the treatment group was given one autoimmune cell therapy on the basis of conventional treatment. The serum levels of CD3+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ cells, B cells, and NK cells in the peripheral blood were detected by flow cytometry. Possible adverse reactions were detected at any time during treatment. Results. There were no significant differences in the contents of CD3+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ cells, B cells, and NK cells in the serum of the control group ( P > 0.05 ). Compared with before treatment, the contents of CD3+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ cells, B cells, and NK cells in the serum of the treatment group were significantly increased ( P < 0.05 ). The ratio of CD 4 + / CD 8 + T cells in both control and treatment groups did not change significantly during treatment ( P > 0.05 ). There were no significant differences in serum CD3+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ cells, B cells, and NK cells in the treatment group at 30 days and 90 days after treatment ( P > 0.05 ), but they were significantly higher than those in the control group ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion. Autoimmune cell therapy can significantly increase the level of immune cells in the body and can be maintained for a long period of time, which has certain clinical benefits for recurrent respiratory tract infections and acute exacerbation in patients with COPD.

Background: To investigate the efficacy and safety of interventions for early stage pericoronitis. Methods: We searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in databases from inception to July 2020, without language restriction. RCTs assessing adolescents and adults were included. Results: Seven RCT with clinical diversity were included, so, it was not possible to conduct meta-analyses. Individual study data showed an improvement in oral health quality of life in favor of topical benzydamine versus diclofenac capsule (Mean difference (MD) −1.10, 95% Confidence interval (CI) −1.85 to −0.35), and no difference between topical benzydamine and flurbiprofen capsule (MD −0.55 95% CI −1.18 to 0.0). There was no difference between diclofenac and flurbiprofen capsules (MD 0.55, 95% CI −0.29 to 1.39). An imprecise estimate of effects was found for all outcomes, considering (i) oral versus topic pharmacological treatment, (ii) different oral pharmacological treatments, (iii) pharmacological treatment associated with laser versus placebo laser, (iv) pharmacological treatment associated with different mouthwashes, and (v) conventional treatment associated to antimicrobial photodynamic therapy versus conventional treatment, with low to very low certainty of evidence. Conclusions: Until future well-designed studies can be conducted, the clinical decision for early stage pericoronitis should be guided by individual characteristics, settings and financial aspects.

Conventional treatment processes are not effective in removing micropollutants such as antibiotics and other drugs present in wastewater, and degradation methods based on advanced oxidative processes become attractive. Herein, it was synthesized Fe3-xO4-y-TiO2 particles by coprecipitation method and they were heat-treated at 100, 400, and 800 �C. The obtained solids were characterized by X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis and analytical determinations were performed using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry. The particles were evaluated in photoperoxidation processes on the degradation of the ciprofloxacin antimicrobial in an aqueous solution. The studies took place at pH 9; with an H2O2 concentration of 31 mg L�1 and particle mass 0.22 g L�1 previously defined and, in these conditions, degradation percentages between 40 and 85% were observed, with the removal in the Photo/H2O2/Fe3-xO4-y-TiO2 800 �C. The kinetic study performed for this process revealed the process adjusts to the first-order kinetics during the 120 min of reaction. The use of the catalyst can be attractive with the potential for degradation of the studied antimicrobial.

Phytochemicals have been attributed beneficial health properties, mainly their anticancer potential. Cancer treatment seeks to shrink the tumor and kill cancer cells; however, the conventional treatment available frequently fails due to the emergence of drug-resistant cell lines. Plant-derived compounds have been studied for their potential anticancer effects or as adjuvant drug to conventional treatment. However, some of the physicochemical properties and stability characteristics of the phytocompounds generate biopharmaceuticals difficulties that limit their efficacy and clinical applications in oncology. In this sense, nanomedicine offers an alternative for the development of biocompatible, biodegradable, safe, and efficacy phytoformulations. Nanostructured delivery systems show immense potential in the bioavailability of phytodrugs by providing better alternatives to conventional dosage forms, through improving physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties of the phytocompounds and along with it to enhance the therapeutic efficacy.
