In this paper we define the notion of Brauer–Clifford group for [Formula: see text]-Azumaya algebras when [Formula: see text] is a commutative algebra and[Formula: see text] is a [Formula: see text]-Lie algebra over a commutative ring [Formula: see text]. This is the situation that arises in applications having connections to differential geometry. This Brauer–Clifford group turns out to be an example of a Brauer group of a symmetric monoidal category.

Abstract In this article, we study the obstructions to the local-global principle for homogeneous spaces with connected or abelian stabilizers over finite extensions of the field ℂ ⁢ ( ( x , y ) ) {\mathbb{C}((x,y))} of Laurent series in two variables over the complex numbers and over function fields of curves over ℂ ⁢ ( ( t ) ) {\mathbb{C}((t))} . We give examples that prove that the Brauer–Manin obstruction with respect to the whole Brauer group is not enough to explain the failure of the local-global principle, and we then construct a variant of this obstruction using torsors under quasi-trivial tori which turns out to work. In the end of the article, we compare this new obstruction to the descent obstruction with respect to torsors under tori. For that purpose, we use a result on towers of torsors, that is of independent interest and therefore is proved in a separate appendix.

Abstract Using the theory of cohomological invariants for algebraic stacks, we compute the Brauer group of the moduli stack of hyperelliptic curves ${\mathcal {H}}_g$ over any field of characteristic $0$ . In positive characteristic, we compute the part of the Brauer group whose order is prime to the characteristic of the base field.

Let [Formula: see text] be a global field and let [Formula: see text] be a finite set of primes of [Formula: see text] containing the Archimedean primes. We generalize the duality theorem for the Néron [Formula: see text]-class group of an abelian variety [Formula: see text] over [Formula: see text] established previously by removing the requirement that the Tate–Shafarevich group of [Formula: see text] be finite. We also derive an exact sequence that relates the indicated group associated to the Jacobian variety of a proper, smooth and geometrically connected curve [Formula: see text] over [Formula: see text] to a certain finite subquotient of the Brauer group of [Formula: see text].

We prove a 1966 conjecture of Tate concerning the Artin–Tate pairing on the Brauer group of a surface over a finite field, which is the analog of the Cassels–Tate pairing. Tate asked if this pairing is always alternating and we find an affirmative answer, which is somewhat surprising in view of the work of Poonen–Stoll on the Cassels–Tate pairing. Our method is based on studying a connection between the Artin–Tate pairing and (generalizations of) Steenrod operations in étale cohomology. Inspired by an analogy to the algebraic topology of manifolds, we develop tools allowing us to calculate the relevant étale Steenrod operations in terms of characteristic classes.
