Although the higher order mechanisms behind object representation and classification in the visual system are still not well understood, there are hints that simple shape primitives such as “curviness” might activate neural activation and guide this process. Drawing on elementary invariance principles, we propose that a statistical geometric object, the probability distribution of the normalized contour curvatures (NCC) in the intensity field of a planar image, has the potential to represent and classify categories of objects. We show that NCC is sufficient for discriminating between cognitive categories such as animacy, size and type, and demonstrate the robustness of this metric to variation in illumination and viewpoint, consistent with neurobiological constraints and psychological experiments. A generative model for producing artificial images with the observed NCC distributions highlights the key features that our metric captures and just as importantly, those that it does not. More broadly, our study points to the need for statistical geometric approaches to cognition that build in both the statistics and the natural invariances of the sensory world.

Abstract99mTc-macroaggregated albumin (MAA) imaging is performed before transarterial radioembolization (TARE), in which SPECT/CT is presumed more precise than planar image. However, additive role of SPECT/CT has not been well established. Thirty-four consecutive hepatocellular carcinoma patients of intermediate and advanced stages who underwent 90Y-microsphere TARE were recruited. On pre-treatment planning scan using 99mTc-MAA, image characteristics and absorbed dose for target tumors calculated by partition model methods were estimated on planar image and SPECT/CT, respectively. The measurements were repeated on post-treatment 90Y PET/CT, as the reference standard. Treatment response was assessed and predictive values of image parameters were analyzed. The image characteristics including heterogeneity, necrosis and thrombosis uptake were better delineated on SPECT/CT than planar scan. The agreement and correlation of TNr between SPECT/CT and PET/CT were stronger than those between planar scan and PET/CT. Tumor dose estimated on 99mTc-MAA SPECT/CT was more effective than planar image for prediction of treatment response, with cutoff value 125 Gy (sensitivity of 86% and specificity of 75%). In conclusion, 99mTc-MAA SPECT/CT is more closely correlated with post-treatment 90Y PET/CT, and is more effective for predicting treatment response than planar scan. SPECT/CT is superior to planar image in simulation before 90Y TARE.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to demonstrate the usefulness of SwiftScan with a low-energy high-resolution and sensitivity (LEHRS) collimator for bone scintigraphy using a novel bone phantom simulating the human body. SwiftScan planar image of lateral view was acquired in clinical condition; thereafter, each planar image of different blend ratio (0–80%) of Crality 2D processing were created. SwiftScan planar images with reduced acquisition time by 25–75% were created by Poisson’s resampling processing. SwiftScan single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was acquired with step-and-shoot and continuous mode, and SPECT images were reconstructed using a three-dimensional ordered subset expectation maximization incorporating attenuation, scatter and spatial resolution corrections. SwiftScan planar image showed a high contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and low percent of the coefficient of variance (%CV) compared with conventional planar image. The CNR of the tumor parts in SwiftScan SPECT was higher than that of the conventional SPECT image of step and shoot acquisition, while the %CV showed the lowest value in all systems. In conclusion, SwiftScan planar and SPECT images were able to reduce the image noise compared with planar and SPECT image with a low-energy high-resolution collimator, so that SwiftScan planar and SPECT images could be obtained a high CNR. Furthermore, the SwiftScan planar image was able to reduce the acquisition time by 25% when the blend ratio of Clarity 2D processing set to more than 40%.

Abstract Background: Automatic Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) based image matching for set-up verification is recommended as compared to 2-D match for post-operative local / loco-regional radiotherapy of breast cancer patients by Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) technique. However, in supine position, off-midline peripheral body Clinical Target Volume (CTV) of unilateral breast cancer patients immobilized on Breast and Lung board of All-in-One (AIO) positioning systemmay necessitate augmented movement of couch in ‘x’ and ‘z’ axis thereby raising the risk of collusion of x-ray sources / detectors system with couch. Methods and Materials: VMAT was planned by a pair of partial arc for whole target volume for seven consecutive post-operative breast cancer patients (five post-mastectomy and two post-breast conservation patients). Tattoo based set-up by shift of treatment table in x-, y- and z-axis as determined by Treatment Planning System followed by X-rays with planar image acquisition and online 2-D imaging matching was performed for set-up verification. In-room 360°rotation of x-ray source and detector system of linear accelerator (linac) was performed before x-ray planar image acquisition. Results: Completion of 360°rotation in-room of x-ray source and detector system of linacaround the machine iso-centre was not possible in six out of seven patients due to possibility of collusion of gantry with contralateral side of the couch. Conclusion: Performing CBCT for generating 3D images for computed tomography (CT) reconstruction may not be practical for patient set-up verification of post-operative radiotherapy of unilateral breast cancer patients positioned supine on breast and lung board.
