Research methodology The case was written based on personal interviews with Jordan Boyes. Case overview/synopsis Boyes Group, a private real estate brokerage in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, had been growing rapidly. Company founder Jordan Boyes needed to determine where to continue expanding. Saskatoon held great potential in home building, and he wondered if this would be a direction for his company. His real estate reputation was excellent, but he wondered if building homes would jeopardize his current relationships with local builders. He wanted to move fast, to avoid giving up market share to his competitors. Complexity academic level This case was designed for undergraduate and graduate classes in strategy.

Purpose This paper aims to suggest a practical model for the production of new homes according to demands. After understanding the inhabitants’ priorities and preferences, the authors will present a programming model for building projects. The authors will meet the goal with knowledge-based development ideas and the experiences of skilled engineers and scholars. Design/methodology/approach The research methods are theoretical studies, a case study strategy, a market analysis, linear planning and classic procedures. All the research methods are problem-oriented. The authors have studied theories related to housing policies and performed field studies with a case study. The case study considers the preferences of applicants and programs building productions according to the ideas and needs. Findings The outcome of this research is a home-building program. The program stands on the particular requirements of responded people and regional characteristics. The authors can simulate this model anywhere in the world where there is a housing crisis. Originality/value This paper is originally based on my studies and practices.

Conventional wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in smart home-building (SHB) are typically driven by batteries, limiting their lifespan and the maximum number of deployable units. To satisfy the energy demand for the next generation of SHB which can interconnect WSNs to make the internet of smart home-building (IoSHB), this study introduces the design and implementation of a 250 mW to 2.3 W energy harvesting device. The proposed device is dynamically autonomous owing to the integration of embedded solar photovoltaic (PV) modules and power storage through a supercapacitor (SC; 5 V, 0.47 F) capable of powering WSNs for 95 s (up to 4.11 V). The deployed device can harvest indoor and outdoor ambient light at a minimum illumination of 50 lux and a maximum illumination of 200 lux. Moreover, the proposed system supports wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to do data transfer to a webserver as a complete internet of things (IoT) device. A customized android dashboard is further developed for data monitoring on a smartphone. All in all, this self-powered WSN node can interface with the users of the SHBs for displaying ambient data, which demonstrates its promising applicability and stability.

AbstractWith the advent of 5G technology, the enhanced Mobile Broadband technology is translating 5G-based Internet of Things (IoT) such as smart home/building into reality. With such advances, security must mitigate greater risks associated with faster and more accessible technology. The 5G-based IoT security analysis is crucial to IoT Technology, which will eventually expand extensively into massive machine-type communications and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications. This paper analyses the countermeasures and verification methods of eavesdropping vulnerabilities within IoT devices that use the current 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) network system. The network hierarchical structure of 5G-based IoT was evaluated for vulnerability analysis, performed separately for 5G Access Stratum (AS), Non-Access Stratum (NAS), and Internet Protocol (IP) Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). AS keystream reuse, NAS null-ciphering, and IMS IPsec off vulnerabilities were tested on mobile carrier networks to validate it on the 5G NSA network as well. A countermeasure against each vulnerability was presented, and our Intrusion Detection System based on these countermeasures successfully detected the presented controlled attacks.
