1AbstractSexual reproduction is almost universal in the animal kingdom; therefore, each species must have a mechanism for designating sex as male or female. Fish especially have a wide range of sex determining systems. While incompatible systems are thought to increase reproductive isolation, interspecific hybridization is common among groups such as cyprinid minnows, thus, studies such as this can provide insight into hybridization and evolutionary diversification of this clade. In the present study, we aimed to identify a genetic basis for sex determination in the common creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) data. No sex-associated markers were found by RADSex or a GWAS using GEMMA, however, our Weir and Cockerham locus-specific FST analysis and discriminant analysis of principal components revealed some genetic differentiation between the sexes at several loci. While no explicit sex determination mechanism has been yet discovered in creek chub, these loci are potential candidates for future studies. This study also highlights technical challenges involved in studying sex determination in species with extremely variable mechanisms.

The biological parameters needed to interpret isotopic field data on food webs—namely isotopic incorporation and discrimination (Δ13C and Δ15N)—are unknown for many animals. We investigated the effects of temperature on carbon and nitrogen incorporation and discrimination in Creek Chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) and White Sucker (Catostomus commersonii) by rearing wild-caught fish on a distinct diet at 12 °C and 20 °C for 160 days. Mass specific growth rates were higher at 20 °C. Isotopic turnover was mainly influenced by metabolic processes as opposed to growth in both species, especially White Sucker. Cold-reared fish had slower rates of isotopic incorporation and higher isotopic residence times than warm-reared fish. Discrimination factors were generally smaller for Δ15N (range = 1.9 to 3.0) and larger for Δ13C (range = 1.4 to 2.3) than values reported for other fishes. Variable temperature effects on discrimination suggests unmeasured effects of the experimental diet which will require additional experimentation to tease apart. These results support the hypothesis that metabolic rates are correlated with isotopic incorporation rates in animals dependent on environmental temperature.

Batch spawning, the act of spawning more than once within a spawning season, is assessed in six species of minnows (Cyprinidae) from Ontario, Canada. The bimodal frequency distribution of egg size in mature specimens suggests that the following species are batch spawners: Blacknose Dace (Rhinichthys atratulus), Brassy Minnow (Hybognathus hankinsoni), Common Shiner (Luxilus cornutus), Creek Chub (Semotilus atromaculatus), and Hornyhead Chub (Nocomis biguttatus). However, there is no evidence that Northern Pearl Dace (Margariscus nachtriebi) is a batch spawner. Thus, we now have evidence that 11 of 39 cyprinid species in Ontario are batch spawners. Knowledge about the reproductive habits of these species should be integrated into the comprehensive standards for the protection of fish habitat in Ontario to ensure the survival of populations.
