Finnish urban settlements are in the age of restoration, and the suburbs need improvements in Finland. In this sense, wooden facade renovation and additional floor construction are viable and sustainable solutions for this development in the Finnish context. This chapter focuses on these important applications from the Finnish residents’ perspective as ecologically sound engineering solutions through a survey. In doing so, the challenges of facade renovation, as well as the benefits of additional floor construction, were presented. The main purpose of the survey was to get the opinions of the residents, find out which variables are important, make inferences for the planning and improvement of such areas, and determine what will be emphasized in the sustainable suburban development of the future. Therefore, the results were based on this empirical approach—survey—but further research such as energy analysis, wood-based facade renovation, and additional floor solutions will be done as part of other studies. It is believed that this study will contribute to the use of sustainable materials and decarbonization of buildings as well as zero energy building (nZEB) to overcome the challenges posed by climate change by the diffusion of wood in the renovation of buildings.

The purpose of the article is to characterize the principles of sound recording with microphones in the context of the acoustic spatial features of concert halls, which are an important component in positioning the activities and creative directions of "purism", "individualism" and "realism" in sound engineering. The methodology consists of the use of analytical, historical, and cultural methods, which made it possible to identify and characterize the technological foundations of sound recording using the example of sound engineers. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time in Ukrainian science the principles of microphone sound recording in the context of acoustic spatial features and creative directions of sound engineering "purism", "individualism" and "realism" were defined and characterized. Conclusions. In the work, the data on the spectral response of the frequency range, the stereophonic effect, musical and timbre balance, and the spatial impression of the acoustics of concert halls were determined. The principles of application of multi-microphone technique in instrumental, orchestral, and rock music are revealed; outlined the creative potential of the directions "purism", "individualism" and "realism". in sound engineering. In terms of current cinematic trends and contemporary popular music culture, we hear and become accustomed to exaggeratedly colorful and rich, often "electronic" sound. Since the listener is the ultimate link in the entire recording industry, it is necessary to recognize landmarks in sound engineering aimed at the tastes of the majority.

Assessing and assuring sound quality has become a very important task for product design. Customers expect product sounds without disturbing noises. This is a challenge because spectro-temporal noise patterns (such as tonal sounds or modulated signals that generate a roughness sensation) must be taken into account, in addition to frequency-weighted values like dB(A) and loudness. If the sound of a technical product exhibits these characteristics, it is most likely perceived as having poor quality. The new standard ECMA-418-2 describes methods for the automatic quantification of tonal sounds and modulated sounds, which generate a sensation of roughness. The methods are based on a psychoacoustic hearing model and thus emulate human perception very closely. This paper describes the application of these methods. Several examples show how these parameters can be used for sound engineering and how to interpret the results.

The purpose of this study is to understand one of the earliest known non-brass double-reed instrument called Nagasuram (Nadaswaram). Our ancestors while defining Tamil music grammar in parallel focused on sound engineering, which helped them to invent new musical instruments. Sangam era alone saw more than 30 percussion and wind instruments. Among them, few instruments like Veenai, Urumi and Nagasuram are worth mentioning since their design techniques were known only to a handful of families. Their performance really stands out due to their versatile and adaptable nature to all genres of music. Music instrument, like any other scientific invention goes through the same process of trial and error before getting standardized for general use. Instruments with strong adherence to scientific and acoustic principles gain prominence among the rest, as they undergo minimal structural changes. Nagasuram (Nadaswaram) is one such instrument, which was passed on to us for generations. This instrument readily complies with acoustic principles such as sound impedance, Helmholtz resonance, wave theory etc. to get the characteristic of a loudest non-brass wind instrument.

This article is about the famous sound engineer, talented musician and teacher Vitaly Nikolayevich Gushchin, who made an invaluable contribution to the development of various areas of sound engineering in Uzbekistan, including music, audiovisual and radio ones. He is one of those who carried out highly professional sound recording of classical, folk and pop music works, which made up the richest fund of national culture and are in great consumer demand. V. N. Gushchin trained several generations of specialists who successfully work in many areas of sound engineering in the republic and abroad.
