Stagnation of employees in organizations especially in the civil service in developing countries is an existential issue, that is a potential determinant of intent to quit and actual turnover. Hence, the need to specifically determine the relationship between structural career plateauing (SCP) and turnover intentions of civil servants in South-East Nigeria. Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory was used in anchoring the work. The study adopted a survey research design with a population of 2318 civil servants working in the selected States Secretariats. A sample of 328 was arrived at through the application of Krejcie and Morgan sample size determination formula. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire, whose reliability was ascertained using Cronbach Alpha statistics, with a coefficient of .872. The analysis of data was done using a combination of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The result indicated that SCP was significant in predicting turnover intentions (R-Squared = 0.916679; p-value = 0.0000< 0.05). The study concluded that turnover intention is a phenomenon that is influenced by SCP, as plateauing of employees increase, so also does the intention of the employees to quit. Sequel to this, among others, it was recommended that heads of civil service need to ensure that there is equity, fairness and consistency in the promotion of workers, to avoid a feeling of inequity and injustice, which might make the workers less committed and more inclined to leave.     Keywords: Career Plateauing, Employee Turnover Intentions, Structural Career Plateauing, Content Career Plateauing and Civil Service.

Purpose: Teachers in Kenya exhibit signs of career plateauing, and are registering for post-graduate courses in large numbers. This study investigated whether teachers’ pursuit of post-graduate studies is a result of career plateauing. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between career plateauing and secondary school teachers’ pursuit of post-graduate studies in Nyandarua and Murang’a counties, Kenya. The objectives of the study were to: determine types and levels of career plateauing experienced by secondary school teachers of public schools in Nyandarua and Murang’a Counties; determine the relationship between career plateauing and teachers’ decisions to pursue various Post-Graduate courses; and find out whether the structural or job content type of career plateau predicts teachers’ decisions to pursue various Post-Graduate courses among secondary schools teachers in public schools in Kenya.Methodology: The study employed the correlational research design. The target population of the study comprised of all the 5,022 teachers (3,581 in Murang’a County and 1,441 in Nyandarua County) in all the public schools in Nyandarua and Murang’a Counties except those which were used in the pilot. From this population, the sample size for each county was computed using the sample size computation formula by Krejcie & Morgan (Cohen, Manion & and Morrison, 2007), which gave 304 teachers from Nyandarua County and 348 teachers in Murang’a County. Stratified random sampling was used to select 304 teachers from Nyandarua County and 348 teachers from Murang’a County giving a total of 652 teachers. In Nyandarua County, the sample size was 152 male and 152 female teachers, while in Murang’a County there was 174 male and 174 female teachers. A questionnaire designed for teachers was used as the main tool for data collection. The study generated quantitative data, which was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Qualitative data was reported according to themes and involved the use of frequencies and percentages. Linear progression and Analysis of Variance were also used. Results: Decisions to pursue post-graduate studies is expected to increase 0.014 when structural plateauing rises by one and decrease by 0.012 when job content plateauing goes up by one. Both structural and job content plateauing were found to predict decisions to pursue post-graduate studies significantly at p<0.05.Contributions to theory, policy and practice: The Teachers Service Commission should develop a clear road map for career advancement of the teachers to reduce career plateauing. The Teachers Service Commission in collaboration with the ministry of education should design a skills upgrade for teachers through capacity development programmes which should be a requirement for those joining the profession and which should form a basis for promotion

In the present study, the the impact of work plateau on intention to remain at work with the mediating role of organizational commitment has been studied. The statistical population of this research is all employees of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. The research method is descriptive-survey. According to statistics of personnel management office, the number of employees is 1100 in 2017. In order to determine the sample size, due to the limited population, Morgan table was used and 285 people were selected from population through random sampling. In order to collect the data, Alan and Meyer (1990) questionnaire was used to assess organizational commitment, a researcher-made questionnaire was used to investigate the intention to remain at job and Miliaman's questionnaire (1992) was used to investigate career plateauing. The validity of these three questionnaires has been confirmed by experts. Reliability of the questionnaire is confirmed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 86%, 91% and 84%, respectively. The statistical methods used in this research to test the hypotheses are T value and structural equation modeling. Structural equation model in this study was determined using Liserl software, according to which the content plateau and structural plateau, considering the mediator role of organizational commitment, has a negative and significant impact on employees' intention to remain at work.

AbstractAccording to social exchange theory, the motivation for organizational citizenship behavior can be understood with the help of the frameworks of obligation to reciprocate and expected reciprocity. This study predicts that the true motivation for organizational citizenship behavior could be differentiated conditional on the career plateau. These relationships predict the existence of a U-shaped nonlinear relationship between the career plateau and organizational citizenship behavior. In addition to exploring this relationship, the study attempted to discover the effect of organizational commitment and job involvement on the relationship. As a result, a U-shaped curvilinear relationship is applied between career plateau and four dimensions of organizational citizenship behavior except civic virtue. Commitment and involvement show unexpected moderating effects on those curved relationships.

The purpose of this research was to examine relationships among Career Plateauing, Organizational Commitment and Organization Citizenship Behavior. Two dimensions of career plateauing were measured subjectively from Milliman. Organizational commitment was measured using measures from Meyer and Allen. Organizational citizenship behavior was measured using the tools developed by Organ. Online and pen-and-paper based surveys were used to collect data. Mean, Standard Deviation, t-Test, Analysis of Variance, and Pearson's Correlation were used to analyze data; a total of 102 questionnaires were collected. The findings summarized as follows: Career plateauing and job content plateauing were significantly and negatively correlated with affective commitment, but not continuous commitment. The strength of the correlation is medium. Career plateauing was not significantly correlated with Organizational Citizenship. Significant and negative correlation was found between Sportsmanship and Continuous Commitment. Significant and positive correlation found between Courtesy and Affective Commitment. The strength of the correlations was low.
