Abstract In magnetic confinement fusion reactors, superconducting magnet systems are essential for generating and controlling high magnetic fields. To increase the magnetic field, new superconducting materials such as Bi2212 (Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x) have been selected in the design of magnet systems. However, the stability of the Bi2212 superconductor under magnetic fields must be studied for the routine and safe operation of magnet systems. In this work, the stability and degradation mechanism of a Bi2212 cable under magnetic fields were investigated. With a magnetic field of 5.8 T, the cable carrying 29 kA was exerted with a force of ~168.2 kN per meter. In the core area of the cable, moved wires were detected by computed tomography (CT). The macroscopic movement of the wires would vary with the axial position, which could be related to the twist structure. Then, the cable was decomposed, and the acquired wires were tested under 12 T at 4.2 K by four-probe method. The results indicated that the inner wires had relatively lower critical currents, which should be the reason for the degradation of cable performance. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the superconducting phase within the wires confirmed that cracks existed in the superconducting phase of the inner wires, while intact crystals were found in that of the outer wires. The variation in microstructures gave rise to changes in the wire performance.

The First Helicon Plasma Physics and Applications Workshop was held on September 23−24, 2021, through Zoom Cloud Meeting, instead of in an on-site gathering, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was convened by Rod Boswell (IOC) and Guangnan Luo (LOC), and organised by Lei Chang’s group. The workshop attracted 110 registrations and ∼100 online audiences from ∼30 affiliations. There were 33 presentations covering the various fundamental physics of helicon plasma and its applications to space electric propulsion, material processing, and magnetic confinement fusion. This paper highlights the presentations, discussions, and perspectives given in the workshop, serving as reference for the helicon community.

The dynamic-shell target is a new class of design for inertial confinement fusion (ICF). These targets address some of the target fabrication challenges prevalent in current ICF targets and take advantage of advances in manufacturing technologies. This study first examines how the dynamic-shell design can be used to control the density of the central region and therefore convergence ratio, thus expanding the design space for ICF. Additionally, the concern of low-mode perturbation growth is considered. A new class of high-performing beam configurations, based on icosahedral polyhedra and charged-particle simulations is proposed. These configurations achieve low levels of irradiation nonuniformity through selection of beam shapes that suppress the dominant symmetrical mode.

Abstract The derivation of the multi-temperature generalized Zhdanov closure is provided starting from the most general form of the left hand side of the moment averaged kinetic equation with the Sonine-Hermite polynomial ansatz for an arbitrary number of moments. The process of arriving at the reduced higher-order moment equations, with its assumptions and approximations, is explicitly outlined. The generalized multi-species, multi-temperature coefficients from the authors' previous article are used to compute values of higher order moments such as heat flux in terms of the lower order moments. Transport coefficients and the friction and thermal forces for magnetic confinement fusion relevant cases with the generalized coefficients are compared to the scheme with the single-temperature coefficients previously provided by Zhdanov et al. It is found that the 21N-moment multi-temperature coefficients are adequate for most cases relevant to fusion. Furthermore, the 21N-moment scheme is also tested against the trace approximation to determine the range of validity of the trace approximation with respect to fusion relevant plasmas. Possible refinements to the closure scheme are illustrated as well, in order to account for quantities which might be significant in certain schemes such as the drift approximation.

Abstract A new method to reduce the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in inertial confinement fusion conditions is proposed by changing the incident light phase discretely. The proposal is first examined by three-wave coupling equations and then verified by Vlasov simulations. A remarkable decreasing in SRS reflectivity is observed when the period of phase changing is less than 2π/γ, where γ is the growth rate of SRS. By contrast, some simulations with continuously changing phase of incident light are carried out to compare their influence on SRS. In addition, the proposal may suppress the stimulated Brillouin scattering.
