Abstract The photovoltaics (PV) industry is booming at an impressive rate. Knowledge of the outdoor perfor-mance of different PV technologies under different climatic conditions is becoming increasingly im-portant for all stakeholders. The aim of this research was to perform the outdoor characterisation of three PV technologies in a tropical climate and evaluate their performances with the aid of a set of key performance indicators. An innovative energy autonomous outdoor test facility has been used to measure the weather conditions and the IV curves of mono-Si, poly-Si and CIGS PV modules. Each IV curve was sampled within less than a second, for every 10 minutes, between sunrise and sunset for a whole year, representing a data set of around 28,000 IV curves of 240 points each. The variations of current, voltage and power were thoroughly studied for changes in temperature and irradiance. This paper reports the variations of temperature coefficients of current, voltage and power with the inten-sity of light. While PV module documentation only present the temperature coefficients of the short circuit current and open circuit voltage at Standard Test Conditions, this paper additionally provides highly valuable information to PV system designers on the variation of these coefficients in the field. The research is also the first to report the variations of the fill factor with temperature and irradi-ance. In general, the wafer technologies were found to have a better performance than the thin film technology. Moreover, the open-circuit temperature coefficient was found to improve for higher irra-diances only for the wafer technologies, while that for the thin-film technology experienced a degrada-tion. The temperature coefficient of current for the mono-Si module was found to be positive at low irradiance levels, but negative at higher irradiance levels.

This work presents an extensive, comparative study of the gamma and electron radiation effects on the behaviour of femtosecond laser-inscribed fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) using the point-by-point and plane-by-plane inscription methods. The FBGs were inscribed in standard telecommunication single mode silica fibre (SMF28) and exposed to a total accumulated radiation dose of 15 kGy for both gamma and electron radiation. The gratings’ spectra were measured and analysed before and after the exposure to radiation, with complementary material characterisation using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Changes in the response of the FBGs’ temperature coefficients were analysed on exposure to the different types of radiation, and we consider which of the two inscription methods result in gratings that are more robust in such harsh environments. Moreover, we used the FTIR spectroscopy to locate which chemical bonds are responsible for the changes on temperature coefficients and which are related with the optical characteristics of the FBGs.

Abstract The derivation of the multi-temperature generalized Zhdanov closure is provided starting from the most general form of the left hand side of the moment averaged kinetic equation with the Sonine-Hermite polynomial ansatz for an arbitrary number of moments. The process of arriving at the reduced higher-order moment equations, with its assumptions and approximations, is explicitly outlined. The generalized multi-species, multi-temperature coefficients from the authors' previous article are used to compute values of higher order moments such as heat flux in terms of the lower order moments. Transport coefficients and the friction and thermal forces for magnetic confinement fusion relevant cases with the generalized coefficients are compared to the scheme with the single-temperature coefficients previously provided by Zhdanov et al. It is found that the 21N-moment multi-temperature coefficients are adequate for most cases relevant to fusion. Furthermore, the 21N-moment scheme is also tested against the trace approximation to determine the range of validity of the trace approximation with respect to fusion relevant plasmas. Possible refinements to the closure scheme are illustrated as well, in order to account for quantities which might be significant in certain schemes such as the drift approximation.

This work is interested in verifying and analyzing the advanced neutronics assembly program KYLIN V2.0. Assembly calculations are an integral part of the two-step calculation for core design, and their accuracy directly affects the results of the core physics calculations. In this paper, we use the Doppler coefficient numerical benchmark problem and CPR1000 AFA-3G fuel assemblies to verify and analyze the advanced neutronics assembly program KYLIN V2.0 developed by the Nuclear Power Institute of China. The analysis results show that the Doppler coefficients calculated by KYLIN V2.0 are in good agreement with the results of other well-known nuclear engineering design software in the world; the power distributions of AFA-3G fuel assemblies are in good agreement with the results of the RMC calculations, it’s error distribution is in accordance with the normal distribution. It shows that KYLIN V2.0 has high calculation accuracy and meets the engineering design requirements.

Carbon nanotube (CNT)/copper composites offer promise as lightweight temperature-stable electrical conductors for future electrical and electronic devices substituting copper. However, clarifying how constituent nanotube structures influence CNT/Cu electrical performances has remained a major research challenge. Here, we investigate the correlation between the CNT/Cu electrical performances and nanotube structure by preparing and characterizing composites containing nanotubes of different structural attributes. We prepared three types of composites—single-wall (SW)-CNT/Cu wires, SW-CNT/Cu pillars, and multi-wall (MW)-CNT/Cu wires. The composites were fabricated from the corresponding CNT templates by two-step Cu electrodeposition, which retains template nanotube attributes through the fabrication process. The nanotube characteristics (diameter, G/D, alignment, etc.) in each template as well as the internal structure and electrical performances of the corresponding composites were characterized. SW-CNT/Cu wires and pillars outperformed MW-CNT/Cu wires, showing ≈ 3× higher room-temperature four-probe conductivities (as high as 30–40% Cu-conductivity). SW-CNT/Cu also showed up to 4× lower temperature coefficients of resistances i.e., more temperature-stable conductivities than MW-CNT/Cu. Our results suggest that few-walled small-diameter nanotubes can contribute to superior temperature-stable CNT/Cu conductivities. Better CNT crystallinity (high G/D), fewer nanotube ends/junctions, and nanotube alignment may be additionally beneficial. We believe that these results contribute to strategies for improving CNT/Cu performances to enable the real-world application of these materials as Cu substitutes.

Abstract The Serpent Monte Carlo code and the Serpent-Ants two step calculation chain are used to model the hot zero power physics tests described in the BEAVRS benchmark. The predicted critical boron concentrations, control rod group worths and isothermal temperature coefficients are compared between Serpent and Serpent-Ants as well as against the experimental measurements. Furthermore, radial power distributions in the unrodded and rodded core configurations are compared between Serpent and Serpent-Ants. In addition to providing results using a best practices calculation chain, the effects of several simplifications or omissions in the group constant generation process on the results are estimated. Both the direct and two-step neutronics solutions provide results close to the measured values. Comparison between the measured data and the direct Serpent Monte Carlo solution yields RMS differences of 12.1 mg/kg, 25.1 × 10-5 and 0.67 × 10-5 K-1 for boron, control rod worths and temperature coefficients respectively. The two-step Serpent-Ants solution reaches a similar level of accuracy with RMS differences of 17.4 mg/kg, 23.6 × 10-5 and 0.29 × 10-5 K-1. The match in the radial power distribution between Serpent and Serpent-Ants was very good with the RMS and maximum for pin power errors being 1.31 % and 4.99 % respectively in the unrodded core and 1.67 %(RMS) and 8.39 % (MAX) in the rodded core.

We report self- and air collisional broadening coefficients for the H2O line at 7299.43 cm−1 and corresponding temperature coefficients for a temperature range spanning 293–573 K. New laser spectroscopic setups specifically designed for this purpose have been developed and are described. The line parameters reported here are in good agreement with those values reported in the HITRAN 2020 database, but the uncertainties have been reduced by factors of about 4, 1.3 and 4.4 for the self-broadening coefficient, air broadening coefficient and the temperature exponent of air broadening, respectively. Further, we combined our measurement approach with metrological data quality objectives, addressing the traceability of the results to the international system of units (SI) and evaluated the uncertainties following the guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM).
