Abstract A new virus, named Mutum virus, of the Family Tymoviridae was isolated from mosquitoes (Mansonia spp.). This virus was isolated in clone C6/36 cells. After complete sequencing, it presented a genome with 6,494 nt. The isolated virus is phylogenetically more related to two viruses isolated from Culex spp. mosquitoes: Ek Balam virus, isolated from Mexico, and Culex-originated Tymoviridae-like virus, isolated from China. Owing to the similarity of the protein coding domains, genomic organization, and phylogenetic analysis, we suggest that this virus belongs to a new genus, family Tymoviridae

Chapter 10 examines the beginnings of the residential settlement pattern for the late Middle Preclassic Period at Ek Balam, in northeast Yucatan. It also offers a discussion of the transition to the Late Preclassic period and information about the transition of village life toward urban origins during this ancient time at the site. The Middle Preclassic ceramic assemblage is similar to others in the northern Maya lowlands and the data suggests a dispersed settlement pattern with hints at a site-wide construction standard. Also of interest is that the archaeological data suggests paired structures. During the Late Preclassic there is a gradual shift in the settlement pattern including possible nucleation on the eastern side. There is also no longer evidence for paired structures.

Designated a World Heritage site in 1998 by UNESCO, Chichen Itza in Yucatan, Mexico, has fascinated explorers, scholars, and visitors for nearly 500 years. Yet, despite Chichen Itza’s extensive written corpus, fundamental questions remain regarding the occupants, rulers, ritual and religious nature, political economy, and even chronology of this late Maya capital. This volume presents new archaeological, epigraphic, ceramic, and art historical data and contemporary interpretations regarding Chichen Itza both in terms of its internal dynamics and in terms of its relationships with smaller sites in the surrounding area. Utilizing concepts of landscape as both geographic and ideological milieus, some chapters explore the ways that the presence of Chichen Itza was felt in regional sites, including Popola, Ichmul de Morley, and Ek Balam, and how boundaries operated between such sites. Other chapters analyze visual culture through the lenses of iconography, political geography, ritual, and gender to examine the hieroglyphic texts, sculpture, painting and buildings at Chichen Itza, including the Castillo, the Osario, and the Mercado. The volume presents new avenues to understand Chichen Itza and its environs.
