Abstract The potential possibility of using coherent optics for non-destructive testing to modify the microstructure of the surface of apples under the influence of chemical factors was studied. The model objects included solar and shade sides of fruits of Antonovka Common variety, untreated (control) and treated with diphenylamine (DPA). The amplitude-phase parameters of laser radiation reflected from the fruit surface were evaluated using a polarization shearing interferometer. It was experimentally shown that by the intensity and degree of coherence of the reflected laser radiation of the surface of apples, it is possible to register the anatomical and morphological characteristics of their tissues. It was revealed that after two months of storage, the spatial coherence of light scattering of the shadow side of an apple is higher than that of the solar, and the surface of apples treated with diphenylamine has a higher coherence of light scattering of the surface of both the solar and shadow sides. It was shown that the transpiration of apples treated with diphenylamine exceeds the transpiration of control apples.

The article states that in the context of the formation of a modern legal system, democratization of law-enforcement institutions, proclamation of a course of maximum efficiency of the rights and freedoms of citizens protection, one of the leading priorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine is the procedure of the creation of a highly professional staff capable of effectively solving law enforcement tasks. Transformation of public administration, profound changes in the personnel structure of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, changes in the essence, goals and functional orientation of law enforcement activities require an expansion of the scope of research on the problems of professionalization in this area. Activity is an integral part of a person's lifestyle, an important factor in its formation and development as a member of society and an individual. Professional tasks execution, along with the maximum concentration on the positive results, can lead to side effects. One of them is professional deformation, which objectively represents not a fatal, but a really probable expense, the so-called shadow side of the profession. Subjectively, it is a tribute that a person unwillingly pays for excessive specialization, unquenchable passion for activities, the maximum level of demands to herself. Professional deformation can occur as a result of any activity. But most often, according to the different research, it affects representatives of such professions that involve activities of the type "man-man": teachers, actors, service workers, lawyers. This problem is highly important for law enforcement agencies because their representatives are dealing with intense deformation influence. Professional deformation as one of the complex and multisided problems of law enforcement requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary solution of legal, managerial, psychological and other tasks. The professionalism of law enforcement personnel lags behind the growing demands of reality, so today, under the influence of a complex operational environment and criminalization of state life, the research under such problem of professionalization of personnel as the professional deformation of the employee and related problems of organization and management in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine is becoming increasingly important.

No matter how valuable is specialization in medicine, no matter how much we owe it to it for the most detailed development of individual branches of our science, we still have to note the shadow side of this direction: general provisions and improvements in technology in one area do not so soon become the property of, and sometimes completely disappear for another ... As we delve deeper into one discipline, we do not have time to monitor the success of another.

Abstract Humility of universal value. It pervades different layers of human existence. Examples abide in religion, in psychology, and art. Its presence offers rich sources of material and interesting parallels with Jung’s writings. Humility is unfortunately generally viewed as a weakness to the point of ridicule. In this view it is something to be avoided, hidden, rejected, or in some cases concealed by the opposite attitude such as false humility. In Jungian Psychology this weakness belongs to the shadow side of personality and is related to ego defenses. This is why Jung views humility as the acceptance of the shadow and considers it necessary for healing in the process of individuation. The immediate parallel is to be found in the words of St. Paul Cor. 12,9; “my power is manifest in weakness”; referring to the kind of weakness which means being completely supple, transparent, and abandoned to the power that goes beyond our conscious mind.

Based on an autoethnographic study of early career researchers’ field research experiences, we show how individuals deal with moments of discrimination that present identity threats. This is accomplished through participating in the construction of a shared holding environment to provide emotional shelter and resources for resultant identity work. We show how they collectively develop anticipatory responses to future identity threats and inadvertently how this allows the effects of discrimination to be both unchallenged and amplified. We draw implications for identity work theory, adding to current understandings of identity threats, tensions, and challenges and the dynamics through which these are addressed, avoided, or worked around, as well as the shadow side of such activities. We also offer practical implications about the business schools’ role in nurturing early career researchers’ identity work.

Why do humans who seem to be exemplars of virtue also have the capacity to act in atrocious ways? What are the roots of tendencies for sin and evil? A popular assumption is that it is our animalistic natures that are responsible for human immorality and sin, while our moral nature curtails and contains such tendencies through human powers of freedom and higher reason. This book challenges such assumptions as being far too simplistic. Through a careful engagement with evolutionary and psychological literature, it argues that tendencies towards vice are, more often than not, distortions of the very virtues that are capable of making us good. After beginning with Augustine’s classic theory of original sin, the book probes the philosophical implications of sin’s origins in dialogue with the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur. Different vices are treated in both individual and collective settings in keeping with a multispecies approach. Areas covered include selfishness, pride, violence, anger, injustice, greed, envy, gluttony, deception, lying, lust, despair, anxiety, and sloth. The work of Thomas Aquinas helps to illuminate and clarify much of this discussion on vice, including those vices which are more distinctive for human persons in community with other beings. Such an approach amounts to a search for the shadow side of human nature, shadow sophia. Facing that shadow is part of a fuller understanding of what makes us human and thus this book is a contribution to both theological anthropology and theological ethics.

This study uses the archetype of a ‘trickster’ to reflect back on, and hence problematize, the role of the educator/facilitator identity in leadership learning. This is based on the view that a trickster is a permanent resident in liminal spaces and that these liminal spaces play an important role in leadership learning. Our approach was based on the reading of the trickster literature alongside reflective conversations on our own experiences of facilitation of leadership learning, development and education. We suggest that paying attention to the trickster tale draws attention to the romanticization of leadership development and its facilitation as based on a response to crisis that leads to a further enhancement of the leader as a hero. Hence, it also offers ways to problematize leadership learning by uncovering the shadow side of facilitation and underlying power relations. We therefore contribute by showing how, as facilitators, we can use the trickster archetype to think more critically, reflectively and reflexively about our role and practices as educators, in particular, the ethical and power-related issues. In our conclusions, we make recommendations for research, theory and practice and invite other facilitators to share with us their trickster tales.
