Although a battery is a DC device, AC current is often necessary for testing, preheating, impedance spectroscopy, and advanced charging. This paper presents a versatile control technique to inject AC current to a battery. Synchronous buck and H-bridge topologies are operated in bidirectional mode and controlled by uni-polar and bi-polar pulse width modulation techniques for the AC current injection. The input and output passive circuits are specially designed considering AC current and the properties of the battery. A controller is proposed considering a small internal impedance, small AC ripple voltage, and variable DC offset voltage of a battery. The controller is capable of maintaining stable operation of AC current injection in two power quadrant within a small DC voltage boundary of a battery. The controller is comprised of a feedback compensator, a feedforward term, and an estimator. The feedback gain is designed considering the internal impedance. The feedforward gain is designed based on estimated open circuit battery voltage and input voltage. The open circuit voltage estimator is designed based on filters and battery model. For validation, AC current is injected to a Valence U-12XP battery. The battery is rated for 40 Ah nominal capacity and 13.8 V nominal voltage The controller successfully injected AC current to a battery with +10 A, 0 A and −10 A DC currents. The magnitude and frequency of the AC current was up to 5 A and 2 kHz respectively.

This article aims to describe the most important aspects to consider when using the concept of internal impedance in algorithms that focus on characterizing the degradation of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. The first part of the article provides a literature review that will help the reader understand the concept of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and how Li-ion batteries can be represented through electrochemical or empirical models, in order to interpret the outcome of typical discharge and/or degradation tests on Li-ion batteries. The second part of the manuscript shows the obtained results of an accelerated degradation experiment performed under controlled conditions on a Li-ion cell. Results show that changes observed on the EIS test can be linked to battery degradation. This knowledge may be of great value when implementing algorithms aimed to predict the End-of-Life (EoL) of the battery in terms of temperature, voltage, and discharge current measurements. The purpose of this article is to introduce the reader to several types of Li-ion battery models, and show how the internal impedance of a Li-ion battery is a dynamic parameter that depends on different factors; and then, illustrate how the EIS can be used to obtain an equivalent circuit model and how the different electronic components vary with the use given to the battery.

The coreless microgenerators implemented in electromagnetic vibration energy harvesting devices usually suffer from power deficiency. This can be noticeably improved by optimizing the distribution of separate turns within the armature winding. The purposeful optimization routine developed in this work is based on numerical identification of the turns that contribute most to the electromotive force and the elimination of those with the least contribution in order to reduce the internal impedance of the winding. The associated mixed integer nonlinear programming problem is solved comparatively using three approaches employing surrogate models based on kriging. The results show very good performance of the strategy based on a sequentially refined kriging in terms of the ability to accurately localize extremum and reduction of the algorithm execution time. As a result of optimization, the output power of the system increased by some 300 percent with respect to the initial configuration.
