Safeguarding is the duty of all those who work with children. Morbidity and mortality from child abuse are common. This chapter summarizes the main types of child abuse and the roles of the agencies that work to safeguard children. The key things to remember are if you suspect abuse, then report it; make clear contemporaneous notes in all safeguarding cases; interagency communication is integral to cohesive and linked-up child safeguarding; and participation in regular child protection updates is essential to continue professional development.

BackgroundFeedback and audit are ways of reflecting upon professional practice (Ivers et al, 2012). Opportunities for feedback have been cited as one of the mechanisms which ambulance staff develop their decision-making skills and reflect on their practice (Ivers et al, 2014).MethodsA digital patient outcome feedback intervention (POFI) was designed and tested. POFI reported patient outcomes, clinical investigations and treatment after conveyance to hospital. A data sharing agreement between one hospital and ambulance service was secured. Ambulance staff were surveyed and interviewed regarding its desirability, impact and usability. Descriptive and thematic data analysis was performed.ResultsRespondents were enthusiastic about feedback, reflected in a good response rate to the first survey (N=186). This was not matched by high POFI usage or the second survey (N=28). This may be because it is not yet easily accessible or well known. Respondents indicated feedback is likely to improve decision-making confidence, enhance self-efficacy and patient safety. They felt it would contribute to learning through self-reflection, enhancing knowledge and skills and thus continue professional development. Feedback provides an opportunity to clear up mysteries and support wellbeing.ConclusionsFeedback is desirable, but requires a commitment by ambulance services and hospital sites to share data and then feedback system with staff. There are pockets of interest, nationally, in giving feedback to ambulance staff. This project is the only one known, using a digital mechanism. Other projects give personalised feedback through ‘post-boxes’ or other written requests. Further study could be carried out in collaboration with these similar projects. It is important to work out the best mechanism of sharing data, to suit information governance requirements, whilst also contributing to ambulance confidence, learning and wellbeing.

Reflective teaching is a relatively important issue in the field of teachers’ continue professional development. In this study, the author reviewed previous studies that investigated reflective teaching had positive influence for teachers’ progress in the long run. There were 13 different experiments analyzed in this article. Through a series analysis, five positive impact factors of reflective teaching were extracted: (a) Reflective teaching is correlated with the coefficient of the teacher’s CPD, (b) Teachers using reflective teaching will enhance teaching energy and confidence, (c) Teaching journal writing causes positive effects on the promotion of teaching quality, responsibility and consciousness, (d) Positive reflection attitude, academic qualifications and the overseas study experience promote the efficiency of teacher’s CPD, and (e) Based on group reflective discussions, teachers have more enthusiasm to share their thinking and get some new and creative teaching methods. Whereas, this study also showed that lack of theoretical knowledge restricts the teacher’s autonomous reflection ability. In addition, the researcher pointed three implications are used for teaching in class. Firstly, the reflective consciousness should be cultivated. Secondly, teachers need to focus on the combination of reflection theory and teaching practice. Thirdly, school and society should supply training activities and relax the environment for English teachers to enhance the quality of their reflection.

With the pressure to continue professional development in the P-12 environment, typically via additional educational degrees, many have exhausted the masters degree-level training and are looking at the doctoral level of degrees. However, considerations of the amount of time and effort involved in pursuing doctoral-level degrees, the financial costs of the work, and confusion around which type of degree to pursue, have combined to create barriers in moving forward. This article is meant to assist in making this decision by talking about the differences between PhD and EdD programs and by advocating for a choice of the EdD. The advantages and value of EdD programs are discussed.

The wide use of machine and machinery in the construction industry can reduce the dependency on foreign workers. The Construction Industry Development Board is formulating a strategic plan to promote the use of machine and machinery in the construction industry. Therefore, this study aims to study the level and status of the usage machine and machinery among the G7 contractors at construction sites. The instrument used in the study consist of questionnaire and interviews. Based on the literature findings, there are 9 types of machine and 9 types machinery used in the construction industry. The percentage use of machine and machinery as well as the level of mechanisation for each phase of construction is at level 1, where the machine and machinery is still driven by the operator and do not involved high technology. The main recommendation in this study is to provide training on the latest information on machine and machinery and CPD (Continue Professional Development) training to promote the use of machine and machinery. In addition, the offering better incentives such as tax breaks and loan facilities should be awarded and provided by the government to activate the economic growth.
