Memory-guided predictions can improve event comprehension by guiding attention and the eyes to the location where an actor is about to perform an action. But when events change, viewers may experience predictive looking errors and need to update their memories. In two experiments (Ns = 38 and 111), we examined the consequences of mnemonic predictive looking errors for comprehending and remembering event changes. University students watched movies of everyday activities with actions that repeated exactly and actions that repeated with changed features—for example, an actor reached for a paper towel on one occasion and a dish towel on the next. Memory guidance led to predictive looking errors that were associated with better memory for subsequently changed event features. These results indicate that retrieving recent event features can guide predictions during unfolding events, and that error signals derived from mismatches between mnemonic predictions and actual events contribute to new learning.

The aim of this study was to assess the DNA preservation capability of cellulose paper towel and blotting paper as low-cost alternatives to commercial DNA preservation products. Chicken blood was applied as DNA source to each paper towel, blotting paper, FTA® cards and DNA/RNA Shield™. All samples were stored at room temperature for 130 days. DNA extraction from dried blood spots was performed after various time periods using Tris–EDTA and NaOH protocols. PCR activity and the mean amount of DNA isolated from paper towels were reliable. The results of this study demonstrated that cellulose-based blotting paper and especially paper towel had considerable DNA binding and preservation capacity for at least 130 days at room temperature without DNA degradation.

Abstract Piglets are born wet, and evaporation of that moisture decreases body temperature, increasing the risk of mortality. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of two commercially applicable methods for drying piglets at birth on piglet rectal temperature over 24 h after birth. The study was carried out in standard commercial farrowing facilities with 52 litters, using a completely randomized design with three Drying Treatments: Control (not dried); Desiccant (dried at birth using a cellulose-based desiccant); Paper Towel (dried at birth using paper towels). Litters were randomly allotted to treatments at the birth of the first piglet. At birth, piglets were individually identified, and the treatment was applied. Rectal temperature was measured at 0, 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, 120, and 1,440 min (24 h) after birth. Data were analyzed using a repeated measures model with PROC MIXED of SAS, with litter as the experimental unit and piglet a subsample of the litter. The model included the fixed effects of treatment and time (as a repeated measure), and the interaction. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of treatment on temperature at birth, or 10 or 1,440 min after birth. Piglet temperatures between 20 and 120 min after birth were similar (P > 0.05) for the Desiccant and Paper Towel treatments, but were greater (P ≤ 0.05) than the Control. The effect of birth weight on the response to Drying Treatment was evaluated by dividing the data into Light (<1.0 kg), Medium (1.0 to 1.5 kg), or Heavy (>1.5 kg) piglet Birth Weight Categories. Piglet rectal temperature data at each measurement time were analyzed using a model that included the fixed effects of Birth Weight Category, Drying Treatment, and the interaction. Temperatures of Light piglets were lower (P ≤ 0.05) than those of Heavy piglets between 20 and 120 min after birth, with Medium piglets being intermediate and generally different to the other two weight categories at these times. The difference in temperature between Light as compared with Medium or Heavy piglets was greater for the Control than the other two Drying Treatments at 60 min after birth. These results suggest that drying piglets at birth is an effective method to reduce rectal temperature decline in the early postnatal period, especially for low birth weight piglets.

Potassium monopersulfate (KMPS) was used in repulping of polyamide-epichlorohydrin (PAE)-containing paper towel. The effectiveness of the repulping aid was compared with that of sodium hypochlorite. Addition of a 2.4% KMPS repulping aid achieved complete repulping of the paper towel, resulting in 88% screen yield and about 5% rejects. To reach a similar pulping result, two times the oxidative equivalent amount of sodium hypochlorite had to be used. Compared to the pulp fibers obtained from sodium hypochlorite repulping, those obtained from KMPS repulping had higher physical strength, longer fiber length, and lower fines content. This study demonstrated that KMPS was superior to sodium hypochlorite in repulping of PAE-containing paper towel in terms of effectiveness and pulp quality.

This article describes development and confirmatory testing of a method to study the evaporation of a volatile solvent containing ignitable ingredients in an isolated subsurface structure, a type of confined space. Accidental spillage and surreptitious disposal of chemical products in streets create a risk of fire and explosions in these structures. Development of the method included consideration about instrument safety; personal exposure; volume of the structure (2.5 m3); evaporation rate; temperature of the airspace; and number of opening(s) in the manhole cover. Confirmatory testing utilized 10 mL of lacquer thinner (60% to 80% toluene, 10% to 20% methylethyl ketone (MEK), 5% to 10% methanol and 1% to 9% acetone) on a wetted paper towel positioned near the bottom of the structure. This methodology produced a maximum of 2150 ppm of ‘isobutylene units’ on a PID (PhotoIonization sensor) positioned about 15 cm above the sample. This concentration corresponds to about 1140 ppm of toluene (less than 10% of the Lower Flammable Limit of 12,700 ppm). This method offers a stable, safe platform for study of the process. Evaporation of solvent and exchange between the external atmosphere and the airspace regulate the concentration of vapor, which can typically persist for 24 to 48 h.
