An albino infant wallaby was born to a mother with the wild-type body color. PCR and sequencing analyses of <i>TYR</i> (encoding tyrosinase, which is essential for melanin biosynthesis) of this albino wallaby revealed a 7.1-kb-long DNA fragment inserted in the first exon. Because the fragment carried long terminal repeats, we assumed it to be a copy of an endogenous retrovirus, which we named <i>walb</i>. We cloned other <i>walb</i> copies residing in the genomes of this species and another wallaby species. The copies exhibited length variation, and the longest copy (>8.0 kb) contained open reading frames whose deduced amino acid sequences were well aligned with those of <i>gag</i>, <i>pol</i>, and <i>env</i> of retroviruses. It is not known through which of the following likely processes the walb copy was inserted into <i>TYR</i>: endogenization (infection of a germline cell by an exogenous virus), reinfection (infection by a virus produced from a previously endogenized provirus), or retrotransposition (intracellular relocation of a provirus). In any case, the insertion into <i>TYR</i> is considered to have been a recent event on an evolutionary timescale because albino mutant alleles generally do not persist for long because of their deleterious effects in wild circumstances.

The Roman preoccupation with the Alps as the tutamen of Italy owed its epistemic immediacy to a much more recent event—the Cimbric Wars (113-101 BCE). This traumatic episode had reawakened imagery of the northern enemies penetrating the “Wall of Italy,” which in some cases went all the way back to the Mid-Republican narrative traditions of the Gallic Invasions and the much more frequently debated shock of Hannibal’s invasion. The significance of this imagery continued even beyond the Augustan era, so that remnants of the same Roman insecurity about the “Wall of Italy” being breached, especially by northerners, are preserved in narratives about later Julio-Claudians such as Caligula and Nero. This article first looks at the likely origins of the idea of the Alps as the “Wall of Italy” in Middle-Republican perceptions, projected back onto the past and presenting Rome as predestined to dominate Italy and the Gauls in particular as external intruders in the peninsula. Next, the Late Republican and Augustan stages of the motif is reviewed, and the impact of the Cimbric Wars on this imagery is debated. Finally, there will be brief discussion of anecdotes found in Tacitus and Suetonius about later Julio-Claudian episodes in which the fear of a northern invasion breaching the Alps seem to have gripped the Romans.

Problem gambling is a gambling disorder often described as continued gambling in the face of increasing losses. In this article, we explored problem gambling behaviour and its psychological determinants. We considered the assumption of stability in risky preferences, anticipated by both normative and descriptive theories of decision making, as well as recent evidence that risk preferences are in fact ‘constructed on the fly’ during risk elicitation. Accordingly, we argue that problem gambling is a multifaceted disorder, which is ‘fueled on the fly’ by a wide range of contextual and non-contextual influences, including individual differences in personality traits, hormonal and emotional activations. We have proposed that the experience of gambling behaviour in itself is a dynamic experience of events in time series, where gamblers anchor on the most recent event—typically a small loss or rare win. This is a highly adaptive, but erroneous, decision-making mechanism, where anchoring on the most recent event alters the psychological representations of substantial and accumulated loss in the past to a representation of negligible loss. In other words, people feel better while they gamble. We conclude that problem gambling researchers and policy makers will need to employ multifaceted and holistic approaches to understand problem gambling.

Abstract Bacterial genomes typically consist of one large chromosome, but can also include secondary replicons. These so-called multipartite genomes are scattered on the bacterial tree of life with the majority of cases belonging to Proteobacteria. Within the class gamma-proteobacteria, multipartite genomes are restricted to the two families Vibrionaceae and Pseudoalteromonadaceae. Whereas the genome of vibrios is well studied, information on the Pseudoalteromonadaceae genome is much scarcer. We have studied Pseudoalteromonadaceae with respect to the origin of the chromid, how pangene categories are distributed, how genes are expressed relative to their genomic location, and identified chromid hallmark genes. We calculated the Pseudoalteromonadaceae pangenome based on 25 complete genomes and found that core/softcore are significantly overrepresented in late replicating sectors of the chromid, regardless of how the chromid is replicated. On the chromosome, core/softcore and shell/cloud genes are only weakly overrepresented at the chromosomal replication origin and termination sequences, respectively. Gene expression is trending downwards with increasing distance from the chromosomal oriC, whereas the chromidal expression pattern is more complex. Moreover, we identified 78 chromid hallmark genes, and BLASTp searches suggest that the majority of them were acquired from the ancestral gene pool of Alteromonadales. Finally, our data strongly suggest that the chromid originates from a plasmid that was acquired in a relatively recent event. In summary, this work extends our knowledge on multipartite genomes, and helps us understand how and why secondary replicons are acquired, why they are maintained, and how they are shaped by evolution.

The 2020 protests on police brutality and racial discrimination in the United States constitute the most recent event of black dissent in what is a history marked by injustice, humiliation, exploitation and the denial of freedom, equality and self-representation of a specific group of people. Dissent can be exercised in many ways and in different areas of society. Over the past few years, Ava DuVernay has produced filmic works that are counter-narratives to the forms of representation imposed on African-Americans by the dominant white majority. This paper analyzes two of those works, Selma (2014) and 13th (2016), and considers their potential as instruments of dissent within the context of black resistance, at a time when racial relations are once again under scrutiny.

Memory-guided predictions can improve event comprehension by guiding attention and the eyes to the location where an actor is about to perform an action. But when events change, viewers may experience predictive looking errors and need to update their memories. In two experiments (Ns = 38 and 111), we examined the consequences of mnemonic predictive looking errors for comprehending and remembering event changes. University students watched movies of everyday activities with actions that repeated exactly and actions that repeated with changed features—for example, an actor reached for a paper towel on one occasion and a dish towel on the next. Memory guidance led to predictive looking errors that were associated with better memory for subsequently changed event features. These results indicate that retrieving recent event features can guide predictions during unfolding events, and that error signals derived from mismatches between mnemonic predictions and actual events contribute to new learning.

The field of self-access has spanned 50 years, and in this report, the authors give a brief overview of a recent event organized by the Research Institute for Learner Autonomy Education (RILAE) with the theme of ‘Landmarks in self-access’. The authors also make reference to some landmark and recent publications in learner autonomy and self-access that have influenced the field.

The Australian genus Theprisa Moore, 1963, is taxonomically revised to comprise five species, two newly described: Theprisa darlingtoni Liebherr &amp; Porch, sp. nov. of Tasmania, and Theprisa otway Liebherr, Porch &amp; Maddison, sp. nov. from the Otway Ranges, Victoria. Two previously described species, T. australis (Castelnau) and T. montana (Castelnau), are distributed in the mountains of Victoria. The third previously described species, T. convexa (Sloane) is found in Tasmania. A lectotype is designated for T. convexa because the various syntypes are ambiguously labelled. Cladistic analysis based on morphological characters establishes monophyly of Theprisa relative to the Australian genera Sitaphe Moore and Spherita Liebherr. This and a second clade of Australian genera (Pterogmus Sloane, Thayerella Baehr, and Neonomius Moore) do not form a natural group, but are cladistically interdigitated among two monophyletic New Zealand lineages (Tarastethus Sharp, and Trichopsida Larochelle and Larivière) suggesting substantial trans-Tasman diversification among these groups. Hypothesized relationships within Theprisa are consistent with two bouts of speciation involving the Bass Strait; an initial event establishing T. convexa as adelphotaxon to the other four species, and a more recent event establishing the sister species T. darlingtoni and T. montana. Geographic restriction of T. otway to the Otway Ranges is paralleled by Otway endemics in several other carabid beetle genera, as well as by endemics in numerous other terrestrial arthropod taxa. Whereas these numerous Otway endemics support the distinctive nature of the Otway Range fauna, their biogeographic relationships are extremely varied, illustrating that the Otways have accrued their distinctive biodiversity via various means.

We studied a paleoseismic trench excavated in 2017 across the Banning strand of the San Andreas fault and herein provide the first detailed record of ground-breaking earthquakes on this important fault in Southern California. The trench exposed an ~40-m-wide fault zone cutting through alluvial sand, gravel, silt, and clay deposits. We evaluated the paleoseismic record using a new metric that combines event indicator quality and stratigraphic uncertainty. The most recent paleoearthquake occurred between 950 and 730 calibrated years B.P. (cal yr B.P.), potentially contemporaneous with the last rupture of the San Gorgonio Pass fault zone. We interpret five surface-rupturing earthquakes since 3.3–2.5 ka and eight earthquakes since 7.1–5.7 ka. It is possible that additional events have occurred but were not recognized, especially in the deeper (older) section of the stratigraphy, which was not fully exposed across the fault zone. We calculated an average recurrence interval of 380–640 yr based on four complete earthquake cycles between earthquakes 1 and 5. The average recurrence interval is thus slightly less than the elapsed time since the most recent event on the Banning strand. The average recurrence interval on the Banning strand is thus intermediate between longer intervals published for the San Gorgonio Pass fault zone (~1600 yr) and shorter intervals on both the Mission Creek strand of the San Andreas fault (~215 yr) and the Coachella section (~125 yr) of the San Andreas fault.
