Effective explosives detection requires dogs to generalize their response to untrained variations of targets that are related to those with which they were trained. Previous research suggests that dogs tend to be highly specific to their trained odors, and are sensitive to alterations in odor profiles. Triacetone triperoxide (TATP) is an increasingly popular homemade explosive due to the widespread accessibility of starting materials. The large variety of reagent sources and production approaches yields high variability in deployed formulations. Whether dogs trained with pure forms of TATP generalize to other variations is unknown, representing a potentially significant security gap. In the current study, we tested dogs (n = 11) previously trained to detect pure TATP with four variants: diacetone diperoxide (DADP), a homologue often created as a TATP byproduct, and three different clandestine TATP formulations designed to emulate those used by terrorists or insurgents. On average, dogs detected each untrained variant at rates equivalent to the trained TATP (ps > 0.07), with individual variability in first-trial alerts for some of the variants. Chemical analyses paralleled the canine results, showing distinct similarities and differences. For the TATP samples, the laboratory-grade was the purest sample tested and did not contain DADP or the TATP homologue that the three clandestine versions showed in their respective headspace profiles. The headspace results showed that each sample could be clearly identified as TATP, yet they showed recognizable differences due to their individual syntheses. These findings suggest that training on pure TATP may be effective for generalization to untrained variants. Further research is necessary to identify factors that influence individual variation in generalization between dogs, as well as other explosives.

Diacetone diperoxide (DADP) and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) are very sensitive organic-peroxide type explosives which are easily synthesized. The present density functional treatment considers oxidative powers of DADP and TATP molecules based on comparison of their interactions with certain group II-metals at the level of B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p). Composite systems of DADP and TATP with Be, Mg and Ca have been considered. Although, in the case of beryllium composites, DADP and TATP and in the magnesium composite of DADP the organic component remains intact, Ca composites of DADP and TATP undergo ring rapture. Certain structural, electronic, quantum chemical and some spectral properties of the composites have been obtained and discussed.

We built three successive versions of a thermal decomposition cavity ring-down spectrometer and tested their response to explosives. These explosive compound analyzers successfully detected nitroglycerine, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), pentaerythryl tetranitrate, hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine and triacetone triperoxide (TATP). We determined the pathlength and limits of detection for each, with the best limit of detection being 13 parts per trillion (ppt) of TNT. For most of the explosive tests, the peak height was higher than the expected value, meaning that peroxy radical chain propagation was occurring with each of the explosives and not just the peroxide TATP.

AbstractThe identification of energetic materials in containments is an important challenge for analytical methods in the field of safety and security. Opening a package without knowledge of its contents and the resulting hazards is highly involved with risks and should be avoided whenever possible. Therefore, preferable methods work non-destructive with minimal interaction and are capable of identifying target substances in a containment quickly and reliably. Most spectroscopic methods find their limits, if the target substance is shielded by a covering material. To solve this problem, a combined laser drilling method with subsequent identification of the target substance by means of Raman spectroscopic measurements through microscopic bore holes of the covering material is presented. A pulsed laser beam is used for both the drilling process and as an excitation source for Raman measurements in the same optical setup. Results show the ability of this new method to gain high-quality spectra even when performed through microscopic small bore channels. With the laser parameters chosen right, the method can even be performed on highly sensitive explosives like triacetone triperoxide (TATP). Another advantageous effect arises in an observed reduction in unwanted fluorescence signal in the spectral data, resulting from the confocal-like measurement setup with the bore hole acting as aperture.

Micro-traces analysis of triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in the form of vapours using TD-GC/MS The article discusses the method of detecting triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in the form of vapours and surface traces using gas chromatography with a thermal desorption system of mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS). The technical solutions of analytical equipment make it possible to choose one or two methods for introducing analyte vapour for identification – indirectly from the TENAX TA deposit or directly from the research objects. In addition, the use of the GERSTEL CIS element as a substance concentrator renders identification of even nano-trace amounts of TATP possible. The article presents the experimental procedure of the thermal desorption TD-GC/MS and simultaneously draws attention to physical properties of the substance determining the achievement of satisfactory results.
