Purpose. To study the dynamics of interhemispheric interactions in children with friendly strabismus as a result of functional treatment. Material and methods. The study included 135 children aged 6 to 8 (average 6.8±0.1) years with convergent non-paralytic operated strabismus in combination with hypermetropic refraction and 96 children of the same age in the control group (average 7.1±0.1 years) without ophthalmic pathology. In children with strabismus, the leading hand and dominant eye were determined before and after functional treatment. Characteristics of spatial perception were evaluated by copying of complex geometric shapes which were Taylor's (right-handed) and Ray-Osterritz's (lefthanded). Results. After functional treatment in the group of children with non-paralytic strabismus, along with improved binocular functions and improved performance of the Taylor and Ray-Osterritz tests, there was an increase in the number of ambidextrous children and a significant decrease in the number of left-handers (p<0.001). Conclusion. The increase in the number of symmetrical lateral phenotypes against the background of improved binocular functions and spatial perception characteristics as a result of functional treatment of children with non-paralytic strabismus indicates an improvement of their interhemispheric interactions and can be an additional criterion for the ef fectiveness of treatment. Key words: lateral phenotypes, interhemispheric asymmetry, functional treatment of strabismus

Diacetone diperoxide (DADP) and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) are very sensitive organic-peroxide type explosives which are easily synthesized. The present density functional treatment considers oxidative powers of DADP and TATP molecules based on comparison of their interactions with certain group II-metals at the level of B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p). Composite systems of DADP and TATP with Be, Mg and Ca have been considered. Although, in the case of beryllium composites, DADP and TATP and in the magnesium composite of DADP the organic component remains intact, Ca composites of DADP and TATP undergo ring rapture. Certain structural, electronic, quantum chemical and some spectral properties of the composites have been obtained and discussed.

Triacetonetriperoxide (TATP) is a very sensitive organic peroxide type explosive which attracts the attention of terrorist groups due to its easy synthesis. The present density functional treatment considers the interaction of TATP molecule with certain group II metals at the level of B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p). Composite systems of TATP and Be, 2Be, Mg and Ca have been considered. Although, in the case of beryllium composites TATP molecule remains intact, in its Mg and Ca composites the rupture of the ring (even in 1:1 composite) occurs. Certain structural, electronic, quantum chemical and some spectral properties of the composites have been obtained and discussed.

Objectives. Orthodontic treatment intends to create a harmony between dental, muscular and osseous components. The purpose of this case presentation was to emphasize consequences of early loss of temporary teeth on dental-maxillary complex development. Material and methods. 10 years old patient with dental movements following the early extraction of temporary teeth. The patient has habitual oral breathing associated with lower lip interposition. Results. The functional treatment with twin-block appliance was chosen, taking into account the age-specific growth potential. Discussions. Premature extraction of temporary teeth engenders lee-way-space loss, significant shortening and transverse constriction of the dental arch, elements aggravated by dysfunctions and parafunctions. Conclusion. The early extractions performed during the growth period, through the associated dental migrations, determine growth changes with consequences on the functionality of the dento-maxillary apparatus.

Abstract Background Children with Robin sequence (RS) are at risk of growth failure, mainly due to their increased work of breathing and feeding difficulties. Various conservative and surgical treatment approaches exist, but their impact on weight gain has not yet been adequately addressed. A functional treatment concept, used in our center for > 20 years, includes a pre-epiglottic baton plate (Tuebingen palatal plate) and intensive feeding training. Objective To investigate the effect of the Tuebingen treatment protocol on growth and weight trajectories during infancy. Methods This retrospective study analyzed longitudinal data from infants with isolated RS admitted to Tuebingen University Children’s Hospital, Germany between 1998 and 2019. Through our electronic patient database, we evaluated anthropometric parameters until reaching 1-year follow-up. Results are shown as median (IQR). Results In 307 infants analyzed, median Z-score for weight decreased from − 0.28 at birth to − 1.12 upon admission to our center at a median age of 22 days. Z-score then remained largely unchanged until discharge (Z-score difference, − 0.08), while the proportion of infants receiving tube feedings decreased from 55.1 to 13.7%. Z-score subsequently increased from − 1.17 at discharge to − 0.44 at the 1-year follow-up (p < 0.001). Conclusion Based on a comparatively large cohort, this functional treatment was associated with better weight gain and improved feeding. As RS infants often show postnatal growth failure, weight monitoring may be a valuable parameter for monitoring treatment effectiveness. Clinical Trial Registration Not necessary due to the retrospective design.

Purpose. Description of various clinical forms of amblyopia and the effectiveness of their treatment in children. Material and methods. 242 children from 3 to 18 years old were examined: 110 boys (45.5%) and 132 girls (54.5%). The scope of visual examinations included the following: visometry (Tomey TCP-1000 LED), autorefractometry (Tomey TR-4000), keratometry (Pentacam), determination of the nature of visual fixation (HEINEBETA 200S manual ophthalmoscope). Results and conclusion. The approaches to treatment, depending on the underlying pathology, can be functional, surgical and combined. Functional treatment is indicated for amblyopia associated with concomitant strabismus (especially monolateral) and ametropia without improvement in correction. Surgery is very effective in relieving obscuration amblyopia (cataract extraction with IOL implantation, keratoconus with crosslinking). Key words: amblyopia, ametropia, pleoptics, orthoptics, obscuration.
