The article presents the determination of the topographic spatial resolution of an optical point sensor. It is quantified by the lateral period limit DLIM measured on a type ASG material measure, also called (topographic) Siemens star, with a confocal sensor following both a radial measurement and evaluation, as proposed by ISO 25178-70, and the measurement and subsequent evaluation of two line scans, proposed by the NPL Good Practice Guide. As will be shown, for the latter, an only slightly misidentified target centre of the Siemens star leads to quite significant errors of the determined DLIM. Remarkably, a misidentified target centre does not necessarily result in an overestimation of DLIM, but lower values might also be obtained. Therefore, a modified Good Practice Guide is proposed to determine DLIM more accurately, as it includes a thorough determination of the centre of the Siemens star as well. While the measurement and evaluation effort is increased slightly compared to the NPL Good Practice Guide, it is still much faster than a complete radial measurement and evaluation.

Abstract This review offers an update on arsenic-bearing minerals and pigments with the aim of serving as a guide for the study of Cultural Heritage materials in which these materials can be found.The different As-bearing mineral phases (realgar, pararealgar, orpiment, anorpiment, alacranite, dimorphite, bonazziite, uzonite, wakabayashilite, duranusite, arsenolite and claudetite) and some of their light-induced products are examined. The occurrence of As-sulfides and their trade, use, alteration and degradation are also reviewed. Finally, the analytical techniques commonly used for the identification of arsenic-containing pigments are discussed. The manuscript concludes with a good-practice guide and a summary of key concepts for use by those working in the field of cultural heritage.

Building information modelling (BIM) has considerable potential for addressing sustainability issues in construction, but its benefits can be constrained by the failure to adopt BIM across the full project life cycle. Systematic whole-of-life BIM adoption can be supported by maturity models, but most models are limited by a lack of theoretical grounding, socio-technical dichotomies and the failure to adequately consider the full asset life cycle, often by overlooking the operations phase. This study aims to (1) develop a BIM maturity model that addresses these limitations by (2) using an in-depth analysis of an early adopter case study, thus addressing the lack of empirical research in BIM adoption experiences. A single interpretive research study was conducted to qualitatively analyse a US-based university. The data were gathered through interviews, field visits and document analysis. Actor–network theory (ANT) concepts scaffolded the analytical approach. The findings show that a complex BIM socio-technical network emerged, developed and converged during the project management stage but struggled to achieve durability as an ongoing solution to facilities management. By analysing the elements of success and failure across each stage, the researchers distilled five key lessons to achieve whole-of-life BIM maturity and proposed a life cycle BIM maturity model (LCBMM) supported by a practice guide.

Ecuador assumed the commitment of including Palliative Care (PC) in its health policies. In 2014, the Ministry of Public Health (Ministerio de Salud Pública, MSP) approved the Clinical Practice Guide for Palliative Care (Guía de Práctica Clínica sobre Cuidados Paliativos, GPCCP), with application at the national level, as a mandatory internal regulation in all institutions belonging to the National Health System. In 2021, there is no evidence about the degree of implementation. The objective was to evaluate the implementation (I) of the GPCCP guide and the knowledge (C) of the health personnel working in the Zone 7 Health Centers (HCs). This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and prospective study. A total of 292 professionals were interviewed: managers (38), physicians (150), and nurses (104). Three surveys based on the GPCCP guide were elaborated: one for the implementation, which was applied to the individuals in charge, and the others to assess the health professionals’ knowledge. The SPSS program was used, version 25. In the three groups, more than half of the participants had no training in PC, 91.2% of the HCs have the GPCCP guide, there is PC medical history (MH) in 38.2%, and morphine is used in 14.7%. The implementation of the GPCCP guide was inadequate in 52.9% of the cases. Only 25% treat the agony symptoms and 30%, delirium; 4.4% acknowledge the use of morphine in dyspnea, and 13.3% identify the subcutaneous route as the first choice for hydration at the end-of-life phase. Strategies to implement the GPCCP guide and to improve the health personnel’s knowledge must be implemented in Zone 7 centers.

Study Design: This study aimed to introduce 3D printing in a municipal hospital to improve the treatment of craniomaxillofacial patients and optimize costs and operating time. Thus we describe the implementation of low-cost in-house 3D printing to facilitate orbital- and mandible reconstruction in CMF surgery. Moreover, we address legal requirements, safety at work, fire- and data protection. Finally, we want to share our experiences using 3D printing and point out its advantages in providing better patient care. Methods: We outline the setup of in-house 3D printing and focus on obeying German health care regulations. We based our approach on a fused deposition modeling 3D printer and free software. As proof of concept, we treated 4 cases of severe orbital trauma and 1 case of mandibular reconstruction. We printed a 3D patient-specific model for each case and adapted a titanium mesh implant, respectively, a titanium reconstruction plate before performing the surgery. Results: Our approach reduced costs, duration of anesthesia, operating time, recovery time, and postoperative swelling and increased the revenue. Functional outcome in orbital reconstruction like eye movement and double vision, was improved compared to the conventional technique. No severe complications like loss-of-vision or surgical revision occurred. Likewise, mandibular reconstruction showed no plate loosening or plate fracture. Conclusion: The implementation of cost-efficient 3D printing resulted in successful patient treatment with excellent outcomes. Our practice guide offers a 3D printing workflow and could be adapted to fit the needs of other specialties like neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery as well.
