The research shows that subjective feelings of people, such as emotions and fatigue, can be objectively reflected by electroencephalography (EEG) physiological signals Thus, an evaluation method based on EEG, which is used to explore auditory brain cognition laws, is introduced in this study. The brain cognition laws are summarized by analyzing the EEG power topographic map under the stimulation of three kinds of automobile sound, namely, quality of comfort, powerfulness, and acceleration. Then, the EEG features of the subjects are classified through a machine learning algorithm, by which the recognition of diversified automobile sound is realized. In addition, the Kalman smoothing and minimal redundancy maximal relevance (mRMR) algorithm is used to improve the recognition accuracy. The results show that there are differences in the neural characteristics of diversified automobile sound quality, with a positive correlation between EEG energy and sound intensity. Furthermore, by using the Kalman smoothing and mRMR algorithm, recognition accuracy is improved, and the amount of calculation is reduced. The novel idea and method to explore the cognitive laws of automobile sound quality from the field of brain-computer interface technology are provided in this study.

Abstract. Bayesian state estimation in the form of Kalman smoothing was applied to differential mobility analyser train (DMA-train) measurements of aerosol size distribution dynamics. Four experiments were analysed in order to estimate the aerosol size distribution, formation rate, and size-dependent growth rate, as functions of time. The first analysed case was a synthetic one, generated by a detailed aerosol dynamics model and the other three chamber experiments performed at the CERN CLOUD facility. The estimated formation and growth rates were compared with other methods used earlier for the CLOUD data and with the true values for the computer-generated synthetic experiment. The agreement in the growth rates was very good for all studied cases: estimations with an earlier method fell within the uncertainty limits of the Kalman smoother results. The formation rates also matched well, within roughly a factor of 2.5 in all cases, which can be considered very good considering the fact that they were estimated from data given by two different instruments, the other being the particle size magnifier (PSM), which is known to have large uncertainties close to its detection limit. The presented fixed interval Kalman smoother (FIKS) method has clear advantages compared with earlier methods that have been applied to this kind of data. First, FIKS can reconstruct the size distribution between possible size gaps in the measurement in such a way that it is consistent with aerosol size distribution dynamics theory, and second, the method gives rise to direct and reliable estimation of size distribution and process rate uncertainties if the uncertainties in the kernel functions and numerical models are known.

The ability to accurately and non-invasively measure 3D mass centre positions and their derivatives can provide rich insight into the physical demands of sports training and competition. This study examines a method for non-invasively measuring mass centre velocities using markerless human pose estimation and Kalman smoothing. Marker (Qualysis) and markerless (OpenPose) motion capture data were captured synchronously for sprinting and skeleton push starts. Mass centre positions and velocities derived from raw markerless pose estimation data contained large errors for both sprinting and skeleton pushing (mean ± SD = 0.127 ± 0.943 and −0.197 ± 1.549 m·s−1, respectively). Signal processing methods such as Kalman smoothing substantially reduced the mean error (±SD) in horizontal mass centre velocities (0.041 ± 0.257 m·s−1) during sprinting but the precision remained poor. Applying pose estimation to activities which exhibit unusual body poses (e.g., skeleton pushing) appears to elicit more erroneous results due to poor performance of the pose estimation algorithm. Researchers and practitioners should apply these methods with caution to activities beyond sprinting as pose estimation algorithms may not generalise well to the activity of interest. Retraining the model using activity specific data to produce more specialised networks is therefore recommended.

Abstract Background Blood glucose (BG) management is crucial for type-1 diabetes patients resulting in the necessity of reliable artificial pancreas or insulin infusion systems. In recent years, deep learning techniques have been utilized for a more accurate BG level prediction system. However, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) readings are susceptible to sensor errors. As a result, inaccurate CGM readings would affect BG prediction and make it unreliable, even if the most optimal machine learning model is used. Methods In this work, we propose a novel approach to predicting blood glucose level with a stacked Long short-term memory (LSTM) based deep recurrent neural network (RNN) model considering sensor fault. We use the Kalman smoothing technique for the correction of the inaccurate CGM readings due to sensor error. Results For the OhioT1DM (2018) dataset, containing eight weeks’ data from six different patients, we achieve an average RMSE of 6.45 and 17.24 mg/dl for 30 min and 60 min of prediction horizon (PH), respectively. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the leading average prediction accuracy for the ohioT1DM dataset. Different physiological information, e.g., Kalman smoothed CGM data, carbohydrates from the meal, bolus insulin, and cumulative step counts in a fixed time interval, are crafted to represent meaningful features used as input to the model. The goal of our approach is to lower the difference between the predicted CGM values and the fingerstick blood glucose readings—the ground truth. Our results indicate that the proposed approach is feasible for more reliable BG forecasting that might improve the performance of the artificial pancreas and insulin infusion system for T1D diabetes management.

The low-distortion processing of well-testing geological parameters is a key way to provide decision-making support for oil and gas field development. However, the classical processing methods face many problems, such as the stochastic nature of the data, the randomness of initial parameters, poor denoising ability, and the lack of data compression and prediction mechanisms. These problems result in poor real-time predictability of oil operation status and difficulty in offline interpreting the played back data. Given these, we propose a wavelet-based Kalman smoothing method for processing uncertain oil well-testing data. First, we use correlation and reconstruction errors as analysis indicators and determine the optimal combination of decomposition scale and vanishing moments suitable for wavelet analysis of oil data. Second, we build a ground pressure measuring platform and use the pressure gauge equipped with the optimal combination parameters to complete the downhole online wavelet decomposition, filtering, Kalman prediction, and data storage. After the storage data are played back, the optimal Kalman parameters obtained by particle swarm optimization are used to complete the data smoothing for each sample. The experiments compare the signal-to-noise ratio and the root mean square error before and after using different classical processing models. In addition, robustness analysis is added. The proposed method, on the one hand, has the features of decorrelation and compressing data, which provide technical support for real-time uploading of downhole data; on the other hand, it can perform minimal variance unbiased estimates of the data, filter out the interference and noise, reduce the reconstruction error, and make the data have a high resolution and strong robustness.

One of the most important ocean water parameters in world ocean observations is temperature. In the application of high-precision ocean sensors, there are often various interferences and random noises. These noises will cause the linearity of the sensor to change, and it is difficult to estimate the statistical characteristics, and the results will deviate from the real temperature. Aiming at the problems in the application, this paper proposes a compound Kalman smoothing filter (CKSF) algorithm based on least square curve fitting. This algorithm first analyzes the system model of the sensor, uses the least square method to fit the theoretical data and eliminate the non-linear factors caused by system itself, then estimates the statistical characteristics of the noise required by modeling, using the wavelet transform method to track the change of noise in real time and to accurately estimate the noise variance. Finally, a compound filtering method including wavelet transform and Kalman smoothing filtering is used as the main denoising algorithm, which is more accurate than a single Kalman filtering result. The algorithm is applied to the temperature measurement process of the ocean temperature sensor. The results show that the accuracy and stability of the sensor are improved.
