By the method of density functional theory (B3LYP, 6-31G **) three types of displacements are calculated, namely oscillations as a whole, rotation and diffusion of dimers > Ge = Ge <, > Ge = Si < and > Si = Si <, which are formed on the crystalline surface of Si (001) (4×2) during the deposition of germanium atoms under conditions of molecular beam epitaxy. Calculations of angles of buckling of addimers are carried out. It is shown that when the addimers as a whole oscillate around the equilibrium position, the energy barriers are quite low, the highest of them occurs for a mixed addimer > Si = Ge <. Pure adders > Ge = Ge < and > Si = Si < oscillate between two degenerate states with an energy barrier of 0.042 and 0.014 eV, respectively. The structures of the transition state and the intermediate when the addimer > Ge = Ge < is moved between adjacent cells in the approximation of the constant bond length > Ge = Ge < are obtained. As calculations have shown, all transformations of surface dimers occur with relatively small activation energies, the numerical values of which agree satisfactorily with the results of STM experiments available in the literature.

Magnetic skyrmion in chiral magnet exhibits a variety of unique topological properties associated with its innate topological structure. This inspires a number of ongoing searching for new topological magnetic textures. In this work, we used micromagnetic simulations and Monte Carlo simulations to investigate an exotic Néel-type magnetic kinks in square-shaped nanostructures of chiral magnets, which performs rather stably in the absence of magnetic field. The individual magnetic kink can reside in one of the four possible corners, and carry possibly upward or downward core polarity, constituting eight degenerate states. In addition, these kinks also exhibit unique behaviors of generation, stability and dynamics, as revealed by micromagnetic simulations. It was found that such kinks can be created, annihilated, displaced, and polarity-reversed on demand by applying a spin-polarized current pulse, and are easily switchable among the eight degenerate states. In particularly, the kinks can be switched toward the ferromagnetic-like states and backward reversibly by applying two successive current pulses, indicating the capability of writing and deleting the kink structures. These findings predict the existence of Néel-type magnetic kinks in the square-shaped nanostructures, as well as provide us a promising approach to tailor the kinks by utilizing the corners of the nanostructures, and control these states by spin-polarized currents. The present work also suggests a theoretical guide to explore other chiral magnetic textures in nanostructures of polygon geometries.

Laser-induced-continuum-structure (LICS) allows for coherent control techniques to be applied in a Raman type system with an intermediate continuum state. The standard LICS problem involves two bound states coupled to one or more continua. In this paper, we discuss the simplest non-trivial multistate generalization of LICS which couples two bound levels, each composed of two degenerate states through a common continuum state. We reduce the complexity of the system by switching to a rotated basis of the bound states, in which different sub-systems of lower dimension evolve independently. We derive the trapping condition and explore the dynamics of the sub-systems under different initial conditions.
