AbstractNonlinear optical trans -4'-(dimethylamino)- N -methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate (DATS) nanocrystals are synthesized in polymethylmethacrylate by nucleation in a drying polymer film at different solvent concentrations. Nanocrystals with sizes progressively increasing from 70 to 2500 nm are obtained. The effect of size on the nonlinear optical coefficient is studied by generation of the second harmonic of a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser. It is shown that the nonlinear optical coefficient decreases with decreasing crystal size by no more than a factor of 1.5. The optical absorption spectra and the shape of nanocrystals are studied as functions of their size.

A series of optical polymeres were prepared by a Mitsunobu reaction from the correspondingN,N-dihydroxyethyl D-π-A chromophores and bisphenol A, which is new main-chain copolymeres with good solubility in ordinary organic solvents. The linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were investigated by UV spectra and NLO measurements. The results indicate that the films of copolymeres exhibit a higher macroscopic second nonlinear optical coefficient, thermal stability and good optical transparency.

An novel nonlinear optical alkynyl substituted azobenzene 4-(propargyl methyl ester)-4'-[(N,N'-diethyl) amino] azobenzene was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1HNMR. The linear optical properties were investigated by UV-Vis spectra. The nonlinear optical properties and optical limiting properties were investigated using 21 ps pulse at 532nm and 4ns pulse at 532nm, respectively. The results show that this novel nonlinear optical alkynyl substituted azobenzene possesses large third nonlinear optical coefficient and good optical limiting properties.

The second-order nonlinear optical effect in asymmetric quantum wells is investigated. By using compact density-matrix approach, the analytical expression of the second-order nonlinear optical coefficient is obtained. The results show that the second-order nonlinear optical coefficient increases with the increasing of the asymmetry of quantum well. In addition, the nonlinear optical coefficient which obtained in this asymmetric quantum well is very larger than that obtained in bulk GaAs.

For RbTiOPO4 (RTP) crystal, the second harmonic generation (SHG) properties of 1064nm are discussed, including phase matching (PM) direction, effective nonlinear optical coefficient (deff), walk-off angle, and angular acceptance. For the frequency doubling of nano-second and pico-second Nd:YAG laser, the conversion efficiency of RTP crystal can reach 51 % and 57 %, respectively. The laser damage threshold of RTP crystal is measured.
