Abstract In this article, we investigate a puzzle for standard accounts of reference in natural language processing, psycholinguistics and pragmatics: occasions where, following an initial reference (e.g., the ice), a subsequent reference is achieved using the same noun phrase (i.e., the ice), as opposed to an anaphoric form (i.e., it). We argue that such non-anaphoric reference can be understood as motivated by a central principle: the expression of agency in interaction. In developing this claim, we draw upon research in what may initially appear a wholly unconnected domain: the marking of epistemic and deontic stance, standardly investigated in linguistics as turn-level grammatical phenomena. Examination of naturally-occurring talk reveals that to analyze such stances solely though the lens of turn-level resources (e.g., modals) is to address only partially the means by which participants make epistemic and deontic claims in everyday discourse. Speakers’ use of referential expressions illustrates a normative dimension of grammar that incorporates both form and position, thereby affording speakers the ability to actively depart from this form-position norm through the use of a repeated NP, a grammatical practice that we show is associated with the expression of epistemic and deontic authority. It is argued that interactants can thus be seen to be agentively mobilizing the resources of grammar to accommodate the inescapable temporality of interaction.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the proposal for the identification of an objective criteria for setting judicial compensation; to trace a historical evolution of the company concept, relating the distinction between the role of the former liquidator and the figure of the judicial administrator; to research the parameters of Brazilian law accompanied by the subsequent reference to foreign law; and to analyze Brazilian cases and the inconsistency of the values set as compensation. Methodology:The chosen methodology followed an inductive approach by way of a historical, monographic and comparative procedure searching to analyze the legislation adopted by Colombia, Italy, France and the United States of America to reflect on the need to adopt parameters more specific regarding the fair and adequate setting of the compensation of the judicial administrator in the judicial recovery. Results: Considering the data survey on the issues suggested in this paper, the setting of the administrator's compensation must follow objective criteria in order to make the company's social function and uplift without the unjust enrichment of the Justice assistant. Contributions: The main contribution of this study lies in pointing out solutions that directly reflect the maintenance of workers' jobs and protect the interests of creditors in order to preserve the company and its social function, in addition to promoting the stimulus to economic activity. Keywords: Judicial reorganization; bankruptcy; administrator; compensation; reasonability.

Cluster headache (CH) is the trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia whose pain is considered to be one of the most severe known to man. Although diagnosed less frequently than migraine and tension-type headaches, CH is nonetheless an important clinical entity, particularly given our evolving understanding of its actual epidemiology, pathophysiology, current diagnostic criteria and treatment approaches. We carried out a systematic review through the United States National Library of Medicine (PUBMED) by using the search term "cluster headache" and the results were narrowed to manuscripts published in the last ten years with subsequent reference searches and verification of source data. This article presents a review of the current understanding of the most important aspects of CH, with emphasis on mechanisms and treatment approaches.

Anaphora can be generally defined as “subsequent reference to an entity already introduced in discourse” (Safir 2004a; see Representing Anaphoric Dependencies). The study of anaphora spans various fields of linguistics, from formal syntax and semantics to linguistic typology and pragmatics, and from computational linguistics to language processing and language acquisition. A major divide in this field is that between intrasentential anaphora—more specifically, binding relations—and intersentential, or discourse, anaphora. The former attracted attention in the 1960s and is one of the central topics in generative syntax and semantics, but also in current typological studies. The latter has been studied extensively since the early 1990s within computational linguistics, discourse representation theory, and functional approaches such as centering theory.

The considerable literature that has already gathered round the Palestinian inscription on violation of sepulture published by M. Cumont in 1930 leaves little new to be said. There is, however, a gap to be filled for the English reader; moreover discussion has now cleared away certain initial misconceptions, so that a restatement may be useful. I have tried to acknowledge all substantial obligations, but beg to be excused the tedium of meticulous citation. Here, once for all, are the previous publications known to me; subsequent reference will generally be by author's name only.

During a visit to Naples in June, 1913, I was permitted by the courtesy of Professor Spinazzola, the distinguished Director of the National Museum, to examine a number of decorated bowls of Samian ware obviously of south Gallic style, preserved in the ‘magazzini’ of the museum. Professor Spinazzola most kindly afforded me every facility for their study, and consented to their publication. Seventy-six of these bowls bore, in addition to the inventory-number, the date 1882, and a subsequent reference to three passages in the Notizie degli Scavi made it possible to identify ninety bowls in all as belonging to a group found together at Pompeii. The circumstances of the discovery were as follows: the ninety bowls were found on 4th October, 1881, in the ‘tablinum’ of house 9, insula 5, region viii (ii). They were arranged in order in a wooden box, of which some charred fragments remained, together with thirty-seven earthenware lamps said to have shewn no sign of use. Of these lamps twenty-four bear the stamp STROBILI; six, COMVNIS; four, ECHIO; two, FORTIS; and one is uninscribed. Side by side with this box were found two others, containing red powder, either pounded brick or red earth, the use of which I do not know.

The following paper gives an account of a series of breeding experiments which were made with the butterfly Papilio polytes , Linn., in the course of one and a half years’ research on insect polymorphism in Ceylon. In the first instance the experiments on butterflies were not limited to this species, but unfortunately all others proved refractory in captivity and were one by one discarded. More time therefore could be given to this, the only amenable species, and it was possible to make a number of observations on the habits of the imago which are suggestive in several ways, and justify a more extensive reference than is usual in papers on heredity. The first chapter of this paper, therefore, is devoted to observations on the species in captivity, especially to the pairing habits of the imagines. The second chapter deals with the results obtained from the pedigree breeding and their Mendelian interpretation, and a final chapter may be added to allow of a comparison with similar work on other species and of a summary of the conclusions to be derived from the investigation as a whole. P. polytes , as a classical example of mimicry, is too well known to need a full description here. As a subject for a detailed investigation it has peculiar advantages. It is trimorphic; this trimorphism is confined to the female sex; of the three forms of female, one resembles the male in general pattern, while the other two are mimetic, their models being P. hector , Linn., and P. aristolochiæ , Fabr. It would naturally be supposed that the female like the male would be known as the polytes ♀, but this is not the case, as one of the mimetic forms was first described under this name. To avoid confusion and to facilitate subsequent reference, the various forms of the species may be stated thus:— P. polytes ♀ form cyrus , Fabr., resembles the male. P. polytes ♀ form romulus , Cram., resembles P. hector , Linn. P. polytes ♀ form polytes , Linn., resembles P. aristolocliæ , Fabr.
