Abstract A warm forming process is designed for AA5754 to overcome low room temperature formability. The solution includes increased working temperature and is demonstrated with a railway vehicle component. A Finite Element (FE) based methodology was adopted to design the process taking into account also the starting condition of the alloy. In fact, the component's dent resistance can be enhanced if the yield point is increased accordingly: the stamping process was thus designed considering the blank in both the H111 (annealed and slightly hardened) and H32 (strain-hardened and stabilized) conditions that were preliminarily characterized. Tensile and formability tests were carried out at different temperature and strain rate levels, thus providing the data to be implemented within the FE model (Abaqus/CAE): the stamping was at first simulated at room temperature to evaluate the blank critical regions. Subsequently, the warm forming process was designed by means of an uncoupled thermo-mechanical approach. Thermal simulations were run to properly design the heating strategy and achieve an optimal temperature distribution over the blank deformation zone (according to the results of the material characterization). Such a distribution was then imported as a boundary condition into the mechanical step (Abaqus/Explicit) to determine the optimal process parameters and obtain a sound component (strain severity was monitored implementing an FLD-based damage criterion). The simulation model was validated experimentally with stamping trials to fabricate a sound component using the optimized heating strategy and punch stroke profile.

Although generally speaking, a great number of functional evaluations may be required until convergence, it can be solved by using neural network effectively. Here, techniques to search the region of interest containing the global optimal design selected by random seeds is investigated. Also techniques for finding more accurate approximation using Holographic Neural Network (HNN) improved by using penalty function for generalized inverse matrix is investigated. Furthermore, the mapping method of extrapolation is proposed to make the technique available to general application in structural optimization. Application examples show that HNN may be expected as potential activate and feasible surface functions in response surface methodology than the polynomials in function approximations. Finally, the real design examples of a vehicle performance such as idling vibration, booming noise, vehicle component crash worthiness and combination problem between vehicle crashworthiness and restraint device performance at the head-on collision are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract Vehicle component design is crucial for developing a vehicle prototype, as optimum parts can lead to cost reduction and performance enhancement of the vehicle system. The use of metaheuristics for vehicle component optimization has been commonplace due to several advantages: robustness and simplicity. This paper aims to demonstrate the shape design of a vehicle bracket by using a newly invented metaheuristic. The new optimizer is termed the ecogeography-based optimization algorithm (EBO). This is arguably the first vehicle design application of the new optimizer. The optimization problem is posed while EBO is implemented to solve the problem. It is found that the design results obtained from EBO are better when compared to other optimizers such as the equilibrium optimization algorithm, marine predators algorithm, slime mold algorithm.

In many instances, one or more components of a pharmaceutical or cosmetic formulation is an oil. The aims of this study were two-fold. First, to examine the potential of preferential uptake of one oily vehicle component over another into a model barrier membrane (silicone) from blended vehicles (comprising two from the common excipients isohexadecane (IHD), hexadecane (HD), isopropyl myristate (IPM), oleic acid (OA) and liquid paraffin). Second, to study the effect of membrane-vehicle interactions on the diffusion of model permeants (caffeine (CF), methyl paraben (MP) and butyl paraben (BP)) from blended vehicles. Selective sorption and partition of some oils (especially IHD and IPM) at the expense of other oils (such as OA) was demonstrated to take place. For example, the membrane composition of IHD was enriched compared to a donor solution of IHD-OA: 41%, 63% and 82% IHD, compared to donor solution composition of 25%, 50% and 75% IHD, respectively. Pre-soaking the membrane in IHD, HD or LP, rather than phosphate buffer, enhanced the flux of MP through the membrane by 2.6, 1.7 and 1.3 times, respectively. The preferential sorption of individual oil components from mixtures altered the barrier properties of silicone membrane, and enhanced the permeation of CF, MP and BP, which are typically co-formulated in topical products.

In the automotive industry, it is important to know whether the failure of some car parts may be related to the failure of others. This project studies warranty claims for five engine components obtained from a major car manufacturer with the purpose of modeling the joint distributions of the failure of two parts. The one-dimensional distributions of components are combined to construct a bivariate copula model for the joint distribution that makes it possible to estimate the probabilities of two components failing before a given time. Ultimately, the influence of the failure of one part on the operation of another related part can be described, predicted, and addressed. The performance of several families of one-parameter Archimedean copula models (Clayton, Gumbel–Hougaard, survival copulas) is analyzed, and Bayesian model selection is performed. Both right censoring and conditional approaches are considered with the emphasis on conditioning to the warranty period.
