Abstract Objectives Mud pack or compress is an easily accessible, cost-effective, efficient treatment modality used in naturopathy to manage and prevent various chronic illnesses. This study sought to elucidate the effectiveness of cold spinal mud packs on improving neuro-cardiac parameters among hypertensive individuals. Methods A total of 100 hypertensive subjects aged 30–50 years were randomly allocated into two groups: Cold spinal mud pack (CSMP) and prone rest. Blood Pressure (BP) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) were assessed at three-time points: Baseline, After 20 min (T1), After 60 min (T2). This single-blinded randomized controlled trial was registered in the Clinical Trials Registry-India (CTRI/2019/12/022492). Results After 20 min of CSMP showed a statistically significant reduction (p<0.01) in mean values of Systolic BP, Diastolic BP, and in HRV attained statistically significant change (p<0.01) in mean score in the frequency domain except for Very low-frequency power (VLF) and a significant difference found in the mean score of time-domain values (p<0.01) when compared to control group and 95% confidence interval (CI) will be provided for each effect. Conclusions CSMP reduces the sympathetic tone and shifts the sympathovagal balance in favor of parasympathetic dominance, contributing to a decrease in BP and effective changes in components of HRV.

Abstract Background Mud pack is one of the fundamental therapeutic procedures used in naturopathy to treat various diseases. There is a lack of scientific evidence for the use of mud-pack application in psychological variables. The present study aims at evaluating the effect of mud pack to eyes on psychological variables in healthy volunteers. Materials and methods Sixty healthy individuals with the age varied from 18 to 21 years were recruited and randomly divided into either mud-pack group (n=30) or wet-pack group (n=30). Mud-pack group received mud pack to eyes and wet-pack group received wet pack to eyes for a duration of 30 min/session (a total of 15 sessions). Psychological assessments like Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), Perservative Thinking Questionnaire (PTQ) and Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) were taken before and after the intervention. Statistical analysis was performed using statistical package for the social sciences, version 16. Results Result of this study showed a significant reduction in PTQ score and PANAS negative score in both mud-pack and wet-pack groups. But, a significant increase in MAAS score was observed only in the mud-pack group, unlike wet-pack group. However, there was no significant difference found in between group analysis. Conclusions Result suggests that though both mud pack and wet pack to eyes reduced the scores of PTQ and negative affects, only mud pack to eyes increased the state of mindfulness in healthy individuals.

Background. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common musculoskeletal disease in the world. OA is the result of an inflammatory and degenerative process affecting the entire joint. Osteoarthritis, especially involving the knee, has a relevant socioeconomic impact in terms of drugs, hospital admissions, work absences, and temporary or permanent invalidity. Therapy of knee osteoarthritis is based on pharmacological and nonpharmacological measures.Methods. We conducted a systematic review of the studies published between 2002 and 2017 on spa therapy, mud-pack therapy, balneotherapy, and mud-bath therapy in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in order to investigate the evidence of the efficacy of such treatment on pain, functional limitation, drug use, and quality of life. Overall, 35 studies were examined among which 12 were selected and included in the review if they are trial comparative. We have been able to illustrate the main results obtained in the individual studies and to elaborate these results in order to allow as much a unitary presentation as possible and hence an overall judgment.Results. Because the studies we reviewed differed markedly from one another in terms of the methods used, we were unable to conduct a quantitative analysis (meta-analysis) of pooled data from the 12 studies. For the purposes of the present review, we reevaluated the results of the different studies using the same statistical method, Student’st-test, which is used to compare the means of two frequency distributions. Among all the studies, the most relevant indexes used to measure effectiveness of spa therapy were improved including VAS, Lequesne, and WOMAC Score.Conclusions. The mud-pack therapy, balneotherapy, mud-bath therapy, and spa therapy have proved to be effective in the treatment and in the secondary prevention of knee osteoarthritis, by reducing pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug consumption, and functional limitation and improving quality of life of affected patients.
