The shallow benthos along the western Antarctic Peninsula supports brown macroalgal forests with dense amphipod assemblages, commonly including Gondogeneia antarctica (Amsler et al. 2014). Gondogeneia antarctica and most other amphipods are chemically deterred from consuming the macroalgae (Amsler et al. 2014). They primarily consume diatoms, other microalgae, filamentous macroalgae and a few undefended macroalgal species, including Palmaria decipiens (Aumack et al. 2017). Although unpalatable when alive, G. antarctica and other amphipods will consume the chemically defended brown algae Himantothallus grandifolius and Desmarestia anceps within a few weeks of death (Amsler et al. 2014).

Prasiola crispa is a macroscopic green algae found in abundance in Antarctica ice free areas. Prasiola crispan-hexaneextract (HPC) induced insecticidal activity in Nauphoeta cinerea cockroaches after 24 h of exposure. The chemical analysis of HPC revealed the presence of the followingphytosterols: β-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol. The incubation of cockroach semi-isolated heart preparations with HPC caused a significant negative chronotropic activity in the heartbeats. HPC affected the insect neuromuscular function by inducing a complete inhibition of the cockroach leg-muscle twitch tension. When the isolated phytosterols were injected at in vivo cockroach neuromuscular preparations, there was a progressive inhibition of muscle twitches on the following order of potency: β-sitosterol > campesterol > stigmasterol. HPC also provoked significant behavioral alterations, characterized by the increase or decrease of cockroach grooming activity, depending on the dose assayed. Altogether, the results presented here corroborate the insecticide potential of Prasiola crispa Antarctic algae. They also revealed the presence of phytosterols and the involvement of these steroidal compounds in the entomotoxic activity of the algae, potentially by modulating octopaminergic-cholinergic pathways. Further phytochemical-combined bioguided analysis of the HPC will unveil novel bioactive compounds that might be an accessory to the insecticide activity of the algae.

Recently, chlorophyll fluorescence imaging is frequently used non-invasive method to monitor the metabolic state and photosynthetic activities of vascular plants and other autotrophic organisms. In our study, we used the measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics to follow the development of culture of Antarctic algae (Macrochloris rubrioleum, Zygnema sp.) and cyanobacteria (Hassalia antarctica, Nostoc commune). On the cultures grown on agar plates, Bold´s Basal Medium (BBM), slow Kautsky kinetics supplemented with saturation pulses were measured repeatedly in a week interval. On the kinetics, typical points (OPSMT) were distinguished and species-specific and time of cultivation-dependent differences in shape of the OPSMT kinetics evaluated. We tested sensitivity of various chlorophyll fluorescence parameters to cultivation time on agar plates. In the algae, the most pronounced changes were the decrease in maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (FV/FM) and quenching of basal chlorophyll fluorescence qF0 (M. rubrioleum, Zygnema sp.). In cyanobacteria, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters did not show clear trends with the time of cultivation. F0 quenching (qF0) reached positive values in H. antarctica, while it was negative in N. commune. In both cases, however, qF0 showed an increase with cultivation time. The differences are discussed as well as the potential of the emerging area of the application of chlorophyll fluorescence imaging for evaluation of photosynthetic performance of algal/cyanobacterial cultures on agar plates.

DSSC assembled with purified R-phycoerythrin show acceptable efficiency conversion values, especially when extracted from Palmaria decipiens. They showed up to 0.12 % conversion efficiency values. Adsorption of the protein onto the electrode surface plays a relevant role in DSSC performance impacting on the performance. The use of dyes easily obtained in a place as Antarctica is an alternative to explore to solve the energy issue.

Determination of biomass production and viability of algal cells of Chlorella vulgaris and Synechocystis salina exposed to UV-B radiation were carried out in this study together with comparison of the mesophilic and antarctic isolates of both investigated strains. Estimation of the content of the pigments: chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, β-carotene, C-phycocyanin and allo-phycocyanin in algal cells exposed to UV-B radiation was also accomplished. The obtained results showed that the antarctic algae are more resistant to oxidative stress than their mesophilic counterparts. The antarctic isolates of Ch. vulgaris and S. salina compared with the mesophilic ones - up to 72 h showed tolerance to low exposures of radiation, expressed in a slight stimulation of growth and viability of the cells. Antarctic isolates also showed greater resistance to low doses of UV-B radiation manifested by stimulation of the synthesis of chlorophyll a and β-carotene. The registered increase in the amount of C- and allo-phycocyanin in antarctic isolates of S. salina showed that they had developed protective strategies against UV-B radiation by increasing the concentration of the phycobiliproteins. As a result of increased UV-B background, in antarctic isolates, stronger antioxidant defence mechanisms are triggered, which proved the possibility of using them as markers of oxidative stress.
